Jaidev, please, meri baat toh suniye
He had walked out of their room, yet again. She was surprised that it still hurt her. She should have gotten used to it by now. It had been 4 years since their wedding. "Wedding". The word had developed a new meaning in her life. What dreams she ha sewn for her life. All of it shattered over and over again.
Flashback
Jaya and Jaidev had been in the same graduation school together. Being a shy girl, Jaya was not one to interact with a lot of people, let alone boys. She almost came across as a rude girl owing to her family's wealthy background. Her best friend Isha had been the opposite though. She was the most talkative and friendly person on the campus. People who knew the both of them always teased that Isha spoke for the both of them, Jaya and herself. This was not the only thing different in between them. Jaya always believed in simple dreams, dreams that were within her reach. While Isha dreamt big. She hoped that she could become a bollywood actress one day, and did everything in her power to accomplish this dream, like taking acting classes, make up classes, dancing classes etc.
While in their second year, Isha's play had been selected for a performance at a school in a neighboring town. Isha had insisted that Jaya travel along with her, and knowing their fondness for each other, the college had obliged. It was during this trip that Jaya met Jaidev. She could not believe that he had been in the same college for over an year and had gone unnoticed by her. Apparently, the boys thinking of her as a snob, had challenged Jaidev to make conversation with her for 5 minutes. When he approached her, she was hesitant and shy. But he explained the reason for his action, and she couldn't help but smile. While she continued talking to him to help him win his challenge, Isha had walked up and scared the crap out of Jaidev. She gave him an earful for approaching girls in this manner, and he almost got suspended. She always felt the need to protect Jaya knowing her nature, and assumed the worse when she saw Jaidev with her. When Jaya had later explained the entire scenario to Isha, Isha had quickly apologized to Jaidev and had cleared up his name in the mess. That led to a new bond and a new friendship between the 3 of them.
The 3 of them hung out together with a few other friends as often as they could. With time, Jaya developed a special fondness for Jaidev. She had not realized that it was love until her heart broke into a million pieces when Jaidev confessed to her of his love for Isha. As upset as she was, she was very happy for her 2 friends who seemed to reciprocate each other's feelings.
Jaidev lived here in a hostel and his family was back in Delhi. When they all became friends, Jaidev had introduced both Isha and Jaya to his family over phone. His parents had professions that kept them very busy, and they had not personally visited Jaidev at school. With his mother's 45th birthday fast approaching, and her desire to see him married, Jaidev had decided to surprise them with his wedding at the end of his 3rd year in college. He had of-course told his parents that he intended to get married, and that the girl was one of his classmates, but he intended to surprise them with the fact that it was Isha. At the end of their 3rd year, immediately after their graduation, all preparations had started for a grand wedding. Jaya has been staying at Isha's house to help with the wedding preparations. The night before Jaidev's parents were set to arrive, Isha walked in to Jaya's room in a mode of panic. She had suddenly realized that she did not want this wedding, and that her dreams were to become an actress. She had just enjoyed all the attention that Jaidev was bestowing on her, but could not go ahead with it anymore. Jaya tried to reason with her for a bit, but knew that it was of no use. She had always known of Isha's love for acting and attention, and that it had been unnatural for her to accept Jaidev's proposal. Jaya had believed that Isha was smitten by love, but apparently it was just selfishness. She told her as much, and that she was really ashamed that her best friend could play with someone's life like this. Isha who had known of Jaya's fascination for Jaidev suggested that she marry him instead. Jaya opposed Isha initially, and they continued to argue and discuss about it.
Jaidev was getting restless and wanted to meet Isha. It was his wedding afterall, and all his friends had latched on to him without letting him even breathe for a minute by himself. He sneaked out of the house late at night to just meet her once. As he reached her house and was just about to enter her room through her window he heard something that made him freeze. Jaya was talking to Isha
Tum yaha se chali jaaoo. Mein Jaidev se shaadi kar leti hu. Woh thoda naraaz hoga, aur upset bhi. Lekin mein toh pyaar karthi hu usse. Mein manage kar loongi. Tum jaaoo.
Jaidev was too shocked with what he heard to react to it. As he tried to move, he tripped over a pot and the noise awoke people in the house. Out of sheer shock and a need to get a grip on things, he ran away before anyone could spot him.
The entire set of events there on seemed like a nightmare to him, one that he could not wake up from. Having run away from there, Jaidev had spend the rest of the night in an open field, just sitting in sheer shock. Jaya, his friend Jaya loved him? And for the sake of her love, she had convinced Isha to run away? He had to stop them. He could not let this happen. He ran to Isha's house to stop her from doing anything stupid. When he reached there, he was shocked to see his parents. His parents intended to return the surprise he sprung on them by showing up a few hours earlier than anticipated. Isha's parents having realized that she had run away from home had introduced Jaya as the intended bride to his parents. His parents loved Jaya, and he couldnt do anything to stop it. He had tried to tell them through many ways that he loved Isha, but Jaya's proclamation of her love for him in front of their families had been the final blow. They had gotten married the following day, at the same mantap and muhurat where he had intended to marry Isha.
End of Flashback
Jaya had tried her best to make her marriage work. To the world, they were lovers who had married each other out of love. But she knew the nightmare that her life had become.
Jaidev had traveled to Mumbai the following day to meet a client for his father. He was a middle aged man and looked to be around 40 years of age. It came as a rude shock to him to see Isha as that man's wife. Jaidev was infuriated by Jaya's actions more than ever. In his mind, he continued to blame her for the havoc she created in their lives. When he got a few minutes alone with Isha when her husband was on a call, he apologize to her for everything that had gone wrong. Isha who was surprised with his apology realized that there was some misunderstanding in all of this. When she heard jaidev's version of the story, she could not help by cry at her friend's stupidity and sacrifice. Having no strength to bare it anymore, she told Jaidev the true version of the entire story.
The flight from Mumbai to Delhi has been the longest flight of his life. He kept remembering his conversation with Isha and couldn't believe it. Because of his own assumptions and interpretations of events, he had lost 4 beautiful years of his life. 4 years that he could have enjoyed with the girl who sacrificed everything for the 2 people that she cared the most. He hadn't even thought it important to ask her for clarifications, and had punished her for no fault of hers. Not anymore. He would make sure that every single day hereafter would be the best in her life.
As soon as the flight landed, he got into a taxi to reach home. As expected, everyone else had gone to bed. Only Jaya was waiting for him, his wife Jaya. Today, the word wife had a different ring to it. He liked it.
The minute she noticed him, she quickly reached the door to pick his bag. Aap aa gaye? Flight mein khana kha liya, ya mein laga du? Thake hue lag rahe hai, mein kahna hi laga deti hu.
When she turned to move, she felt a hold on her wrist. Confused, she turned to look back and was shocked to see Jaidev holding her hand. She looked up into his eyes with a questioning gaze
He answered her unasked question with one simple action. He pulled her into a bone crushing hug, a hug to never let go.
His mother who had just come down to get herself some water noticed this and teased ek din subha se bahar kya gaye the, itna miss kiya apni wife ko? before walking away. Seldom did she know that the wait had not been for a day, but 4 long years.
