GG Women Innings

19.2 Matthews to Meghna Singh, OUT

Champions before anyone else and now, on the cusp of doing it all over again! Roaring in their den like they mean to rampage on - irresistible, irrepressible, invincible (almost), incredible and inevitable! And this glittering and glorious star cast, from Harmanpreet to Hayley, from Amanjot to Amelia, from Sciver-Brunt to Shabnim Ismail, will have a shot at etching and engraving themselves into WPL folklore, and at adding the final punctuation to another pointedly powerful season on their proud and pompous patch! This is slower, much slower in fact, and it entices Meghna into a wild swipe acorss the line. She gets nowhere close to the pitch of the ball, and nowhere close to the middle of the bat. Sciver-Brunt hurtles to her left from deep mid wicket, settles under it and does the rest. Handshakes, smiles and embraces in the MI camp. They knew what they had to do tonight, and they have accomplished that to the tee. The GG dugout is a little more sombre, which is understandable. They too knew what they needed to do, and how they probably needed to play out of their skin, but on the big night, when they required their players to stand up, they just did not turn up, which may feel more heart-breaking than the result itself!

11:02pm Another clinical and comprehensive MI win over the Gujarat Giants. It is 7-0 now, and this is perhaps the most telling of those wins, given it has ended the Gujarat dream, and catapulted the Mumbai Indians to another summit clash, against their old rivals the Delhi Capitals.

At the half-way stage, it seemed the Giants needed something special. What they got, though, was an error-strewn powerplay and three unnecessary run-outs. Gibson tried her best, as did Litchfield but neither could go on long enough to transfer any pressure back onto MI. Mooney and Gardner failed, and with Dottin missing, that proved to a pivotal point of difference.

As for MI, their bowlers stuck to their guns, with Matthews bagging three, and Amelia accounting for two batters. Sciver-Brunt and Ismail were also among the wickets, and they will be quietly confident of adding to their trophy tally when they arrive at this venue on Saturday.

Three Eliminators in three seasons and two wins now for Mumbai. Despite the heavy dew they have defended their big score easily. The wicket of Mooney in the first over helped and Matthews took out Gardner in her first over. Litchfield and Gibson then strung a partnership before it was broken. Fulmali came out and got a couple away but the asking rate was always against them and Mumbai just took wickets at the right moments to snuff out the chase. Gujarat will feel that they went too early and hard in the chase, with the amount of dew in the later half of the innings, had they waited a little longer, they could have capitalised as there were fumbles and the ball was slipping out with regularity. So Mumbai keep their unbeaten record against Gujarat going and move to the final to face Delhi. Stay tuned for the post-match stuff...
