Kunti was unmarried when Karna was born to her, while she was married when Yudhisthira, Bhima, and Arjuna were born to her. Though the sons of Gods, the Pandavas were considered the sons of Pandu because Kunti and Madri were married to him when they conceived them, and also, it was according to the wish of Pandu that the Pandavas were born. It's not like Kunti and Madri had an affair behind his back. Actually, MB says that Pandu at first had wanted Kunti to beget a child from one of the sages living in that area (as he and his brother had been born the same way), because he himself could not give them children, but it was then that Kunti had told him about the divine mantra as a last resort. Pandu them deemed that the children of Gods would be more valiant than the children of sages and told Kunti to invoke the God of Dharma first.
How would Kunti be able to explain Karna's birth? She was first a young girl, second unmarried, and third, she had not had Pandu's permission when she had called upon Lord Surya.
