India captain Rohit Sharma and his Bangladesh counterpart Najmul Hossain Shanto

Two years after making their international debut in the ODI format, Bangladesh faced India for the first time in October 1988 in the Asia Cup at home. The two Asian countries have since faced each other 41 times in the format, with India holding an overwhelming 32-8 advantage. Such was India's dominance over Bangladesh; they secured a 12-match winning streak across 16 years before the latter secured their first-ever victory in a home series.

However, of the eight total wins Bangladesh secured against India, three came in their last five meetings, including a 2-1 series win at home and a six-run victory in the Super Four clash at the 2023 Asia Cup. India had the last laugh in the 2023 ODI World Cup, beating the Tigers by seven wickets in Pune.

It's Champions Trophy time for India! This is a tournament where they have done really well in the past. There have been 8 editions of this comp since its inception in 1998 and India have been in the final four times. Winners in 2013, joint-winners in 2002 and finalists in 2000 and 2017. And they are coming into this edition with the squad in good stead, understanding conditions, defining roles and potentially with a couple of solid combinations that could take them far again.

A lot of eyebrows were raised when they packed their squad with spinners. Why do you need so many spin options was a constant ring in the ears. And they further intrigued everyone by adding a fifth spinner in Varun Chakaravarthy replacing a batter. They have their games in Dubai and Dubai isn't a venue that offers a great degree of turn like it does in India. It may play slow but it keeps all facets in play. Dew is a key factor here in the night. Toss played a big role in the 2021 T20 World Cup and even in the IPL games here as well. So will the dew not negate the spin-factor, thereby causing a big dent to India's hopes?

For starters, this tournament is happening in a different window to the T20 WC and the IPL. More importantly, matches start 1PM local time, which means the second innings is scheduled to begin at 5PM. Generally dew tends to set in around 7.30-8PM and even if it does set in it may not be very heavy like it was in the Sept-Oct-Nov window. One more key point is that the stats for spin here may need a long thought because day-night games at this venue generally start at 2.30PM local time, which is significantly behind the scheduled start for this comp. So it is a smart move to load the side with spin? Only time will tell but they do have a sound logic behind the thought.

Mustafa Moudi: "Fun Fact: Rohit Sharma is just 12 Runs away from Completing 11,000 ODI Runs. If reaches there today, he would be the 2nd Fastest to Reach the Milestone in terms of No. of innings, after his Teammate Kohli, who reached there in merely 222 Innings. Also, all the Top 3 Fastest to the Feat would be Indians - Virat Kohli (222), Rohit Sharma (260*) and Sachin Tendulkar (276) !!"

Rohit Sharma is not going to change his approach of taking on the bowlers in the powerplay. How straightforward will it be though here in Dubai compared to the ones in India? Shubman Gill has taken to this format like duck to water. Virat Kohli loves a hard grind. Shreyas used his smarts and even showed glimpses of his work behind the scenes towards the short ball. KL knows to step it up when the team needs. Axar, Hardik and Jadeja add great solidity down the order. Arshdeep covers up for Bumrah. Shami is only a few overs away from getting back his full flow. Harshit's middle-overs breakthroughs have been a game-changer and the spin of Kuldeep, Varun is always a pain for the opposition. This looks like a well-oiled machine. It will all be down to how the batters adapt if the ball doesn't come on as expected and how the spinners respond if the ball gets wet.
