Himmatwala Movie Review

himmatawalareviewHimmatwala is an official remake of the 1983 release which had Jeetendra and Sridevi in the leading roles. Directed by Sajid Khan, this version stars Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah. The original, with the exception of the soundtrack, it should be asserted that the 1983 Himmatwala is by no means a classic and it contains a number of imperfections that make it a very average film overall. This remake has been updated for the new generation of cinemagoers, with the screenplay also being edited with new twists and thrills. Despite the remake containing many holes, it is still a modestly enjoyable film that will not disappoint you. Surprisingly, all together this latest version by Sajid Khan is stronger than the original Himmatwala.

The story is based on Ravi (Ajay Devgn), who returns to Ramnagar village after many years, where he reunites with his mother Savitri (Zarina Wahab) and sister Padma (Leena Jumani). Ravi is determined to eliminate the bad reputation his father acquired many years ago after being defamed by the vindictive Sher Singh Bandookwala (Mahesh Manjrekar). Rekha (Tamannaah), who is Sher Singh's daughter, is a spoilt brat who harasses people within the village. Ravi sets Rekha straight following a major incident and this ultimately results in her falling in love with him. Together, they work to teach Sher Singh a lesson and mend his ways for good. This is in addition to the twists and turns which occur as the film progresses.

Himmatwala has some silly and awkward moments which just make you want to cringe. This includes the comical re-enactment of the famous shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960). Yet that spice of entertainment is apparent in the film, which makes it a decent experience. It is a pure masala film that contains a little of everything; which includes action, romance, comedy and drama. Hence, if you enjoyed films like Dabangg (2010), then Himmatwala is certainly for you. Though some of the action sequences are far from perfect, it has been filmed very well and praise is due for the cinematography by Manoj Soni. The dramatic elements in the film have been well made and to some extent; they are stronger than the comedic elements. Sajid Khan should have corrected some of the blemishes that are visible in Himmatwala, which could have resulted in the film having a greater impact on us the viewers. Though it is a modestly entertaining film, whether it is re-watch material is indeed debatable.

himmatwalareview2Ajay Devgn provides a convincing and respectable performance as the male protagonist and was therefore the perfect choice to headline this film. He was far more entertaining to watch in Himmatwala compared to his last film Son of Sardaar (2012), which was a pure and utter dud. The film also has South Indian actress Tamannaah making her Bollywood debut as the female lead. However, she delivers a disappointing performance and was there largely as decoration. Sridevi played the role of Rekha far better compared to Tamaannah. She is a very beautiful woman and certainly has potential to go far within the film industry. Yet she made a bad decision in choosing this film as her official Bollywood debut. Zareena Wahab, Leena Jumani and Mahesh Manjrekar were good in their supporting roles, but by no means amazing. The person who steals the film is Paresh Rawal as Sher Singh's sidekick Narayandas. He was a delight to watch and makes you laugh out loud in a number of scenes. Paresh Rawal played this character far better than Kader Khan in the original Himmatwala. He gave his character the precise detail that was needed in order to provide a winning performance.

One thing Sajid Khan and the producers of this remake did not manage to transfer successfully from the original Himmatwala is the soundtrack. Music duo Sajid-Wajid has recreated the classic songs 'Nainon Mein Sapna' and 'Taki Taki,' which were originally composed by Bappi Lahiri. Yet they just do not have the same magic which the original versions do in terms of composition and picturization also. Moreover, there is the atrocious track 'Thank God It's Friday' where Sonakshi Sinha makes a guest appearance. This was pointlessly included in the film and could have been done without. Overall, the songs have no lasting appeal whatsoever and post-release; it is likely that they will be forgotten about.

To sum up, Himmatwala is not a perfect film, but it has that masala appeal that will certainly attract the masses rather than the classes. This film does not manage to successfully bring back the 1980s, yet there are many things about Himmatwala that make it a decent watch. Sajid Khan has not made any significant contribution to Indian cinema with this film. However, he has managed to create a film that is not a complete failure and is therefore worth a watch!

