CHAPTER 24
"What ..you mean to say Suhasini's son Adarsh.? Have you lost your mind Swadheenta"
Mr. Ramakrishnan exploded.
"I am sorry Appa, I did not know that time that you and Mam..."
Swadheenta tried to explain
"Shut up. I don't want to hear another word about those people. And I will never let you marry into that family."
Mr. Ramakrishnan declared
"But why Appa? They are really nice people. You know that."
Swadheenta pointed out.
"I know and that is why I am saying it. These lawyers and bureaucrats, they only know how to deceive people."
Mr. Ramakrishnan said bitterly
"Come on Appa. I am a lawyer too. Mam is not like that. I am sure you had some misunderstanding"
Swadheenta made one desperate attempt.
"I have had enough of your nonsense Swadheenta. If you don't want to marry Jeevan, it fine. We can find another suitable match for you, but not Adarsh. That's my final decision."
Saying this Mr. Ramakrishnan stormed out of the room.
Swadheenta was caught in a fix. Appa thinks Suhasini Mam betrayed him. That was why they had broken up. Now if she clears their misunderstanding, they would get back together. Then Mam would tell him about their ploy to separate them. That would spoil Adarsh's image even more infront of Appa.
Revathy was till now silently witnessing the argument between father and daughter. After Mr. Ramakrishnan left, she went up to her daughter and said,
"Don't lose hope. Actually a betrayal for the second time has broken his heart. It is all my fault."
"No Amma. Please don't blame yourself. That is a thing of the past. I am sure Appa has forgiven you."
Swadheenta said. Then after a brief pause added,
"Amma, I wanted to tell you somethig."
"What is it?"
Revathy asked
Swadheenta explained her dilemma to her mother. Revathy listened carefully and then said,
"Hmm...you people have really complicated the things. Now it is going to be really difficult to convince Vijay."
"And I am sure it is going to be as difficult to convince Suhasini mam."
Swadheenta said helplessly
"Let me see what I can do. Just don't take any hasty decisions in the meantime"
Revathy said.
Swadheenta felt some relief from the assurance. She nodded with a smile
A few days later in Delhi,
Suhasini was coming out of the court after a hearing when she saw Manohar.
"You here ?"
"Yes, came for some official work. If you are done here, let's go for a cup of coffee"
Manohar suggested
"Sure...let's go"
Suhasini agreed.
"So, how was your hearing?"
Manohar asked when were inside the coffee shop
"Manohar, I am pretty sure you have not called me for coffee to discuss my case. Why don't you come straight to the point"
Suhasini said, taking a sip from the coffee cup.
"You are so good at reading people's faces. Why are you refusing to see the hurt on your son's face?"
Manohar asked
"You know what he has done. Still you are supporting him."
Suhasini said, annoyed
"I am supporting no one, but please for a moment try to see things from their poiny of view. Do you think it would have been easy for them to tell you about their relationship after knowing that Mr. Ramakrishnan and you were seeing each other."
Manohar pointed out
"I get what you are saying. However that does not justify their plotting. I never expected that my own kids would do this to me. First Abhay eloped and now Adarsh... Where did I go wrong Manohar?"
Suhasini's voice choked towards the end.
Just as Manohar was about to console her, he saw Mrs. Ahuja walking towards their table.
"Namaste Samdhi ji, what a pleasant surprise. I can't tell you how happy I am to see both of you here together. You know people have the habit of making such filthy rumours. At our last kitty party, I heard that Suhasiniji was..."
Mrs. Ahuja stopped midway when she saw Suhasini get up from her seat angrily.
"I am sorry Lataji, I will have to leave for some urgent work. You continue."
Suahsini said, trying hard to control her anger.
After Suhasini left, Mrs. Ahuja took a seat and asked Manohar.
"If you don't mind, can I sit here? Actually Simmi's father told me to wait here. He will be coming shortly... So, did you know that the person Suhasini ji had been ...err..dating was staying at Sinha House?"
"Yes, I know about that."
Manohar said indifferently
"And you are okay with that? You know what a bad influence this might be for your sons. I am so worried for Simmi. We must do something before things get out of hand"
Mrs. Ahuja said shaking her head.
"I am sorry samdhanji, but it is her life and her house and she knows perfectly well how to handle it. And Simmi and the boys are mature enough. I don't think we should worry about them"
Manohar was cursing his stars for having to be stuck there at the coffee shop with Mrs. Ahuja.
He wondered what excuse to make in order to get rid of her.
Adarsh was waiting impatiently for his Dad's call. He was praying fervently that Dad be able to convince Mom. He did not know what would he do if that doesn't happen. Finally his phone rang. Yes, it was Dad.
"Hello Dad, what happened ?Please tell me she has agreed."
Adarsh asked anxiously
"I am sorry son. I tried my best, but then Mrs. Ahuja came out of nowhere and spoiled everything. She started spouting her nonsense and your mother left the place in irritation"
Manohar said
"That means your efforts went in vain. There Swadheenta's Appa is bent on getting her married to some Tamilian guy. I don't understand how to convince them."
Adarsh said giving up.
"Don't give up so easily. Where there is will, there shall surely be a way. I will try and talk to her once more. I am sure she will keep aside her ego for your happiness. Just give her some time."
Manohar tried to motivate Adarsh
"How much time Dad? In Abhay's case, she never agreed. That is why they were forced to elope. I am afraid..."
Adarsh did not complete his sentence. He realised he had gone too far. He hung up the phone.
At that moment Abhay and Simmi arrived there.
"Any good news Bhaiya?"
Simmi asked
"Nope, Dad could not convince her"
Adarsh shook his head
"I heard Mr. Ramakrishan is not allowing Swadheenta to leave Chennai"
Abhay asked worried
"Actually it's her grandmother's wish to see her married as early as possible. The lady feels that she has very few days left to live. And Mr. Ramakrishan is unable to say no to his mother. So he has asked her not to leave Chennai before she gets married"
Adarsh explained
"But he won't get her married to you"
Abhay said
"Then do one thing Bhaiya, go to Chennai and run away with Swadheenta"
Simmi suggested
"Are you mad Simmi ? Mom will throw all of us out of the house if that happens"
Abhay warned his wife.
"No, Simmi is right. I will go to Chennai."
Adarsh said thoughtfully
Simmi and Abhay could not believe their ears.
"What ?"
Both of them said in unison
