Looks like we've serendipitously lapsed into a discussion on raag 'Bhupali' or 'Mohanam'.😆

Here are some more songs in raag Bhupali

Neel gagan ki chaon mein from Amrapali (1966) ❤️

Music: Shankar Jaikishen, Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri, Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55LRrp3XNA4

Pancchi banoon udti phiroon from Chori Chori (1956) ❤️

Music: Shankar Jaikishen, Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri, Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GQ2QXul-Po

Sayonara Sayonara from Love in Tokyo (1966)

Music: Shankar Jaikishen, Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri, Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

(How cleverly SJ have tweaked this classical raag into sounding like a Japanese Hogaku!

Notice how all the 3 songs have the same musical team! Looks like Raag Bhupali is quite a favorite with SJ!

I am bringing Raag Shuddh Kalyan in Hindustani and its equivalent in Carnatic music is Mohana Kalyani

Two famous songs came one after the other and created by awesome music directors. Don’t know which one was inspired from which.

One is Rasik Balma (Chori Chori) and the other one is Chand Phir Nikla (Paying Guest) - Both are my favorites 😍

Prema, I love both these songs!

Rasik Balma is sooooo difficult to sing, the pitches Lata goes to! OMG!

I think this was one of the songs she was alluding to when she complained of how high-pitched SJ made her sing! 😆 It's a beautiful song though.

Here's more Shuddha Kalyan..

Jahan daal daal par sone ki from Sikandar-e-azam (1965)

Music: Hansraj Behl, Lyrics: Rajinder Kishen, Singer: Mohammad Rafi

I remember this song playing at every Independence day and Republic day!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0kPkqkrHPk

Meri mohabbat jawan rahegi from Janwar (1965)

Music: Shankar Jaikishen, Lyrics: Shailendra, Singer: Mohammad Rafi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TadE4apdaSA

Ye shaam ki tanhaiyyan from Aah (1953)

Music: Shankar Jaikishen, Lyrics: Shailendra, Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

(I love love love this song! )

Shuddha Kalyan sounds so similar to Bhupali! That's because it's ascent (aaroh) is that of Bhoopali and it's descent (Avroh) is that of Kalyan (Yaman). That's why its referred to as Bhoop Kalyan too!

Thoroughly enjoyed reading your write-up and the songs as well. Understood the swara pattern based on the aaroh and avrohas you said, the name Bhoop Kalyan, perfectly in sync with its Carnatic equivalent of Mohanan (Bhoopali) on the aaroh and Kalyani ( Yamam) on the avaroh.

I totally agree with you that Rasik Balma is at a higher pitch, may be Lata was singing at A#, also felt Chand Phir Nikla had some high pitch verses as well

“ kadi hoon mein phir bhi nighahen bichaye”

“Jala gaya tan ko baharon ke saaye”

I think it’s the range of the scale SJ made her traverse. Like in Shaam ki tanhaiyyan

Jis raah se tum jaane ko the is in a lower octave and then

Aaye na tum toh sau dafa in a higher scale.

I heard her in one interview she said in a complaining tone that they always gave her high-pitched songs 😆

Yes Chand phir nikla also has some high notes..

Salil da was another MD that made Lata sing in impossibly high pitches!

The essence of Samaveda is the song I'm singing ever,

Becoming Brahma while writing a few lines to create a new world...

I made you listen to this song by becoming a violin

Becoming the sounds of woken up birds on the stage of blue skies..

The waves of breathing sound that will speak out of every infant that is born..

Priya mentioned Raag Bhoopaali ... In Carnatic music, the same raag is called “Mohana Raaga.

The wordings of the compositions in morning ragas Bhairav and Bhoopali, Abhogi, Jogia... are often meant to rouse the gods themselves, or describe Shiva in all his rough-hewn glory, or to offer gratitude for the passing of the night and the coming of another dawn!

Each raga is uniquely defined by its pitch collection and characteristic phrase. Each raga has some mood associated with it that can be related to its pitches and their relations one with another. Certain pitch classes commonly occur in ragas conveying a particular kind of emotion. The pitch set of a raga and its characteristic phrase establish the flavor or mood of the raga. It is a well-accepted notion that there are 11 basic moods in north Indian classical music that can be depicted through a combination of music, dance and poetry.

In 50s and 60s Bollywood music composers are mostly trained singers and musicians, who composed their music based on some Classical Raagas,

“Raag Bhupali” is a Hindustani classical raga. It presents a pentatonic scale (uses 5 notes in ascending and descending scale). Most of the songs in this raga are based on the Bhakti rasa. Some dearly loved, all-time favourite Bollywood film melodies like this --

Jyoti kalash chhalke

This morning song is one of my favourite!

Bhupali is one my favourite ones to perform, it is fairly easy yet so versatile!!

Bhakti songs pour the heart out in simplest words and it's an absolute delight to hear, at any given time! ❤️

Here's a favorite of mine - a Marathi bhajan in Bhupali by Sant Eknath sung by the inimitable M.S. Subbulakshmi from her 10 Languages album.

A perfect way to begin your morning - this raag instills devotion like no other! ❤️

And another one from her film, Meera (1947), Giridhar Gopala also in Bhupali. Her rendition brings tears. There's really no other like her!

It snowed yesterday, so it's pretty much white heaven outside (freezing white heaven). Almost 6 pm, me in my office drowning myself in a hot cup of coffee and working with this song in the background. This is probably my boss's soul and all the pending work singing out to me 😆😭
