@ DK, did ACP said so ? 😲
O'lala, I really didn't expect the episode to be this good. The plot by Ajay Kumar was pretty good (the machine/blueprint idea reminded me a bit of our Story Contest 3 actually) and the direction by Siba Mishra was even better – there was almost tangible suspense and tension throughout the proceedings. I've always said that a quality union of both is required to lift up an episode to the peaks of glory, and that seems to have largely come true when they applied it here. 😃 They seem to be very good at episodes set in limited spaces, like Aakhri Chunauti-VIII. This one was similar to that one in quite a few respects – no investigations, no forensic scenes, no exotic locales, no chases. One crumbling building where hero and villain alike fight for their goals – to seek what they want (the scientist in case of our team, and the blueprints for the villains), and escape alive before the jaws of death collapse upon them (literally!).
While the psychological edge isn't as apparent as in case of AC-VIII, it's still there – just look at the scenes where Sachin and Kajal are being asphyxiated in the closed chamber and hear approaching footsteps; they don't know whether it is friend or foe approaching. Loved how Sachin and Daya signal each other about their identity using the measured raps. The stunts and visual effects were apt and actually added to the thrill of the plot rather than serving the sole purpose of being eye-candy, liked I feared the series could be. Speaking of them, major kudos to the cameraman and art director – even with a limited budget, they managed to make the scenes of the collapsing building look so realistic and frightening. The darkness and dingy lighting made it all even creepier and more terrifying. It had the chilling aura of a Hollywood thriller in parts. The technical team was at their best here. This is it, this is the intelligent direction that I have always loved it in CID and it's back, man, IT'S BACK! 😎
Jab plot aur direction dono hi acche ho, toh humari team ki performances are like icing on the cake, as always! 😃 Daya sir – what a brilliant performance. From climbing up the girders into the building, to leading Vivek with all the care and concern of a senior through the dim wreckage of the building, to rescuing Sachin, Kajal and the scientist and bashing the living daylights out of the crooks in the climax, he was amazing throughout the episode. ACP sir was in just the form I love to see him in – no unnecessary shouting, no panicking but not calm either; he was aptly and effectively monitoring the situation through the entire ordeal. 😊 Loved his quiet, furious threat to the somersault guy during the climax. Abhi sir rocked in the final fight scene as well, though I wish he entered the building earlier than that.
Vivek was another shining star – superb stunts and like Daya sir, great dialogue delivery during their search in the building – this is vital because expressions are not readily noticeable in dark settings like this. Major props to Sachin and Kajal – their elevator rope climbing scene was cool and the suffocation scene looked so natural and realistic, you could almost feel for them. Kudos to them all – shooting with collapsing rubble and pillars is incredibly hard and risky. Fredericks' turn to be invisible today, sadly. Good to see Dr. Salunkhe there, though, despite there being no forensic scenes. I initially thought that somersault ji (the famous villain) was doing a non-villainous role for a change, but he sure loves his wicked roles, doesn't he? 😆 The actors playing the goondas could've been better though, and Payal ji was unimpressive again. The scientist performed well though; nice to see a sane, responsible one in CID finally, BTW! I was getting really annoyed by their depiction as psychotic killers in recent episodes. 😛
So, this was a rare instance where we had two cool episodes a week. This one was definitely better, and by far my favourite episode of 2011 so far. It wasn't perfect, but the positives far outweigh negatives I think. I'm even willing to overlook the Surya promotion at the end, I guess. So, well done, FW! Credit is due where due. I enjoyed the episode and my hopes for a bright future have been rekindled; this "Eid ka chaand" streak of glory is what I seek! Will remain cautiously optimistic for the rest of the Dhoom series now. Chak de, CID! 😃
(Whew, feels weird to be writing a proper episode review after such a long time! 😆 )
