The Super Six phase of this ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup has given us some nail-biting clashes to witness and the action continues with Match 8 where West Indies Under-19 will fight against Australia Under-19 at Diamond Oval, Kimberley. Both teams are on the winning momentum and both of these cricketing giants carry some luck up their sleeves as well. West Indies Under-19 got under the cosh in the game against Sri Lanka Under-19 as they dramatically collapsed in the last ten overs of the run chase.
The skipper Stephan Pascal with his 33 and his opening partner Steve Wedderburn's immaculate 67 provided a fantastic start along with Jordan Johnson's 39. Still, West Indies' middle order tumbled a bit against the Lankan spin web. But Nathan Sealy and Tarrique Edward eventually sailed them through the winning line, negotiating the spin maturely, with just three balls remaining. Raneico Smith shined with his excellent 4-fer and the others picked one scalp a piece. They currently stand in the third position on the Points Table in Group 2 of the Super Six. Coming to one of the dominating teams of this competition, the anticipation was too high for the mini Ashes but, Australia Under-19 too, had some fortunes favouring them as rain played some role in their win, but overall, it was their all-round dominance which eventually held them to the win.
They posted 266 on the board and were helped by their skipper Hugh Weibgen's scintillating 120 along with Harry Dixon's 53. Their middle order too, contributed some valuable runs. Coming to defend their score against England Under-19, rain played the spoilsport and the match was reduced to 24 overs and the DLS target was 215. With the situation favouring the Aussies after the rain, they didn't let any English batters settle and tightened the screws. Callum Vidler was the pick of the bowlers with his excellent 4-fer and he was complimented well by his bowling mates Rafael Macmillan and Tom Straker who picked three and two wickets respectively.
They bundled out England Under-19 on a mere score of 104 and won the mini Ashes by 114 runs, stepping one more step ahead in the journey to the semis and currently top Group 2 of the Super Six. Australia Under-19 hold a fantastic winning streak at this venue, winning all four matches they have played here, and that too, with considerable margins.
But, West Indies Under-19 are no less than fighters. Well, they can take the motivation from their seniors who narrowly defeated Australia in the Brisbane Test on their home soil and injected the fighting spirit among the young guns. This exciting clash promises to provide some nail-biting moments as well. Whom are you supporting?
