If you see movies we see men with problems, but problems pertaining to the outside world and in the TV world we see woman with problems pertaining to their homes, their relations. My question has always been doesn't the reverse happen. Don't woman face issues in public life and don't men face issues in their relations. Movies have changed where they have started showing women in public life, their problems. But TV. TV mostly have arm candy men who are mute spectators to what is happening in their homes, or tied either to their mother's apron or their wife's pallu. Just like many leading ladies are available for romance in movies, men fill that role in TV. To romance, to have suhaag raat and well then move to oblivion. Rest everything women will take care.
The 3 characters I mentioned above are different. They were men with crosses. Their cross differed, but it is the fact that the cross existed.
If Sooraj's cross was between the traditional views of his mother and the ambition of his wife, Dev's cross was between the honor of his family and the honor of his friend's/lover's family. Adarsh's cross I would say the hardest between his brother and his killer who is part of his wife's extended family.
And see their names Sooraj meaning Sun. What is the quality of Sun. He is a giver. He gives light, never expects anything in return. And he nurtures a withered a sapling which is actually his wife
Dev- God. On whom you have blind faith. Can God commit mistake. Yes this man commits and then it is his walk of redemption to become once again God in the eyes of his loved one.
Adarsh- Principles. He is a human with certain values. And his values never change. His values are his strength and his weakness also.
Coming to Sooraj Rathi. A simple man who is forced to stop his studies at the age of 14 to support his family a task which he does happily. A man who doesn't have any big dreams for himself and worships his mother. He marries a woman whom his mother chooses. But then everything changes. The lie her brother told to get rid of his sister through marriage so that he can go to US changes this young man's world upside down. Instead of a 7th pass girl who he gets is a graduate girl with ambition to become IPS officer. A woman on their first night blast him telling take her body because that is what a woman is for. Without knowing the reason for her outburst he sees a withered plant unwilling to accept him as husband, let alone consider him a friend. And just like he had nurtured everyone in his family he nurtures her, when his mother throws her out when she knows her brother had lied about her education for the first time he stands against his mother and tells she is his wife she will not go anywhere. Then at every point he stands as her shield supporting her. He brings her to the dream which she had given up. He fights against his mother, the society to give his wife's ambition a chance. He even gives up his conjugal life for her dream when he understands the girl is not prepared to take the relation to the next level. I will never forget the dialogues he give in the ghat that her dream has become his dream now and the matka he gives his mother as an assurance of his trust towards her. Against opposition he carries Sandhya to her dream. And what differentiates him from Dev and Adarsh. His lack of formal education but his high thoughts while Dev and Adarsh are well educated guys of present times. And Sandhya if you ask me she was a typical sanskaari bahu. Ever sacrificing . A woman without an identity. It is he who creates her identity. But then the reason for me leaving the show was post IPS they made Sooraj the most inspirational character of DABH an army candy and tried to project an identity less Sandhya as inspirational. DABH belonged to Sooraj Rathi and his thoughts. He was the fresh change in the Indian TV scenario on how a man should be. Emphathic and emotional, yet have good common sense.
Coming to Dev Goenka. I would say the most underrated character because the story focused on Durga's revenge on Shaurya. But would Durga have extracted her revenge or got justice for her sister without his unconditional love for Nithya. I would say impossible. A man at one point when faced with an option of supporting his friend Nithya or supporting his family trusts his family above his friend as he was not in India when the incident happened. And when he realizes his mistake it is far too late in the business as his friend Nithya is presumed dead.
He comes, comes back with the faith that his Nithya is alive. He will find her. Was his faith true. Yes physically Nithya was alive, but Dev's Nithya, the carefree, happy go lucky girl who loved everything and everyone around, who only saw colors was gone. Denied justice for the rape of her sister by Dev's cousin brother Shaurya and escaping a murder attempt she had come back as Durga a woman without a soul or rather a scarred soul. Her face changed through plastic surgery this lady uses everyone and everything for meeting her ends that is to punish Shaurya Goenka. Scheming, manipulating Durga Thakur doesn't heed to her emotions. She is a woman of proof and proof alone. She sees things in black. Everything and everyone is black for her. Where Nithya used to see white in everything, this lady sees black and her first instinct is to safeguard herself.