Hindi movie Himmatwala, which has been touted to be the next Rs 100 crore film of Ajay Devgn, has received a decent opening at the Indian Box Office on Friday. But its initial response is not upto the hype that it has created prior its release. Trade experts opine that despite being a solo, the Sajid Khan directed flick may not surpass the first day collection record of Ajay's last release Son Of Sardar.

Himmatwala is a remake of the 1983 action romance film of the same name, which was Blockbuster at the Box Office. It is one of the most-hyped and highly-anticipated Hindi movies of 2013. The producer has done massive promotions for it prior its release. Besides this, it is the only Hindi film that has hit the screens this Friday, which is holiday due to Good Friday.

Trade expects had predicted that Himmatwala would get a record breaking opening. But its opening response is not up to the mark. In the morning and matinee shows, the movie has registered good occupancy at single screens in mass oriented circuits like UP, Bihar, Gujarat, CP, CI and Rajasthan. Whereas it has a very poor amount of footfalls across the country.

However, Himmatwala starring Ajay Devgn and Tamanna Bhatia in leads, is expected to show a big jump in afternoon and night shows. It should be seen whether it will break the opening day record of Son Of Sardar.

Stay locked to this space to read the Box Office report on Himmatwala first day collection.

'Himmatwala' review: 'Sajid Khan commits crimes against cinema'

Director: Sajid Khan; Screenwriters: Sajid Khan; Starring: Ajay Devgn, Tamannaah, Zarina Wahab, Paresh Rawal, Mahesh Manjrekar; Running time: 150 mins; Certificate: 12A

The '80s represented the worst of Hindi cinema. Why anyone would want to revisit this era in the first instance is questionable, but to then remake a film which even in its time was dubious, seems like a deliberate act of self-sabotage. An opening sequence that includes Chunkey Pandey channelling Michael Jackson is a good indicator of the crimes against cinema that are to come.

Ravi (Ajay Devgn) returns to his ancestral village to wreak his revenge on the landowner who destroyed his family. He finds his grief-stricken mother Savitri (Zarina Wahab) and his sister destitute, and the villagers living under the harsh rule of landowner Sher Singh (Mahesh Manjrekar). When his sister is duped into marrying the odious son of Naryan Das (Paresh Rawal), with the help of Sher Singh's spoilt but reformed daughter Rekha (Tamaannah), Ravi finds a way to wreak his revenge and win justice for his family.

Sajid Khan's Himmatwala (Braveheart) is replete with the well-worn clichs that contributed to marking this era as a decade of overblown melodrama and misogyny; the long-suffering mother; the helpless sister who is preyed upon by local henchmen; a battle waged with God and an all-singing, all-dancing hero who bends steel bars with his bare hands and fights off ten men at a time.

Devgn spouts his dialogue with the cocksure confidence of a minor despot. His expressions veer between angst and delirious joyfulness, and while he is presented in a larger-than-life heroic form, be it grappling with a tiger or fighting off the villains, he falls flat, seemingly acting his scenes through gritted teeth.

The melodramatic stand-offs between mother and son that were a staple of '80s cinema, today are mawkish, and rather than having sympathy for the underdog in their plight, you are left frustrated at their willing state of martyrdom. The inclusion of a gang-rape sequence is surely ill-advised in current times, and while an effort is made to make a moral message urging modern men to be the 'himmatwala' who would fight for a woman's honour, the message is quickly diluted by the appearance of a succession of scantily-clad, hip-thrusting village belles.

Khan goes all Hitchcock on us with an ill-placed homage to Psycho in a shower sequence, while Rawal and Manjrekar are the butt of the jokes, with humour borne of cheap gags and physical comedy that is at best simplistic, at worst inane.

