CHAPTER 17 - Trapped
"Adarsh, do you know that Dad has applied for voluntary retirement ?"
Jaidev asked his brother as he was driving them to Delhi. He had arrived in the morning and was surprised to find Adarsh with a broken nose. Seeing that he insisted on them leaving for Delhi that day itself so that Adarsh could get better medical attention. Adarsh and Swadheenta did not want to go because they had planned to meet Roshan's family and discuss the case, but Jaidev would not listen. They had to agree reluctantly.
"No Bhai, that is news to me. But we should have seen this coming. Staying in this job he would not have been able to fulfill his political ambitions."
Adarsh said
"What are you saying.? Dad is planning to join politics?"
Jaidev was surprised
"Well, he did not say it directly but Mom was talking to Haider mamu about campaigning for Dad. But I am surprised how could you be unaware of this. Dad always shared everything with you"
Adarsh was confused
"Yeah, I am surprised too, maybe because he doesn't want to involve me in this. I don't know. But why politics all of a sudden?"
Jaidev wondered
"Even I can't figure that out. However one thing is for sure that Mom has got a big hand in this."
Adarsh said thoughtfully.
"I think we should talk to Dad about it. Enough of keeping us in the dark"
Jaidev declared
Swadheenta was quiet all this while, listening to the conversation. Finally she opened her mouth,
"I think that we should not do anything in a hurry. Also, Dad is not keeping well these days. He is already worried about the judicial enquiry . We should not do something that makes him more tensed. I mean we should not confront him directly about his political ambitions right now."
"I guess you are right but we can talk to Mom"
Jaidev said
"We can talk to her but don't expect a direct answer from her. I think it is better to wait and see"
Adarsh said dismissing the proposal
Adarsh was taken to the hospital for getting a plaster on. After that they went home. Suhasini and Manohar both chided him for acting so impulsively. Jaidev took leave that day itself as he had left behind lot of important work.
In the evening Swadheenta decided to share her findings about the Kasauli case with Suhasini. She did not find her in her room or study. She looked around the house and saw her in the lawn, playing with baby Amana. Swadheenta smiled looking at them. The child had become Suhasini's life. When she was with the baby, the frowns on her forehead would automatically vanish.
Swadheenta approached them and called her mother in law. Suhasini turned to her and smiled. She understood that Swadheenta had something important to talk about.
"Mom, We talked to Roshan. He told us everything about that incident. The minister's son has fooled them. I think he killed the child intentionally"
Swadheenta said as she watched Suhasini throw the baby up in the air and catching it back. The baby was finding it fun and laughed everytime she did that
"Hmm.. So do you think you have a case here? "
Suhasini asked
"We don't have any Prima facie evidence as such of the crime because the body of the child was never found. But we have the witnesses. His family and the villagers, everyone saw him taking the child towards the woods. Also the police has not taken the FIR but a general diary had been registered. I think we can get a copy of that. That would be enough to take it to the court I suppose"
Swadheenta explained
"So you think they are telling the truth. You have to keep it in mind that you don't have a very strong case here"
Suhasini pointed out
"I can see that. But I cannot back out once I have promised to help them get justice."
Swadheenta determined
"Are you sure ? Even if I ask you to do so ?"
Suhasini suddenly threw her off balance
"What are you saying Mom? You don't want me to take up this case? It was you who sent us there..
Swadheenta said incredulously
" I know that. I am talking of a hypothetical scenario. What would you do if I ask you to give up this case?"
Suhasini looked as if she was trying to test her protege
"You know me well enough to know my answer."
Swadheenta said with a determined smile
" Fine. For the time being I would advise you not to disclose the matter to anyone before it goes to the court. Instruct Roshan and his family to do so too."
Saying that she again threw the baby up in the air
"But tell me one thing, how would this case help in the aquital of Dad?"
Swadheenta asked still unsure of her mother in law's intentions
"Have some patience dear, you will soon get the answer. You just do what you think is right."
Suhasini now handed the baby to Swadheenta
"Who do you think she looks like? Abhay or Simmi?
Suhasini asked
"I don't know Mom, I guess a mixture of both"
Swadheenta was really clueless
Suhasini laughed. Then said,
"Take her to Simmi, she must have come back."
Suhasini was talking to someone over the phone when Manohar entered
"Yes Justice Sengupta, I can totally understand... You don't have to worry about that... Oh no, please don't say that. ...It was my duty to help you at that time...Yes, these are difficult times...we are grateful to have friends like you. Please do your duty...Thank you."
"Were you talking to Justice Sengupta? I did not know you knew him too"
Manohar asked in disbelief. Justice Sengupta was the person heading the enquiry committee of the Delhi blasts.
"Don't be so surprised. You know I like maintaining good terms with all my colleagues. They can be of good help at times of need"
Suhasini said with a smile
"But you must remember you have a few foes too. And one of them is also a part of the committee. Yes, I am talking of Justice Mehta. Just because he could not win a single case against you, he hates you with a vengeance. Everyone in the legal circles knows that"
Manohar was worried
"Do you think he will be able to be successful this time around ?"
Suhasini asked looking at her husband.
Manohar was surprised to find not even an iota of tension on her face. Instead there was a mischievous twinkle. What game was she playing?
Adarsh had been wondering about everything that has been happening around him these days. He was a very borderline spectator in the proceedings with nothing much to do. The more he thought, the more it confused him. He could not put two and two together. Dad wanted to get into politics. Mom wanted him to be acquitted of all the charges. She also wanted Swadheenta to fight a case against minister Choudhary's son. But what goal would that serve, except getting revenge unless... Wait.
"Swadheenta, didn't Mom ask you if you would give up the case?"
He asked Swadheenta as she entered the room
"Yes, but she knows I would never do that even if she asks me to"
Swadheenta said
"But she also wants you to break out from the partnership in the firm"
Yes, I once had a doubt about that.
"I think she will ask you to either leave the case or the firm"
Adarsh said
"What? But what makes you think that? ...wait, do you think she is going to negotiate with the minister ?"
Swadheenta got the hint
"Yes, she is going to ask the minister to take all the charges against Dad upon himself, in return you will drop the case against his son"
Adarsh could see the plan in front of his eyes
"But that is not going to happen. I won't back out now"
Swadheenta said
"Exactly, and even though the case is weak, you are not going to leave a single stone unturned...And then Minister Chaudhry will be left with only one option..."
Adarsh knew Swadheenta would understand the rest of it
"Oh no, that can't be possible. She can't do that"
Swadheenta was so shocked that she dropped on the couch
"She will, just wait and watch...She has trapped everyone in her web so well that it is going to be really difficult to come out.
Adarsh could not believe he was saying this about his mother
