Each of us has a different expression for their pain - some may lament, some may vow to keep that promise no matter what and yet others may use those tears to adorn their beloved's picture in their broken heart.

Film: Dekh Kabira Roya (1957)

There is a distinct, awful pain that comes with loving someone more than they love you!! What brings us to tears, will lead us to grace. Our pain is never wasted!!

You realize how much you truly miss someone when something happens, good or bad, and the only person you want to tell is the one person who isn't there.

Dekh Kabira roya is musical excellence.

Kaun aaya mere mann ke dwaare is another perennial favorite of mine and will always make it to my Top Mannadey songs list!

The movie itself is so-so, the acting mediocre , except for Shubha Khote who's always sincere. But the songs! ⭐️

There are sad songs, songs of heartbreak and then there are songs of regret. Sometimes these can sound like whiny complaints, and indulgence in a heavy bout of self-pity but still, there are some beautiful songs of regret that evoke a different kind of pain. Sometimes its Why me, other times its What if and yet other times its If only...Whatever the tone, there is always a thread of longing, hurt and bitterness running through them...

In the raag Bhimpalasi (such a beautiful raag 😭)

Song: Maine chand aur sitaron ki tamanna ki thi

Film: Chandrakanta (1956)

Music: N. Datta

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singer: Mohd. Rafi

And this one nicely justifies why its so important for pain, heartbreak and betrayal to exist, because if they weren't there, where would all the stories of them go??

Na milta gham toh barbaadi ke afsaane kahaan jaate?

agar duniyaa chaman hoti toh viraane kahaan jaate?

chalo accha hua apnon mein koi gair to nikla

agar hote sabhi apne, toh begaane kahaan jaate?

Film: Amar (1954)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

This longing is my curse, and your burden to carry till the end. One has to pay a price, for breaking something, and staying broken!!

Sometimes the heartbreak has both lovers in its grip, both feeling it in equal measure but where they place the blame differs: one curses fate and the other has no qualms about calling out their lover for their broken promises. In either case, their hearts cry out this plaintive lament.

Song: Dekh liya maine

Film: Deedar (1951)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Singers: Rafi & Lata