The only redeeming features are the fact that there is a tangible storyline and in the near-faithful recreation of the popular Sridevi-Jeetendra songs which allow for a moment of genuine nostalgic reverie. Tamannaah is reminiscent of a young Madhuri in her prime and a future in Hindi cinema for the South Indian screen queen seems assured regardless.

There are those who will be satiated by the story of the poor man's struggle against corrupt overlords and will revel in the triumphant conclusion, while Sajid Khan will undoubtedly defend his film to the hilt, issuing the caveat that it is but an 'entertainer'.

Thankfully, Hindi cinema has moved on in leaps and bounds from this. It's a period we would rather forget. Instead of being nostalgic about the regressive cinema of yore, it's surely time to leave the archaic values and misogyny of the past behind us and look towards a brighter future both for modern Hindi cinema and Indian society.

The title is fitting. You have to be a 'himmatwala' to endure this.

Hindi Film Review: 'Himmatwala'

Film: Himmatwala; Starring: Jeetendra, Sridevi...Oops, Ajay Devgan , Tamannaah, etc; Directed by Sajid Khan; Rating: **

Mar 30 (IANS): Sridevi famously said recently that her 1983 career-making potboiler "Himmatwala" was no "Mughal-e-Azam". She was right to a point...Until now, when Sajid Khan's remake of the 1983 K. Raghvendra Rao film has come along to provide a comparative viewpoint.

And suddenly the old "Himmatwala" does appear to be a classic. It gave us the timeless Sridevi as an arrogant spoilt rich bitch who mouthed insanely capitalistic dialogues like "I hate the poor".

Thirty years later, Tamannaah Bhatia does a Sridevi. She gets into Sridevi's leather pants, with a whip to match and tortures the peasants in a village lorded over by a fatuous feudal dad who is not really evil. He is just mad. Somehow Tamannaah misses the bus and the bullock-car by a wide margin. Not her fault, really. It's the mood and milieu that this oddball of a remake generates.

We hear the larger-than-life hero Ravi (Ajay) mouth words of old-fashioned heroism with a straight face. But somehow we aren't convinced if he means business. Indeed, there was more than a dash of Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew in the way the original Himmatwala Jeetendra brought Sridevi to heel.

The new-age Sridevi is a squeal. She quickly changes from her audacious mini skirts and high heels with whips as accessories, to being a simpering salwar-kameez-clad doormat who is willing to walk that extra mile for the man in her life.

There are only two other female characters in the entire plot. The hero's long-suffering mother(played with commendable dignity by Zarina Wahab) and a sister (Leena Jumani). Vanquished by the villains, the mother and daughter live in the village forests.

Curiously the daughter appears to have walked straight out of a gym. Like all good sisters from the past history of commercial cinema, this one too nearly gets gang-raped. This one happens in a sealed van(Delhi's grisly rape reconstructed?) until the hero appears to literally crush the wannabe-rapists' balls. Ouch. Devgn ends his ballsy crusade with one of the film's many bravura-tinged exclamation lines: "As long as women are attacked, Himmatwalas would be born."

Chalk up a long-hurrah for this dime-store braveheart. We can look at Ajay Devgn in "Himmatwala" as the man who came in from the cold and warmed up the bucolic baddies' backsides with what he calls a "bum pe laat". That, we can say is the other side of the jadoo ki jhappi which Sanjay Dutt used to heal the world not so long ago. I guess Sanjay's jadoo ki jhappi got a bum pe laat .

Cute? That's how Ajay plays his shehar ka hero gaon ka super-hero part. He wants us to believe he is having fun with the trite part. But the boredom underneath the facade of fun shows up often enough to make us cringe.

