Controversial topic but read along. You don't have to agree to what i say but we can debate merits and demerits in the spirit of this forum.

Current issues in our own nation and globally
1. Over population
2. Depleting natural resources
3. Uneven distribution of wealth
4. Drugs/Alcohol addicts
5. People with financially disadvantage
6. People with genetic health issues
7. People with mental health issues

These are just few to name, but there are several more issues in current world. How do we solve this problem on a long run. Humanrace has survived and thrived for this many years, but will we go on with this pace of development and human suffering.

I read somewhere on the all wise internet, why not license people to breed. Imagine this: we require license to drive, we need certain degree of education to be able to be a doctor, we need a qualification for a job. Why is it that we dont need any qualification to be able to create new life. When everybody and anybody who is able to f**k around is able to give birth to a child who does not have a prospect. Only way this child will survive is either live a life of crime or some sort of deprived.

Dont you think it is criminal and selfish on behalf of people who give birth to a child who they know will have difficulty surviving, hunger and lack of dignity? Why dont we make Pro-Choice an accepted norm and to top it we should not allow people with certain traits to procreate.

You can go Yes or No for the Pool but here is what I think of it.
NO: Everybody has a right to give birth.
- You think this right lets you give birth to a child who you know will have genetic defects or will have difficult living and would end up in the world of crime or some sort of disadvantage.

YES: Restrict at risk people from procreating.
- You think we need to propogate able bodied and give a best chance to a child to survive and there by solving longterm issues in this world.

This is a highly controversial and difficult subject. I have mixed views about it and my views are constantly involving.

Our society and earth in general has very limited resources. Human population explosion is not just consuming our resources but stripping resources from other living beings on earth. That is why wanton breeding in my opinion is highly immoral.

I also have a huge problem with addicts and people with substance abuse problems having children. They clearly do not have the means, resources or maturity to raise a child. It is unfair to the child to grow up in such a toxic environment. Often they grow up to be addicts and abusers themselves. It is also unfair for society to bear the burden of these children.

I have similar feelings about birth defects, both physical and psychological. It is all nice and feel good to raise such children and defy the odds. But warm fuzzy feelings do not feed, serve or run the world. Looking at it objectively on facts alone and keeping sentiment aside these children end up draining resources in society and do not contribute anything constructive back. Unless a human provides value and gives back to society the existence is somewhat pointless.

That is why I feel that breeding should be limited to people who have the economic, social and psychological means to raise a healthy well-adjusted child who will contribute constructively to society.

It creates a slippery slope though. Selective breeding is not new though. The most well known instance of selective breeding in modern times is the Nazi experiments with eugenics. We all know what a dangerous precedent that can be.

Who decides what traits are desirable in breeders? Do we a way to make well informed objective decisions without letting our conditioned prejudices about race, religion, ethnicity, economic status and other biases come in the way. What is the optimum economical, social and psychological balance to breed? Some brilliant and illustrious people have come from abject poverty, substance abuse and squalor. Some of the worst criminals and psychopaths have come from good families with all means for a good life. How do we determine worth of human existence? Stephen Hawking is the greatest mind of our times and some of us with able bodies do not do much other than convert oxygen to carbon dioxide. Every field of human accomplishment is held in high regard by some and dismissed as pointless by others. Who chooses human value and productivity?

Finally most democratic constitutions guarantee the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Not the exact terms but the concept of it. Breeding is a natural and necessary aspect of human behavior. While all humans do not feel the need to breed, a large number of humans experience it. Scientifically, breeding is nature. We are hard wired to breed and to forbid breeding is reigning in nature. Sociologically, breeding for many people is a part of the human experience. For many breeding is the expression of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. To limit breeding would mean that we are willing to redefine what democratic free society stands for.

Ultimately, I think education with easy access to birth control and sexual health resources can help curb many problems. The millennials have the highest percentage of single and childless people amidst modern generations. People are actively choosing not to have children. With sex ed and access to birth control unwanted pregnancies and teenage pregnancies have significantly dropped. With low cost birth control and abortion children being born into substance abuse, crime or poverty has also dropped.

I think rather than enforcing breeding restrictions making education and sexual health resources freely and easily available plus affordable can make a huge difference for our population crisis. We also need to de-stigmatize birth control and abortion. Most importantly we need to start shaming families like the Duggars who breed indiscriminately and promote archaic notions about breeding and sexual health.

what next license to breathe and how much quota you can get? We shouldnt carry this wierd thought too far.. We dont need a controlled world.. we need good and bad to coexist... what needs go be curtailed is inhuman behavior where a parent feeds alcohol to her 6 year old... etc...somehow the hindu Karma theory makes sense to me.. in that aspect...
but hell no! i wanna breed even if i am a bird brain or an idiot...!!! leave some dna behind... :)

#return_to_hades when i was writing the post, I thought about eugenics. Although i am partially inclined to agree to the premiss of eugenics, it goes off into favoring a certain human traits/race rather than allowing wider flavors of race, gender, religion and human characteristics. Which i believe is too partial towards a certain section of privileged group of people.

#qwertyesque if we keep the pace of human population growth, we will get to a stage where we are forced to quota the resources. I dont think it is too long before we will get to that stage, if not in our life span may be in our children or their children life they will be forced to answer that question.

When the demand Vs supply balance is broken the natural selection process will take its course. I hate to see the day when disparity between people is too great to ignore and drastic steps are forced to be taken.

you know nature is self correcting. It knows how to balance out things..I am an agnostic yet I believe free-will is overrrated so is our capabilities... We are just an invisible speck of dust in this universe.. The world imbalance would be more because of greed of some rather than anything else...62 people!!!? is this some kind of joke

http://www.fastcoexist.com/3055618/62-people-own-as-much-wealth-as-half-the-global-population

is a bigger detriment than people indiscriminately producing babies!! 😊

I saw that article about 62 with most wealth, how crazy is it that they (and their family) managed to tip the balance of wealth distribution. I don't know if there is mother natures way of balancing that out soon.

That aside natures way of self correction is a bit harsh and heart breaking. As a collective consciousnesses people should find ways to drop the rate of growth with least pain. I am not saying don't give birth, but i am saying reduce the rate at which we are giving birth to new humans in this world.

The zero growth countries did just that and now look they have been swamped with immigrants from rapid population growth potentials.
it would be interesting to see how it affects the socio-political scenario in days to come

Because the idiots don't know when to stop making babies and cant sustain population growth. They spill over to other countries who screw up their economies too. What if they stop taking immigrants and close off the borders. Harden their souls and let the starvation take its course to wipe out the overpopulated nations.

Zero rate growth countries were facing shortage of workforce in their own countries and therefore saw an opportunity in increasing their workforce with the young immigrants. It may not be all heart and soul but need that made them welcome the immgrants.

BTW I am not advocating zero growth, I am advocating sustainability. We have a finite amount of resources on this earth and we are wasting it at alarming speed. There should be an equilibrium in every species that roam this earth, we as a human specie are wiping out the rest. What ever you call it survival of the fittest or by natural selection. But this definitely is removing the diversity in the gene pool. With the birth rate in Japan it is only a mathematical guess when the Japanese population reaches the tipping point and will need to go into a overdrive if they want to survive as a culture.
