Not a Tolkien fan myself, but I loved the movies. Dunno if it's hypocritical for me to. But I could never get into his prose - they seemed devoid of any human interest whatsoever. Also, I found most of the characters one-dimensional, and felt the movies did a better job improving them (oh, scratch that - didn't like RoTK for the most part, especially when compared with the first two installments).
But I will have to admit that, as much as I disliked going through his prose, I liked the places he described as a concept and in the movies. He is a master of world-building, and that, I think, whether you are a Tolkien fan or not, is undeniable. 😆
Edit: Yes, Liv Tyler was good But there is hardly any below average actor from the LoTR trilogy, is there?
I remember reading your dislike of Tolkien in some post in Book Talks forum 😆
Initially i was turned off by that long winding prose but once i got used to it.. it was fun ... i liked the poems 😆 and i liked the philosophy behind it.. and the stories were enjoyable as well once i got used to his writing style
.. And I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Faramir of books and his love story with Eowyn was great.. hated the changes to Faramir's character and deletion of their love story in the movies...
Overall though .. movies did a great job in translating LOTR ... I liked the changes they brought to characters... Aragorn's self doubt was intriguing and the Boromir's death scene was brilliant ... loved it more than the novels.. these movies were one of the few instances where i like the adaptation as much as the original 😆
and oh ... RotK battle scene is one of my favorites 😆
I think with Tolkien you might like his other works .. like those tales related to the First Age of Middle Earth that have been published .. I havent read Silmarillion yet but i read the Unfinished Tales ... his prose doesn't seem so fatiguing in it and i was engrossed ..

Which hardcore Tolkien fans complain about as Arwen is mostly in the appendices. 😆
Have you come across one of the internet theories that LOTR is anti-Islam? I had read a conspiracy theory that Middle Earth is Europe and the west and that Mordor represents Arab nations. It was weird. It was a long while back during LOTR heyday.
I wasn't a hardcore fan 😆 I read the novels bcos i tried watchinf FOTR and got lost .. so stopped watching it and went and bought the books ... so i was fine with Arwen bcos its not like i had been living and breathing LOTR for years ...
Na ... i wasn't into the whole forums and net thing then ...I only used net for assignments and that was AFTER i started my BA hehe ...
But considering, Faramir's dialogue in the TTT and Sam's musings in the same book, i dont understand why they would think it was anti Islam or whatever...
but there are LOTR geeks who try to figure out Tolkien's inspiration for Middle Earth and if it was Europe .. so i guess the other side will take umbrage with his portrayal of South and East 🤔