Once again Dev and Durga'a path clashes. Durga sees the man whom she had trusted blindly and according to her how he betrayed her trust. Dev suspects Durga as a woman who has know how of Nithya but unwilling to give him. He runs around trying to collect proofs because it shows on record Payal the rape victim has changed statement telling she was not raped. Coming across half opened doors, which closes one after another he is given a choice no rather a deal by Durga's father. Marry Durga and on Nithya's b'day you will see Nithya. Nithya whom Dev had loved, but never confessed walks the path to marry Durga leaving his love with no proof of existence of Nithya only the word of Dayal Thakur and his own analysis of how Durga was treating Payal like her sister because he believes if this is what his friend wants to trust him again so be it. He will grant her the wish. If she doesn't love him fine but he will not allow her to deny their friendship. I will say that is the point where Durga's soul restoration process starts. She sees the blind deliverance of Nithya's trust on Dev. Married to him, she sees his pain everyday longing to see Nithya. He shouts at her, fights with her. But she doesn't care. She tolerates. Many have told Durga has become a suffering wife. My thoughts were different. She knew why he was behaving the way he was. She knew what he had given up for Nithya's sake. If she just reveals her identity he will walk her like a queen. But she needed her fake identity to get justice and she also needed that identity to ensure she is not carried away by emotions which can detract her from her goal. But finally she had to relent, relent in giving him a letter from Nithya which asks him to treat Durga as his friend. And it is Nithya's voice, the voice which she had crushed inside her, whose existence she had associated with failure gives her the victory. When Dev is arrested Nithya's letter makes him call Durga first and for the first time Sakshi Goenka knows what she is getting into. Durga brings out Dev and in the process takes power from Sakshi Goenka from all sides. And in the same process Dev also realizes who his wife actually is and decides to keep mum about it allowing her to reveal it herself. He steps back to give her space. I had always loved the mind dialogue of Dev with Durga when he realizes who she is. She asks him to go away because she is not his Nithya. She is shadow of Nithya. There are no colors to her, there is no life to her and it is better he stays away from her. And he says he loves Durga. He knows why she is the way she is. He loves her this way too. The manipulations, her scheming she had done for a purpose to get justice, and he knows she will do it again and he has no qualms. I had felt even if Dev had spoken to her at that point she would have told the same thing. At the end Nithya does stand in front of Dev who also has Durga in her. And if Nithya happens it is because he was willing to suffer to take the poison the system has given her. And she asks him to call her Durga not Nithya, because she feels secure in that name as him calling her Durga is his acceptance of her new personality.
Last but not least Adarsh Sinha. I simply adore this man. I guess I have covered a lot in my analysis about him. But if you see Adarsh-Swa are one of the most balanced couple in teleworld. If Sooraj take reins in Sooraj-Sandhya relation, if Durga take reins in Durga-Dev relation, the relation of Adarsh and Swadeenta is balanced. Adarsh is an individual who is talented, who has reached a position on his effort. He loves a woman. He walks the extra mile to please her father. He marries her and then is faced with the brutal truth of his brother's death and the accused one is her brother. His wife stays in his home and fights the battle for her brother. This man is confused. But even then he doesn't allow anyone else to insult her. He shouts at her, he insults her when someone else is trying to shout at her. In public he stands and shouts at the people who tries to throw stones at her. A woman who is following a path that is different from his , in her search of truth he still stands as a protective cover for her.
And Swa she doesn't expect anything from her husband. She understands his trauma of losing his brother. When he comes, when he apologizes she accepts him. Knowing him understanding him. Both of them are humane with their own faults, but then both of them have a binding that is very mature. And if you ask me we need more Swadarsh in television. If not atleast we need more of Sooraj, Dev and Adarsh in television. Enough of angry young men and doormat women
