Nope. Censorship in India is shockingly appalling and regressive. It is an embarrassment to a nation that is one of the world's fastest growing economy and having such an emphasis on education.

Movies like Girl With Dragon Tattoo, Fifty Shades of Grey get banned. Words like "virgin" and "lesbian" are objected to as obscene.

That is just mass media censorship. Government deleting critical FB groups or politicians forcing social media to clamp down on free speech is rapidly sliding down to China levels. Teens were arrested for saying they were glad Bal Thackeray passed away. Shiv Sena forced IF to delete anti-Thackeray threads. Congress govt clamped down on several anti-Sonia pages and groups.

No.Idealism has always failed realism.Flawlessness in beauty and society is impossible to achieve.

It is not about achieving perfection. You have to aim high for marginal accomplishments. Seeking marginal growths leads to zero accomplishments.

It's high time we stop comparing India with others. Each society is different.

There is nothing wrong with benchmarking. Benchmarking against a successful model is not the same as comparison.

I agree you can't compare societies like apples to apples. That is why it irks me to know end when criticism about India is countered with "we are better than middle east" or "it happens in XYZ too"

What do you mean by 'reasonably successful'? It's ridiculous to give credits of a nation's falling crime rate to its liberal censor/certification board.

Correlation and causation work in both ways. Censorship either has an effect on crime rate in both direction or has no effect.

Personally, I do not believe in causation between censorship and crime. Crime depends on society. The prevailing attitudes and beliefs in society. Gun violence in USA has been linked to video games, gun control laws etc. But teens in other nations like Japan and Germany have been shown to be exposed to more violent video games. Switzerland has the most lax gun control laws in the world. Yet none of these nations suffer gun violence. Similarly, the highest rates of teen pregnancy and STDs are found in school districts that endorse abstinence only education. While nations like France with the most liberal approaches have the lowest rates.

The key to solving any social problem is not in censorship but founded in education.

Look,If you talk of France..their rape rate is higher than that of india.Oops..forgive me for comparing.
And wait..does you giving me examples of our own sins helps in anyway why the documentary should be released or not?
Nope.

Education is awareness. Not sensational documentaries viewed only by the already aware audience.
PS: we can have a new topic over censorship in general.. I guess.

Censorship is everywhere if we start comparing countries, then Sweden is more progressive than other countries when it comes to web surveillance and censorship. Is there really a need for comparison though?

Living in a pink bubble of Idealism ain't the solution to deal with a real world filled with spectrum of people. Democracy has to take in consideration all sections of people including those who will take a documentary from a very non Ideal perspective to boost up their own idiotic thoughts to create more friction and violence for the current state of the nation.

Instead of such documentaries which doesn't show anything new, we need campaigns targeted at the real world which is filled with people who don't give two hoots about public forums and debates or those who don't even have access to social media. One needs to start at the grass root level.

P.S: Sorry to hear about your past. But I like your attitude. Keep at it.

@bold - exactly.

Oh but no. Lets not talk about repercussions.

All of India is going to see THE DOCUMENTARY as how some pseudos here have analyzed it.

after all, all Indian population has got the same Perspective. It can not go wrong.

And please No image of nation ok. It doesn't matter if the whole world generalizes it. World media portrays us crap.

While SOME (who actually work towards it and NOT Talk) do their ground level work to change the mentality,
Let's encourage the world to come in our country and do whatever they want.

We should just accept the problem. OK. Or you are having DENAILISM.

And mind you, All that some of us can do is, Debate and Talk. Can't even make a little change. But Talk big we will. 😉

Loving your replies.

Realism vs Idealism.

Majority goes with Idealism. Coz lets face it. Its easy. It only requires you to talk.

Realism requires you to actually contribute towards making the change. 😊

He and Nirbhaya's parents are under pressure to stay quiet.

Government is hard at work and has issued threatening letters to TV channels and newspapers also. Check Legally India blog.

He has said nothing except same old rant of anti India and country's image.

The documentary had real lawyers, convicts, CM, SC & HC judges. How is it fake? Nirbhaya's parents were real.

Infact it did not say anything different from what this guy described in his first interview to a TV channel in 2012 after this incident.

Clear cut pressure from government to justify ban.

Loved the aggression in your post.Sometimes when assertiveness doesn't help..aggression is the only tool left.

Only sarkar matters?

And that too the woman who said that it affects tourism?

Same here! Who are these bunch of people not even selected on the basis of credibility (like suspended censor board CEO Rakesh Kumar) to say what is correct and what is not for the country and it's people? Ratings will always be a better option than censoring the electronic media.

@Bold- and most importantly, if the Govt is straightaway banning the documentary, how will we form an opinion of the documentary and come to know whether it is maligning the country or not? Let people watch it and form their own opinion and THEN criticize. I have been discussing this issue with some of my friends who claim that the documentary is trying to malign the image of the country and then say, 'isliye maine toh link kholke bhi nahin dekha'!

Releasing the documentary and then banning.. ridiculous.
@atomnis
It indeed reveals how crappy our judiciary can be.But there are a number of other reasons why it should be banned.I hope you read our discussion.
