scared to settle is more like it . A guy I know complains that he gets beatn up by his wifey😲
When asked why he put up with it he said that she would go to the balcony and start shouting at the top of her voice. This chap did not want to atract unnecessary stares from the neighbours therefore bore all indignities. Besides people only made fun of him and none took him seriously. At times she wouldnt even offer him any food

ya sure, but you're missing something here. Folks back in WWI had great experience too using just horses and bayonets😆. See, you have to evolve with the times, go for new technology, new ideas, know what I mean?😉😆

Are you suggesting that marriage is comparable to horses and bayonets 😕 and how is sleeping around with different partners comparable to new technology 😕

Oh sure why not . The world would look upto him for having a gori chitti biwi. If she beats him up black and blue he should be manly to tolerate that
Why do people tolerate violence at all 😕

I was not comparing one with another. I was making a point about IDEAS, specifically how new and better ideas have supplanted older ones. There's something called critical reading, you know.😆

I disagree that marriage is a "choice."

We are socialized from the get go to accept marriage as an ultimate form of romantic commitment. The justice system and the economy both depend on it. Most people end up getting married because it's the norm. They accept it as part of their lives. Some people get married because of the legal legitimacy, or because of family pressure, or what not. Others do it because they are really into the attention of having a fancy wedding and what not. Sometimes people feel insecure about the stability of a relationship unless they are actually married.

Whatever the rationale, the point is that it is a significant social institution, and that in itself makes it a necessity. It's so important that even gay people fight for the right to get married. Which always fascinated me, because the whole idea of a gay lifestyle can challenge heteronormativity and monogamy in so many interesting and productive ways, but the mainstream gay rights movement is all about having the right to get married just like straight people do. So there you have it.

"because the whole idea of a gay lifestyle can challenge heteronormativity and monogamy in so many interesting and productive ways, but the mainstream gay rights movement is all about having the right to get married just like straight people do."

I think I lost you there. Care to elaborate?

On a similar note, I also find it interesting how people who say marriage is an outdated institution and needs to be done away with are the same ones who would fight teeth-and-nail for social acceptance for gay marriage. To me marriage is not a necessity but it's not outdated either.
In the end it's important to have a good relationship over legal formalities and cultural rituals. But doing the latter are by no means outdated; and much, in the same way, living together is by no means following an uncultured lifestyle. Whatever floats your boat. Just be honest, truthful and don't harm others. One should have the right to marry or not marry.
