Usually when you learn these dances formally – they have mattress pads to practice stunts and tricks. Banging or hurting your head is not as much of a concern as neck or spinal injuries.

Not to bust anyone's bubbles but to be able to do most stunts especially head spins, suicides etc. you need to be practicing gymnastics and acrobatics pre-adolescent. Most people who do those either had formal gymnastic training or tried street dancing prior to being teens or engaged in a lot of acrobatic play growing up. Once in the mid-late teens – the body finds it very difficult to master balancing and advanced flexibility, using and distributing strength correctly. So if you are mid-late teens and not doing headspins or attempted headspins already – you are less likely to master it.

But you should be very proud that you know a lot about Indian classical. Firstly it is great to keep the culture and tradition going. Secondly, once you have a foundation in classical Indian or ballet – the techniques and skills you have mastered makes it easy to take on any dance forms. It is much more difficult Latin or Hip Hop dancers to learn classical styles, but those who have classical down can diversify much faster if they are open culturally and mentally.

PS: I'm assuming you two are gals – so you wouldn't be b-boying. You would be just break dancing or breaking. Break dancing boys are b-boys. Girls are b-girls or more commonly fly-girls.

U r right, I am a girl and sadly i am in my mid 20s. However, right now where i live, there isn't any ballet school either, forget street dancing. I know stunts and gymnastics and acrobatics are very very difficult, requires a lot of practise not to mention core muscle strength and helluva fitness. Maybe all i will ever manage to learn is a some proper hip hop . Going by the speed at which i get to learn new stuffs now , if i can manage to learn basic stunts like cartwheels, roll over, sommersault that will be a huge achievement for me.

Thanks a lot. At times when i get frustated at life, i remind myself about the chances i got to learn different things, and that i got introduced to Indian classical dance and music at such an early age.

I just learnt ballet, very recently and i only learnt the basics. I love it. You are right, i found learning ballet wasn't that difficult, it came very naturally. There are so many things common to ballet and the different Indian classical dance forms. It is very interesting, like the half sitting position in bharatnatyam is actually a demi plie. Also The dance form manipuri has so so many things common to ballet, soft movements, using energy from earth, springs and pirouttes and peaks, even the mudras are quite close to hand movements, the famous 5th position which is used even in manipuri. i wonder why not many people have explored that. infact the DID masters largely ignore this beautiful classical dance form. Only when amrita was there she brought some manipuri in .

Anywho, i have been doing yoga since the age of 5, although doing it very on again off again way for the past 8-9 yrs or so, do u think if i try i can atleast learn some basic stunts?
