Hi Everyone,

I would like you to help me in debating this topic How do we address Strangers?

When we want to talk to a stranger, do we address the person as Uncle , Aunty or something else?

Who are the people who should be called Uncle and Aunty? Are they known to you. or you just judge the person by his or her appearance?

Should 30 yrs and above people should be addess as Aunties and Uncles.

what is the right thing to call a stranger when you are in a party or in a function or lost in a place?

Dont you think that the stranger may feel offended with you saying Uncle or aunty to them?

Plz comment on this?

When we want to talk to a stranger, do we address the person as Uncle , Aunty or something else? depends upon their age, I mean if they seem to look like above 50+ then Uncle and Aunty is what I could call as these people dont mind them calling as such. 😊

Who are the people who should be called Uncle and Aunty? Are they known to you. If they are known to us then they are not strangers and we would call them according to their relation to us. 😊 or you just judge the person by his or her appearance? If they are totally strangers and there is a need for us to talk with them for some reason then yes, I will go by their appearance. Like I said, if they look like 50+ then I will call them Uncle and Aunty and if they look younger then that then Madam or Sir would be appropriate as generally calling by Madam and Sir is acceptable rather than Aunty or Uncle. 😳 or just say hello, and say whatever you want to say....

Should 30 yrs and above people should be addess as Aunties and Uncles. No Way... 😆

what is the right thing to call a stranger when you are in a party or in a function or lost in a place? In a party, we can introduce ourselves or use a common friend or accquantaince to introduce us to that person and then after getting introduced, we can call them Mr. or Mrs. so and so, if they feel odd about it they will let us know and tell us what we should call them... 😆

In a lost place, well say...hello excuse me.. and ask the question... no need to address or Madam or Sir it ok I guess... it depends upon the situation also.... 😊

Dont you think that the stranger may feel offended with you saying Uncle or aunty to them? Of course they might, thats why addressed them as Madam or Sir or didi or bhaishaab or just ask them... 😊

Plz comment on this?

😳

Some individuals who are not that much younger than ourselves also call us aunty and uncle.. my policy is.. .if they say that then give them back with a polite, yes aunty or uncle what were you saying and they get the message... 😆 😳

😆 😆😆 😆

or how about "Hey Chief". that's so (chiefs and) indian, isnt it? 😆

i think just calling someone "maam" or "sir" should be enuff, but it also depends on the other person. if they look like they've never seen the insides of an english medium school, then maybe add "ji" and make it "maam-ji" or "sirji". and if they look like the beedi-smoking kha-ke-paan-banarsi-wala types, then i suppose it should be "memsaab" or "bhaisaab".😊

here i am trying to make distinctions based on on the aura/ education someone projects, not just age. age is harder to guess. for example, there are some teens that u'd think are way way older, u know what i mean, no? cant be calling them aunties, wat say?😉😆

Generally I just Introduce myself and seeing the response take it from there. Cann't help kids, as parent teach them to call people over teens - Uncles/Aunty. Simply avoid parents eye and give a stare to kid and then politely let them know call me "Whatever you want" - kids are cute/smart they get it quickly😆

if you are less than 15, then do think of calling a person over 30 uncle / aunty. If you are an adult, hold those itchy horses 😉 😆 .. else chances are you will appear foolish 😉

Kids are cute though. Few years ago, when I did not have my own nephew yet, this 4-5 year old kid as looking for his mom/ aunty/ someone in a party since he was sort of lost. He was walking towards our group of people and looked in my direction, pointed his finger and addressed "aunty, where's mommy".. so i looked behind me and started looking for his aunty until, he touched my saree and repeated "aunty, aunty, where's mommy? 😆" then my tubelight lit up.

I prefer being called sen~orita unless a kid is calling me. I lowwweee to be called masee, mamee, atttya, foi, chachee, aunty definitely yet ONLY by the sweet budles of joy.

You are upset at being called Uncle, hence upping the age limit?😉

In a general situation, as long as you address a person with respect, it doesn't really matter. Don't know why people get so upset at being addressed as uncle or aunty!! I had become an aunty, even before I was born (to one of my cousin's son) so never associated being called an aunty to my age 😛 Some of my colleagues are so touchy about their age that they insist the students address them by their first name 😲.

If you are in a party, go introduce yourself, the other person will do the same, add a title for respect when addressing them next, and if they don't like it they will let you know how to address them.

Theek kaha na Qwerty Uncle 😉😆

Actually it depends...When I was 10, I used to call all 15-20 people didi and bhayya..Then as I was growing, the same people I started calling by their names, and 30+ people didi etc...

Aunty and Uncle in India is used not to offend someone but its a way of respectfully addressing someone...Of course some people miss use it.. 😆
