The theme you've selected is a multi-layered one. ❤️⭐️❤️ Excellent theme and there are many songs in Hindi movies to fit in this category. ❤️

This song will suit to both theme, and the occasion, Lata's death anniversary.

Thank you, goofycat for reminding us of this event. ❤️

Arre ye thread khatam karna hai! I thought the last two themes would be enough! Looks like not!

So I'm posting a new theme, if the current one is done?

If not, we can still keep posting songs from all the other themes! No rules here except I wanna see this thread ending soon! 😳

Okay, so we've had a lot of exuberance and joy and even some amount of teasing and seduction. Now let's move on to sad songs. Songs of regret, remembrance, betrayal or heartbreak.

Like the poet Shelley said:

Our sincerest laughter with some pain is fraught;

Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.

Yet if we could scorn hate, and pride, and fear;

If we were things born not to shed a tear,

I know not how thy joy we ever should come near.

A sentiment which was echoed in Shailendra's poetry:

Hai sabse madhur woh geet jinhe hum dard ke sur mein gaate hain

It's true, isn't it? Without pain we would not know nor embrace the sweetness of joy which is a balm to heal our wounds. If a heart is not wounded at all, how will it learn to appreciate the soothing calmness of love? Without tears to wash away the pain, how will the heart heal?

Here are some songs of heartbreak - some of my eternal favorites, they never fail to pierce the heart with their poignance.

Starting with Lata's numbers

Film: Baiju Bawra (1952)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vsxun4s9l-8

Film: Sazaa (1951)

Music: S.D. Burman

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSkgzTahEfg

Film: Champakali (1957)

Music: Hemant Kumar

Lyrics: Rajinder Kishen

Next set is going to be all Rafi ❤️ because if his romantic voice is sultry & playful, his heartbreak voice is just as soulful 😭

Film: Deedar (1951)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCOo0byrlVU

The pitch he hits at "Lo aaj kinare par aake"! 😭 You can reach out and touch the pain!

Film: Bambai ka Babu (1960)

Music: S.D. Burman

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKFzjks6U34

This seems such a simple tune but Dada Burman imbues it with so much feeling, and of course Rafi's voice does the rest.

Patthar ke aashna mile, patthar ke devta mile

Sheeshe ka dil liye jaoon kahan? 😭

Film: Haqeeqat (1964)

Music: Madan Mohan

Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoQNRBMwFQA

This is a song that only works with all 3 elements working in tandem: the music, the lyrics and the voice. My God what a song! 😭 I cannot listen to it without tears streaming ...

magar usne roka, na usne manaaya

na daaman hi pakda, na mujhko bithaaya

na aawaaz hi di, na vwapas bulaaya

main aahista aahista badhta hi aaya

yahan tak ke us se juda ho gaya main