The fractured world of Sajid Khan's "Himmatwala" is not looking for healing. It is happy being unfinished, wonky and out of shape. A wheezing grunting snoring world of demented feudalism where the Zamindar, as played by the gifted Mahesh Manjrekar is part-fiend, part-clown. Meals are not cooked in this tottering tyrant's kitchen. Instead he orders the villagers to get him khaana from their homes which he eats on a table long enough to serve as the passenger's cabin in a domestic airline. And when his daughter announces she is pregnant, the father throws a fit in the style of a 8-year-old who has just been told his favourite GI Joe has gotten flushed down the toilet.

The narrative serves up enough 'feud' for thought to make our heads go dizzy with thoughts of ruptured continuity. But gosh, are we really seeking logical explanation for what the characters do, say and convey in this film where a tiger appears from nowhere to help the hero fight the goons in the climax? Is this a film to be taken seriously? Presuming for a minute that we are expected to abandon all rationale and ...well go with flow, how do we set aside the uneasy feeling that the narrative is laughing not with us, but at us?

The second movement of the pesky potboiler is taken over by the Mahesh Manjrekar-Paresh Rawal duo doing the Amjad Khan-Kader Khan banter from the original "Himmatwala" with a dash of homo-erotic humour thrown in when the duo are forced to share a bed in a cowshed. This is where the mystery of the shapeless potboiler deepens.

The dialogue that follows between the two bedded buffoons has to be heard to be believed. To their credit, Manjrekar and Rawal, seasoned troupers both, try their utmost to have fun with their parts. Their vain efforts to infuse a joie de vivre in the clogged veins of this perverse potboiler only reminds us that stereotypical characters from conventional mainstream cinema died long before Joy Mukherjee.

Any attempt to revive the old-fashioned masala potboiler would require oodles of inbuilt humour and a developed sense of spoofiness. "Himmatwala" lacks both. It is neither fish nor fowl. How does one describe the film in a nutshell? For that we can go back to one of the songs recreated from the original Himmatwala.

Ho tacky ho tacky ho tacky tacky tacky re...

'Himmatwala' Tweet Review: First day, first show

Rohit Vats IBNLive.com | 29-Mar 09:57 AM

New Delhi: Sajid Khan has won the first round as his latest film 'Himmatwala' has generated a high level of curiosity among the audiences, but will the film turn out to be worth waiting for?

'Himmatwala' is the remake of a homonymous film made by K Raghavendra Rao in 1983, however Sajid Khan is expected to give the old story some new twists to make it contemporary.

The film stars Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles while Paresh Rawal and Adhyayan Suman will also be seen in pivotal roles.

Sajid Khan's record at the box office is enviable as all of his previous films have been commercially successful but will he be able to repeat the magic of 'Housefull 2' with 'Himmatwala'?

Ajay Devgn's last two films 'Bol Bachchan' and 'Son Of Sardaar' grossed more than Rs 100 crore at the ticket window, so he would be hoping for another good finish with 'Himmatwala'.

Sajid appears confident but only the audience will decide the fate of the film. Critical success may not be desired by the makers of 'Himmatwala' but it can always help in generating good revenue.

Rohit Vats of IBNLive is inside the theatre to live tweet the experience of 'Himmatwala'.

10:15 AM: Stay tuned for the tweet review of #Himmatwala.

10:18 AM: Directed by Sajid Khan, #Himmatwala stars Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah in the lead roles.

10:25 AM: #Himmatwala also features Paresh Rawal, Adhyayan Suman and Mahesh Manjrekar in important roles.

10:30 AM: #Himmatwala is a remake if K Raghavendra Rao's 1983 film of the same name. It starred Sridevi and Jeetendra.

10:35 AM: #Himmatwala is Sajid Khan's fourth film as director after 'Heyy Babyy', 'Housefull' and 'Housefull 2'.

10:45 AM: Sonakshi Sinha does the famous MJ step moonwalk in the beginning. And here comes the man everybody was waiting for. #Himmatwala

10:55 AM: It's actually a film based in early 1980s. Ajay Devgn's entry is on the expected line. #Himmatwala

11:05 AM: #Himmatwala seems like any other Sajid Khan film sans Akshay Kumar. Let's see how Ajay Devgn fits the bill.

