I don't see why anyone would want to interview a rapist, know his "mindset" . Him being alive is already too much, on top of it, one "interviews" him? He does not deserve to live in the first place!

Does one have to know why an inhumane commits something like a rape? Isn't his very act reflecting on his so-called psyche? What else did the famous yellow journalist expect?

And the clamour by media, people upon banning the worthless interview that was to be aired on International Women's Day.

People have become so strange. Instead, a programme on self-defence, plight of different women in different strata, or stories on successful women would've been enriching to watch. Why doesn't any news channel go into slums, or ST areas to interview women? Of everyone in the country, a filthy criminal is interviewed.

An ogle from a man is enough to make one want to hide themself, and to watch an interview of a rapist? And people have 'right to know' a rapist's mind? This is a sick interest/curiosity. Rapes are frighteningly happening, hearing such incidents makes one horrified, and to see the criminal and to know his vews is simply too much. Don't understand the idea behind taking an interview, or the reason for so much outcry over banning. What purpose will the interview serve? Or what will the people do after knowing his "opinions" ?

Glad Indian govt banned telecast of this ugly "documentary".

Newspapers have been wasting so much space on this silly issue since a few days. Could've printed something better to read.

When we accuse the west of propaganda against India, what exactly is this propaganda for? What is the west gaining by this?

@Souro & Mister. K

While I will always ardently disagree with the ban because I view the documentary in a different light, I do accept that a sovereign nation does have the right to act in the best interest of its people.

In the end though, India did bungle up on many levels. Allowing the interview was a big oversight. That being said it is not unusual for press to interview high profile convicts. So even if they allowed it, they should have made it conditional and appointed someone to review activities.

Souro suggested a fact finding panel to build a case against the documentary. I also think inviting Leslee Udell and BBC executives to speak before the fact finding committee and answer questions would have also been beneficial. It is important to let the other side have a say when building a case against them.

One cannot predict alternatives, but a calmer calculated approach would have made the documentary less sensational. It made it more popular than it actually could have been. India completely messed up the entire situation. No matter what each side in this debate says or done, the damage is done. The documentary is as good as released worldwide thanks to the internet.

It is a learning curve. Perhaps it will give India better insight on how to handle global media and press. It doesn't help that Indian censorship is going through a highly regressive phase. India does need to show more commitment to free speech.

A democratic nation must uphold free speech. It should do everything possible to ensure free speech rights for anyone and everyone, even the slightest minority. It should make a commitment to protecting free speech. BUT under extreme circumstances in the interest of much greater national interest, free speech can be reviewed carefully, objectively and thoroughly and censored if there is sufficient cause. All sides should be given a fair say before the final decision.

@Angel-likeDevil: I'm with you.

I found this initiative better than the documentary. Hope more people take such initiatives whether to teach women self-defense, or to start programs to educate young kids, teenagers.

"Yes, the safety of women is a matter of concern and everyone needs to do something about it, including you and me. Gone are the days when you scream for men to run to protect you, it's about protecting yourself.

Akshay Kumar has taken the initiative to teach women self defence. Supporting him in the endeavour is Aaditya Thackeray who made these classes absolutely free. The first batch included 2000 women of all age groups and from varied professions. "

About that POS Mukesh Singh: it's not like he would find it within himself to say something good and redeem himself a little bit before his worthless life is terminated. So the next best step should have been to pay him or beat the crap out of him (or both) but whatever it is, extract another interview out of him where he says something to the effect of "During my interview with that English lady, I was udner pressure to speak what went through my mind at the time of the incident but ever since that incident, that girl's spirit has been haunting me and I have nightmares day and night. I am seeing visions of hell. I realize how wrong I was. I want to apologize to her, her parents, her family and her friends for the pain I have caused them. Please forgive me". Air that interview on all channels. May be that would accomplish some damage control.

I had the same thought, although what he should say was a bit different in my version.

Assuming Mukesh Singh was bought, what about the statements given by his defense lawyers? It was not the only interview where they voiced their opinion freely. They have been airing their views in defense of the rapist murderer proudly on several occasions- on national TV channels , newspapers and magazines. I wouldnt mind if someone beats the crap out of them but I dont see how anything they say now is going to undo any damage.
Mukesh Singh and his ilk speaking nonsense can be understood , lawyers get paid for defending their clients in the courtroom so their nonsense before the judge can also be understood but when these lawyers go on shooting their trap time and again before the camera its no longer just defending their client. They actually went to the extent of promoting honour killings which is a legal offense! What sort of legal professionals do we have in our supreme court !!! Its a blot on the whole legal profession!

Not sure if the documentary aired the views of our esteemed politicians. That would have nailed it!

See I have a very different perspective on this issue.

I don't expect a rapist to be repentant or apologetic. When he justifies his crimes based on excuses like "women should not be out at night" and "she should not be with non family men" , I want it to impact people. I want all the people who give such advice or express such views to feel sick, repulsed and shocked that their views align with those of rapists. I want them to reflect if holding such views encourages rape.

When a rapist apologizes, he apologizes for his act not the views. If Mukesh Singh apologizes, I feel the result will be that "Oh he knows the rape was wrong. Women should not be out at night or be with non family men, but he shouldn't have raped"

There are quite a few who see it my way. But others probably see it the way you or Souro do.

In the end my goal is not just to fight against rape, but fight against all notions that seek to restrict and limit women, combat the mindset that makes people feel that it is oK to harass or demean, if not rape certain groups of women who are too progressive for their own good.

The issue is not the documentary or its banning or not banning. The real issue is that there are too many people who hold similar views to the rapists and their defense lawyers. That gives a sense of justification to these criminals. It is alarming that they feel absolutely no remorse nor any fear after such a brutal murder.

There are two issues here. One is the damage his crass remarks would cause to the psyche of the gullible. Another is the damage it would do to the image of the country.

A contrite criminal might give a little closure to the victim's survivors. That is not what happened here. He made it worse.

In your stance, the impact that you talk about could be negative or positive. We can't shoulder the risk of the negative. The kind of mass introspection that you are talking about is almost quixotic. Are you sure your audience is ready for that?

I don't know if he actually believes in what he is saying, so can't speak for him. But one has to consider that he is fighting a case and fighting to win it, so he will go to any length to get a favourable outcome for his client.
