"Every Student can LEARN

Just not on the same day or in the same way"

- George Evans

The process of learning is different for every individual. Overtime, many theories have been explored to figure out what these different L e a r n i n g S t y l e s are and how they enable an individual to grasp and learn easier.

But, how often do people actually recognize or acknowledge that every individual learns differently? How often do parents even consider the idea?

It's not unusual to see children succumb to the pressure that families and schools place them. To watch as they try and meet demands that have them up and running before they can even walk.
But education is not a race. It is not a competition.
It's a process. A journey.

Parents, schools, and peers, all influence the learning experience, and sometimes it isn't always positive. There are a lot of expectations put on children with regards to education. Expectations based on someone else's achievements, someone else's generalized standards, standards made based on the average person.
But what if you don't fall in that average person category?
What if what's average just doesn't work for you?
What if you're unique?
Both parents and teachers should take the time to acknowledge that there are exceptions to the rule. That there could be reasons other than a lack of trying, a lack of interest, a lack of intelligence or simply too into fun and games, that causes some to stumble in their learning.

It could be a matter of needing different styles of teaching or learning or it could be a matter of having learning disability that needs attention and can be conquered also.

So instead of speaking about what everyone else is doing and accomplishing and what one should be doing to achieve what is expected, take the time to figure out why understanding is so difficult for the individual, how can learning be made easier and better.

Let's talk about how we can

Over the years, homeschooling has decreased rapidly and the number of kids struggling in their education has increased. And what's the commonly used solution?

T u i t i o n and C o a c h i n g classes is a concept that, of late, has become more of a trend. Whether one can afford it or not, this trend is ahead of all in the score more category.

But, is this really a solution?

If you don't know why a child is struggling with studies, what is the point of tuition. Doesn't it make more sense to find out the real reason of the child's problems and take appropriate measures?

Tuition and coaching classes add more pressure on a child with their tedious ways of teaching, adding to the existing pressure from family and school. Pressure that becomes a sort of noose that suffocates those who can't achieve what everyone else wants them to.

Let's not let that happen anymore!

There was once a time when parents/guardians took time out of their busy schedules and helped the kids with their learning. This does not imply that parents today don't care about their child, but how often have they shown a real interest in knowing the way in which their kid learns?

Learning comes differently for every single person. All we're suggesting is that parents do take an interest because the style in which a child learns has a huge impact on their learning progress.

Identifying the right way of learning is just as important

as the learning itself.

Genuine attention towards the child does wonders for their confidence and progress. We may not realize it, but every bit of attention and interest matters.

Some kids are extremely sharp and some struggle because of the way they are being taught. There is nothing wrong with it. All they need is that little push, little guidance in the right direction and off they go!

Our brain is a complex organ, it remembers, it retains, it recalls. How this happens varies from one child to another. Some need a physical or kinesthetic learning approach, where learning happens through touching, feeling, or doing. Some learn through sounds, music, or rhythms. Some recall materials better when they write or talk it out. Some people need pictures, diagrams, and images to understand.

But different learning styles aren't the only things that go unrecognized. There are also learning disabilities like ADHD or dyslexia that can be overlooked or ignored.

Detecting the disability is a first step and this starts with the parents. Many deny the fact that their beloved child can be anything less than perfect. What happens then is the never-ending struggle to meet expectations that ends up dragging the child down without the right help.

It all comes down to-

Detecting the problem

Finding the right help

Figuring out what works easiest,

How to understand better,

And how to L.E.A.R.N.

Listen to the need of the child.

Children are not the same, their intellectual level varies. They may require any number of different approaches to learn. It's important that we don't only hear that they're doing poorly in school but we listen to what exactly the problem is.

Endeavor to help not hinder.

Sometimes it's not a matter of being unintelligent. More classes. More focus. More of the same is not going to help. Sometimes it's about learning how to help. About knowing what may be different. Like learning styles. Or learning disabilities.

Aspire to achieve great heights.

From the existence of many learning styles to learning disabilities, it's important to find what approach best works for a child. Find what is truly needed to help, to instill hope.

Respect feelings, rights, wishes, and situations.

Do not add to the stress, help alleviate it. When kids are not achieving what is expected of them academically, others should respect that there is a reason for the downhill slide. Respect them, treat them as individuals who need attention, help, and guidance. Not a scolding for bad grades and assumptions that ignore the true problem.

Nurture their strengths and spirits

Every child is unique and they have their own strengths and talent. Nurture it, get to know them, be a friend, lend a shoulder and give them the future that they deserve.