11:07 PM: #Himmatwala will remind you of everyone from Kader Khan to Rakhi. Paresh Rawal is in a completely new avatar.

11:13 AM: Sajid Khan is giving tribute to world filmmakers in his own style. It's mindless though. #Himmatwala

11:17 AM: The scenes in #Himmatwala are extremely difficult to explain. Maar de uske bum pe laat jo tujhe darata hai.

11:30 AM: Sarkari aadmi ka naam Vietnam se bhi bada hota hai- quotable quote from #Himmatwala.

11:36 AM: Ajay Devgn is fighting a tiger after a long time. #Himmatwala can remind you of Vijaypath. Dhanna ke rampuri ki jai ho.

11:42 AM: Kyun sajna pe dil aa gaya. #Himmatwala has grand sets and a unique signature tune. Adhyayan Suman makes his presence felt.

11:50 AM: Arre Iqbal chacha aap? Salaam Walaikum. #Himmatwala is hell bent on recreating a world that doesn't exist even in our subconscious.

11:56 AM: The research for #Himmatwala must have included watching at least 1000 DVDs. But is this much sufficient for a thrilling film?

12:00 PM: #Himmatwala needs to connect with today's audience if it needs to excel. Hope the writers will take care of it.

12:05 PM: Teri maa meri maa..teri behan meri behan..aur isiliye Sajid ka problem hum sab ka problem. #Himmatwala

12:10 PM: Good to see Sajid Khan trying to include some social messages in #Himmatwala but everything comes at a cost you see.

12:15 PM: Ghar ka kaam karne me sharm kaisi, ye toh mera farz hai. #Himmatwala has entered into a TV serial mode.

12:20 PM: Sajid Khan has taken the word remake very seriously. One doesn't need to see the original film after watching Sajid's #Himmatwala.

12:25 PM: Crane shots are used to show transitions since time immemorial in Bollywood. #Himmatwala

12:30 PM: Sajid Khan's fascination for big bungalows continues in #Himmatwala. Taki taki re...Tamannaah has all the essential elements of a Bollywood heroine. Her dancing skill is a bonus.

12:35 PM: Paresh Rawal and Mahesh Manjrekar are trying their best to evoke laughters in a film that defies all logic. #Himmatwala

12:40 PM: Ghatak - 1 item girl. Rowdy Rathore - 3 item girls. #Himmatwala - 5 item girls. Dhoka de gaya re...

12:45 PM: Bappi Lahiri's voice still has a magnetic charm. He can make you dance on dhokha dhokha song of #Himmatwala.

12:50 PM: Some scenes in #Himmatwala appear out of place. But then different filmmakers have different motives.

12:55 PM: Dabangg + Son of Sardaar + Laawaris + Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi + Ram Lakhan + Many more films = #Himmatwala

12:58 PM: #Himmatwala is heading towards the finish. Will Sajid Khan pack it up with the director's punch?

01:01 PM: Sajid Khan's #Himmatwala ends as per the popular expectations. #Himmatwala has nothing new to offer as it's similar to the original film but the picturisation of songs is a thing to look out for.

01:05 PM: Almost every actor has done overacting, still Paresh Rawal leaves his impression. #Himmatwala

01:10 PM: Tamannaah looks fabulous but she has not been given a substantial role. Ajay Devgn carries forward his Son of Sardaar act. #Himmatwala

01:15 PM: #Himmatwala questions the audience's intelligence at times but then Sajid Khan never asked for critical acclaim.

01:20 PM: The fate of #Himmatwala is completely in the hands of the viewers. The success or failure of the film will also decide the popular choice.

01:25 PM: Songs are the highlights of #Himmatwala but the audience will definitely ask for something more than just songs.

01:30 PM: Thanks for being with us throughout the tweet review of #Himmatwala. Have a good day.
