Why should Marathi not be a national language?

For one it is spoken only in the state of Maharashtra and bordering regions. In fact more people in India know Hindi or English. Marathi itself is a late development from the Indo-Aryan language tree and is not as old as Hindi either.

Secondly, Marathi is a predominant language in Bombay, but not all Bombay residents speak Marathi. Over the years with immigrant population Marathi has diminished as more and more people understand either Hindi or English. Also for years the Marathi spoken in Bombay is not proper Marathi, but an adulterated form of Marathi. The language is usually a hodge podge of Marathi and other tongues.

Also even amidst the Marathi speaking population there is such diversity in dialects that there is not one uniform Marathi that can be presented.

Finally, Marathi is not my mother tongue. I don't speak Marathi at home. I speak a different language and can converse in two different dialects of that language. The Maharashtra State Board compelled me to learn Hindi as well as Marathi formally. In fact instead of letting me drop Marathi as a state language, I had to split Hindi if I wanted to learn Sanskrit or French. While I agree that all state citizens should learn basics of the state language - I disagree strongly in forcing everyone to learn the state language in advance form and give it precedence over the national language.

Bottom line, I'm not a supporter of overzealous supporters of Hindi, state language or mother tongue. In the end human nature is to communicate and if we don't speak the language we can make wild animated gestures. I'm not a supporter of name changes, over zealous Indianizations and rejection of all things foreign in the name of patriotism. There is more to patriotism than names. There are more important issues to address than the right names.

And you can all me Sarian if you will.

Marathi itself is a late development from the Indo-Aryan language tree and is not as old as Hindi either. hindi is not pure... unless they can use heavily borrowe urdu delhites will stop speaking hindi.. no one, munshi premchand "class" hindi.(meaning without urdu). so old or new doesnt matter...every state in the north has its version of hindi.. the one in UP (I think) being the closest to purity...

The language is usually a hodge podge of Marathi and other tongues. just like $ is the world currency, marathi can be the ruling language doenst have to be spoken everywhere to be deemed that way.. It is important to realize this beri beri important fact.. i hope you understand sarian...if you dont know marathi you lose the ability to know whats right marathi... Kaay?

Also even amidst the Marathi speaking population there is such diversity in dialects that there is not one uniform Marathi that can be presented. dialects are there for hindi too.. some are cryptic like in haryana... bhojpuri infact they have ensured hindi is mutilated beyond recognition.. hindi is spoken in most of northern india where most people are uneducated!!Alabama, kansas or wisconsin dont set standards for the US.. NY, california does!! So you can say marathi gets that advantage...

Finally, Marathi is not my mother tongue. So? if you grew up there and still remember KC..then should atleast make an effort.....I don't speak Marathi at home.agreed I speak a different language and can converse in two different dialects of that language. So what I speak kannada, konkani and still am fluent in marathi... Right you are so also you should detest making hindi the national language without rhyme or reason....if numbers matters the world would be speaking mandarin today!!! but no people know the classic value for languages like French, Spanish, marathi, english... etc...now think if you were not educated in mumbai would be what you are!!??? Jai maharashtra

Bottom line, I'm not a supporter of overzealous supporters of Hindi, state language or mother tongue. I'm not a supporter of name changes, over zealous Indianizations and rejection of all things foreign in the name of patriotism. There is more to patriotism than names. There are more important issues to address than the right names. ok but every issue ends with same level of importance as this in the end.. if you notice.. we just make our priorities and think thats more important..

And you can all me Sarian if you will. oh and I thought it was sarina all this while!!! ok...

Ok lets get on the same page.. how about konkani!! come on thats our mother tongue now!!!I am sure tamilians will be ok with that too.. they just dont like Gauri kaku's language.😆

Considering that you are a Mallu, I do appreciate the attempt made....but I need to correct it.
It's 'Aaj kal Hindi bhasha ka uchit (without the h) prayog koi nahi (not e) karta !!
PS: Patriotism is also acceptance of all languages(regional) being spoken in India. Anyone opposing any one regional language to his/her own mother-tongue as being superior is an unpatriotic to me.
The beauty (read unity) of Bharat is in different languaged people existing here and not in number of different languages spoken in India.
Jai Bharat!
Jai Hind!!
