Chapter 4 (for my friend Aisha )
"Time to rise and shine!" Kapil announced way too loudly in Sumona's ear,who was sleeping soundly. She woke up with a start,and then groaned,spread out her arms and legs,meaning to hit the person who disturbed her sleep. But kapil ducked back just in time. She groaned again and then opened her eyes,to see kapil grinning at her,saying "U have got to try harder than that,Sums!" Her eyes narrowing to slits she said -
"You.better.have.a.good.reason.to.wake.me.up.at.this.ghostly.hour!" Kapil met her gaze with his own timid,scared one. 'Im sorry! Everyone else was sleeping' Kapil replied.
'And I was not?' She asked. "No u were..but I know u will forgive me quickly..the rest,preeti,Ginni,Ali bhai and others..they would have murdered me. U are the sweetest." He replied wid a devastating grin. Sumona sighed. She could not remain mad at him for too long. Mesmerising eyes,voice and personality ensured that."How the hell did u enter my bedroom,btw? It's creepy!!" She asked. He laughed. 'Oh,that's easy. I have kept spare keys of all rooms so I can trouble u all conveniently." He finished. She gave him a look. 'Should hv known u had an ulterior motive when u booked those rooms for us.' He just smiled,and offered her a hand to help her off the bed. She accepted and got off the bed.'Last question. It's 4:30 a.m,how come YOU are not sleepy?' He said "How can u expect me to sleep when I'm in my hometown..I'm too excited to even sit still.."
Her eyes twinkled with amusement. He noticed, and cudnt help staring at her with awe..the way she looked,her eyes dancing...without thinking,he reached out and crushed her into his arms,holding her tightly. Sumona was surprised,but she hugged him back. When he pulled back and gazed at her,she gave him an enquiring look. He actually had no explanation. So he just said,still holding her upper arms " Let's get going..I'm hungry..breakfast will be downstairs.Get ready,I will wait here for u."At that precise moment,there was a knock on the door. "Who is it?" They both asked. "It's me!..kapil,are u in there?" Ginni's voice came in. Kapil immediately released sumona and ran to open the door. There she was,all dressed up and pretty. Sumona looked at herself. She still had the just out of bed look..suddenly,she started feeling self conscious. And more so when kapil said to ginni "Wow..u look lovely. Pehle batati ki itni acchi dikhne wali ho to main iske badle tumhe hi jagata." He was just teasing,of course. Ginni laughed. But sumona was a bit hurt. Had he really woken her up as a replacement of ginni? Was she a liability? She didn't want to show anything to him..so she hurriedly told them that she was going to get ready,and dashed towards the washroom,telling them to go ahead,and that she wud join them downstairs at breakfast.
Kapil was confused. Ginni gave him a look of sympathy,and said "Let's go downstairs,kapil..if u eat u will be reenergised." He grinned at that,and said "That's what punjabis are for...eating! And making their friends feel better. Let's go." She laughed.He opened the door for her,and they went in the hotel restaurant for breakfast,where all the others were already present. They sat at their table and kapil said to them"Don't order just yet..I have a surprise for u all today. Let sumona come too." They all groaned. "Kapil!! It's criminal to keep us away from food.Especially when we are sooo hungry!!" U suck!" Ginni,preeti,Ali,kiku,chandan,upasna Singh said in unison. Kapil grinned. "I know. But trust me. This will be worth it." They all sighed.
"It better be. Otherwise I will make sure that I kill u personally." Preeti told him,glaring. He just laughed. "Kash mujhe pehle pata hota ki mere creative team mei ek killer hai.." He said,pretending to be scared. The group shook with laughter. Sumona then joined all of them at their table. She looked stunning and how..a white dress that landed just below her knees,with a cool belt at the waist..it brought out all of the beauty inside her. She had outdone herself to look good. Especially after this morning..
Kapil was staring at her with his mouth hung open. He couldn't take his eyes off her. He just cudnt,no matter how hard he tried. It was like he was drinking in all of her. Sumona caught him staring,and blushed under his intense gaze. She had dressed up more for her own sake than his,to feel good..but it was really satisfying to see his reaction,she laughed and thought to herself. Suddenly,Ali leaned over and said in kapil's ear "Muh band kar...macchar ghus jayega!!" Chandan heard this and started shaking with quite laughter. Kapil closed his mouth and glared at Ali and chandan,giving them a look that said "shut up". Sumona sat down. They all filled her in that kapil was going to give them a surprise,and then he said "Today,we will visit the golden temple. And have breakfast at the langar which will be served there. Trust me,that food is divine and incomparable." All of them were excited at this unique idea. But chandan teasingly said "Saab ji,main to mazak mei kehta tha ki aap paise bachane ke liye langar mei Khana khate ho..aur aap sach mei...?" Everyone laughed,and chandan earned a blow on the head from kapil at that,which was followed by an 'ouch!'.
They all piled into a luxurious hired car and reached the golden temple. The sight in front of them dazzled them. Most of them,including Sumona had been here numerous times,with govind. (Not that anyone was aware of it.) But it still knocked out their breath every time. They cud stare at it forever. Somehow,they tore themselves from the divine sight,and went inside,and took the darshan,all wishing,praying and thanking the almighty with all the devotion inside them. They then went to the area where the langar was being served by volunteers. They stood in separate queues,so all cud bring a different thing to eat at the table. Sumona was also standing in a queue,she was the last person in her queue.When her turn came,she was absently checking text messages on her phone and hurriedly recited her very long order to the volunteer in front of her. "Baap re..Abhi bhi utna hi khati ho..? That's scary." Said the volunteer. Sumona looked up with a jerk. There,standing in front of her in all his glory,was Govind. Frozen,she looked at him. Twinkling eyes,breathtaking smile,way too handsome and kind face,tall,strong and fit body. Yep,still the same. She smiled so wide that it looked like the sun had broken out from among the clouds. Without a word,she jumped into his arms with such force he was almost knocked over. He laughed and picked her up in his arms,swaying and twirling her. She looked down at him,and he smiled at her. Finally,he set her down. "Govi!! I missed u.God,I did." She said. "That I could notice,considering u almost made me fall." Govind smiled at her. She laughed. "What r u doing here? Y didn't u call me that u were in India? How come u r here 4 months earlier than planned?" She shouted questions at him. He just laughed and said "Bacchan sir ko tumne Bach kar rahna hoga..itne sawal puchti ho,unki job Khatre mei hai" And he continued while she glared at him "I came a little early as I was missing India. Came only yesterday.was gonna call u. Doing social service here,serving langar." She laughed at his tone. "Got it" she said. What neither of them noticed was the death looks that kapil sharma was throwing at them. He looked as if he was abt to burst. Grimly,he made his way over to where they stood. Behind him,chandan and Ali shared a look. In all these years,they had never seen that look on kapil's face. Something was abt to explode,and very soon.
