Precisely my point. We have our brains to think and decide for ourselves. We have a sense of morality and right programmed in us. Scripture is just a guide, not the be all and end all. If our senses and morality find flaws with something, it does not mean the entire religion is bad or wrong. We have to do be open to critical evaluation of our own faith. We have free will and conscience precisely for that reason, to think and evaluate – not blindly adhere to something because everyone else does.

Exactly similar? Other than a few misunderstandings, and one prominent name-calling that I remember (which comes nowhere close to the ones seen in the other thread), and place-shifting (compared with locked twice) that thread progressed pretty well.

I see why you feel both situations were an instance of one group rallying or bullying to derail or shut down the thread. In fact this is often common with many threads, thankfully not as much on DM. However, I feel some of the differences between the situation are pivotal and the comparison is quite unfair.

I don't think anyone was trolling in the thread that got locked and posting essentially only to mock or deride the other side. No one claimed the debate was a waste of time, but still continued to take angry potshots for the sake of it. I hope you can see why people do have a good reason to get upset and react when placed in such a situation. I won't defend and say the reaction as fair or correct, and I've apologized to you for it since a lot of it was wrong. Just pointing out there was a good reason why it happened. I don't think the reaction of the group this time around was warranted or that they had received similar provocation.

As someone on the receiving end of both situations, I completely understand if you find the situations and reactions comparable. There maybe others who feel the same way you do, and its completely legit. I also get why some people may find that the Islam debate was a lot more provocative and inflammatory. I just wanted to express why I found the comparison unfair.
