Also, I found most of the characters one-dimensional, and felt the movies did a better job improving them (oh, scratch that - didn't like RoTK for the most part, especially when compared with the first two installments).
But I will have to admit that, as much as I disliked going through his prose, I liked the places he described as a concept and in the movies. He is a master of world-building, and that, I think, whether you are a Tolkien fan or not, is undeniable. 😆

Edit: Yes, Liv Tyler was good But there is hardly any below average actor from the LoTR trilogy, is there?

I remember reading your dislike of Tolkien in some post in Book Talks forum 😆

Initially i was turned off by that long winding prose but once i got used to it.. it was fun ... i liked the poems 😆 and i liked the philosophy behind it.. and the stories were enjoyable as well once i got used to his writing style

.. And I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Faramir of books and his love story with Eowyn was great.. hated the changes to Faramir's character and deletion of their love story in the movies...

Overall though .. movies did a great job in translating LOTR ... I liked the changes they brought to characters... Aragorn's self doubt was intriguing and the Boromir's death scene was brilliant ... loved it more than the novels.. these movies were one of the few instances where i like the adaptation as much as the original 😆

and oh ... RotK battle scene is one of my favorites 😆

I think with Tolkien you might like his other works .. like those tales related to the First Age of Middle Earth that have been published .. I havent read Silmarillion yet but i read the Unfinished Tales ... his prose doesn't seem so fatiguing in it and i was engrossed ..

Which hardcore Tolkien fans complain about as Arwen is mostly in the appendices. 😆

Have you come across one of the internet theories that LOTR is anti-Islam? I had read a conspiracy theory that Middle Earth is Europe and the west and that Mordor represents Arab nations. It was weird. It was a long while back during LOTR heyday.

I wasn't a hardcore fan 😆 I read the novels bcos i tried watchinf FOTR and got lost .. so stopped watching it and went and bought the books ... so i was fine with Arwen bcos its not like i had been living and breathing LOTR for years ...

Na ... i wasn't into the whole forums and net thing then ...I only used net for assignments and that was AFTER i started my BA hehe ...

But considering, Faramir's dialogue in the TTT and Sam's musings in the same book, i dont understand why they would think it was anti Islam or whatever...

but there are LOTR geeks who try to figure out Tolkien's inspiration for Middle Earth and if it was Europe .. so i guess the other side will take umbrage with his portrayal of South and East 🤔

I get what you are saying about those refusals. I think after a point people simply got defensive.
It also makes me question the oft repeated stance about idol worship that is forbidden by some religions. Getting all worked up about accusations cast at a person, without trying to keep message and messenger separate amounts to a sort of Idol worship. Just the thing that was sought to be prevented by that very person ! Now thats ironical.

I had that post in mind as well and knew that I ought not be hypocritical.

But unfortunately, somewhere down the line the gist of the question was lost and people got too defensive. 🤔 I tried asking just fundamental questions about marriage and relationships, but by that time no one was willing/able to answer. That refusal to acknowledge something significant even in today's times when we know better times really bothers me. Hopefully, someone gets the point, somehow, someday. IMHO its a pretty serious issue.

@Arwen - Faramir was the best. I am so mad that the movie diluted his character and his story with Eowyn. Their entire conversation in the healing houses is one of the most beautiful pieces in literature. It really touched me.

I havent re read LOTR in ages but when i m in the mood, i just go and re read Faramir's scenes... those three chapters in TTT, and the handful in RotK 😳

Have to say though, i liked his son avatar in the movies... that "re taking" of Osgiliath with Pippin's song in the background! EPIC

I remember seeing this pic of Aragorn and Faramir in the Healing Houses... I actually went and saw extended edition scenes on youtube to try and catch that scene .. turns out it was one of those which wasn't included even in Extended Editions (really liked that bit which was included 😆)

I guess i should wait for some SUPER extended edition to watch that scene 😔

EDIT: wow i do use "the" ALOT 😆

This isn't the Devil's Den you guys are talking about are you? Oh how I hated that place. There's only one Dexter the Dog that I've heard of.🤔

Btw POH get there before me but seriously, well done Arwen for being one of the few rational members on that topic who was more than willing to answer all the questions that you could to the best of your ability and in a manner by which neither parties would get offended. :)

@Cunninglingust ... It is accepted by some Islamic traditions but not all ... There are doubts because of the vast years of oral traditions between the death of Prophet and collection and recording of the histories.. there are alot of accusations of fakes attributed or actual Hadiths been lost or mis interpreted etc ...

How does one decide what is fake and what is authentic?, are we dismissing something simply because we didn't like what we read about our favourite person?, that would be intellectually dishonest. Is it not true that Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are two of the most authentic hadeeths, highly regarded by Muslims, and second only to the Quran? (at least by Sunnis, are you Shia?).

Why is it that all four schools of Islamic jurisprudence set the minimum age of female maturity to 9?

You see, the criticism you raised against the hadeeths is equally applicable to the Quran as well, the Quran was compiled into textual form several decades after Muhammad's death, by that time, there was already several different versions of the Quran floating around in the newly established Islamic empire, and what with Uthman burning all the other copies later on, how can you be so sure that what's written in the Quran is actually what was said by Muhammad?

Went to see The Dirty Picture yesterday. It's Vidya Balan all the way. Take her out of the picture, and you have quite the damp squib.

I'd recommend the movie to anyone who's always wondered what all the fuss about Silk Smitha and podgy Thambi chicks was in the 80s.

Komal Nahta seemed to be praising the movie a lot and I'd trust his opinion over Taran Adarsh's any day. (the guy is always busy sucking up to SRK for Lord knows what reason)

I'm surprised Vidya took up the role but from the reviews it seems like she's done full justice and the script is supposed to be pretty good! Will go watch the film for her some time this week but unfortunately I'll have to bear the sight of Emraan Hashmi too.🤢
