I didn't say work all the time. Every employee is entitled to take their appropriate breaks, along with the unaccounted time for washroom and smoke breaks. I believe that's more than enough breaks a person needs on a normal 8 hour shift (7.5 to be precise). I'm sorry but if my employee tells me s/he doesn't enjoy the work they do for my company, I'll show him/her the door. I'm sure there are tons out there waiting for that job, and would do it with pleasure. I realize it's good to have fun while doing your work, but let's place ourselves in the employer's shoe for now. Would you like it if one of your employee was busy on Facebook during his/her work hours? As an employer, I want the best from my employees in terms of productivity. Every minute wasted takes away from the overall productivity of a person regardless of them finishing their work on time or not. That being said, I'm not sure if the IT guys would be pleased with having to tamper with their firewall settings throughout the day as per every department's/person's whims. To be fair, I'd still go with no entertainment sites for anyone at all times.
I'm sure if not cafeterias, there are lunch rooms? And if nothing at all, there's always the option of going downstairs/out of the building to a near by cafe or something just to get some fresh air. It's not necessary one stays glued to their cubicles for 8 hours. I apologize if I fail to understand your situation here as every company has their own rules set out, but that's what I think it should be like.
If the boss is happy, the employees are automatically happier! True story ;).
Lastly, I don't mean to sound anal in anyway, but labor is amongst the biggest budget that's dished out annually, and it's frustrating that most employees fail to realize it. And if your part of some union based labor board, it's a whole different story there. Finally it's the company and the people that receive your services that suffers the most, and not the employees!
Thanks for your opinion… even though most of what you have written is right from the employers point of view I still don't think its fair to have these restrictions on the employees.. the employers are not doing a favor by giving them work or paying their salaries.. the employees contribute as much to a company's growth…it's the result of employees efforts if a company runs successfully so an employer shouldn't look at their employees just as a means to get their work done… besides there are other reasons which effects an employees productivity, the very same breaks you mentioned… in fact having access to the sites will be easier since the employee can work and access those sites both at the same time…whereas going out on breaks will be more time consuming..
Not always when the boss is happy the employees will be happier.. some bosses do not believe in sharing their happiness…and by employees happiness I meant mentally, that is if they are not stressed out they will perform better..
When you are at a desk job you don't really get to go out of the office, yes you may not understand it but it happens here with majority of the employees, they do spend most of their time in their cubicles.. with their work.
I think your main concerns are from the employers point of view whereas mine are from employees.. it does not match obviously…. But its good if you are happy with the blocking of sites… what I think is ultimately a person should be happier in the environment they work in…as they spend a major part of their day working.. one of the ways they can be is if they can access the entertainment sites along with their work…
