Baiju Bawra was a triumph for Naushad, since the director, Vijay Bhatt was skeptical about having an all-classical raag based soundtrack. But Naushad ran with it and the results are evident for all to see.

Baiju Bawra was a certified hit and catapulted Rafi into the top league of playback singers where he firmly stayed for almost 2 decades until the late 60s when RD Burman and Kishore Kumar began their reign.

This soundtrack is among my favorites not just because of its classical based songs, all of which are incredible but it's also close to me for personal reasons. I have more than one sentimental memory attached to it! 😭❤️

Be it the incredible jugalbandi between D.V Paluskar and Ustad Amir Khan, Aaj Gawat main mero in raag Deshi or Lata's plaintive 'Mohe bhool gaye saawariya' in raag Bhairav or the astounding 'Oh duniya ke rakhwale' where it was rumored Rafi stretched his vocal chords so much that his throat began to bleed, every song is a treasure.

I would recommend you to listen to the whole soundtrack. Honestly, I cannot think of one bad song in this movie. Naushad managed to rope in the stalwarts of Hindustani classical music at the time to sing for this soundtrack, something that was unheard of in those times. This was a feat he also repeated in Mughal-e-Azam with Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Prem Jogan ban ke, though that was mainly thanks to K. Asif's dogged persistence.

I'm posting this one - 'Man tarpat Hari darshan ko aaj' in raag Malkauns. Much has been made of how 3 Muslims (Rafi, Shakeel and Naushad) were responsible for the creation of this devotional song steeped in Hindu tradition.

Just listen to the absolute devotion in Rafi's voice when he sings: 'Mohe darshan bhiksha de do aaj' 😭

Incidentally, Hari can be taken to mean the Lord of course but also Baiju's Guru, Swami Haridas, who's bedridden and this song is calling out to him to rise to his feet and bless Baiju. Truly, they don't make them like this anymore! 😭 Such bliss!

Today, I am gifting this song to all my friends here---

This song is from the movie..Aah(1953) starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis, singer..Lata Mangeshkar... Beautiful song with soulful lyrics. Her eyes speaks, she does not need words to tell her inner turmoil!

Joy, sorrow, tears, lamentation, laughter, longing, to all these music gives voice.

Melodious sad song based on rag bhupali, heart touching sensational lyrics

by Shailendra ,sweet voice of Lata, evergreen the great Music Director

Shankar Jaikishan.my favourite song, to listen today.

Kri and Madhu, you have both posted songs from RK movies and both brilliant soundtracks! - Barsaat and Aah.

Patli Kamar hai and Barsaat! What to say about Barsaat (1949)? I think this was the movie where Raj Kapoor really came into his own as a director. This movie is also where the famous RK logo came from.

The story is about two friends with completely different outlooks towards life and love with Gopal (Premnath) choosing a hedonistic and cavalier lifestyle, playing fast and loose with the women in his life, while the girl who loves him truly (Nimmi) pines for him and withers away. While on the other hand Pran (Raj Kapoor) totally surrenders his heart for his true love, Reshma (Nargis), allowing it to take over him completely. Gopal mocks Pran all through, but is forced to concede defeat in the end.

The highlight of Barsaat for me are the songs. Shankar-Jaikishen (and Mukesh) firmly entrenched themselves into the RK camp with this one, and not surprising at all!

The title song Barsaat mein became iconic as did Jiya beqaraar hai and Hawa mein udta jaaye. Add to that the lilting romantic tunes - Mujhe kisise pyaar ho gaya, Meri aankhon mien bas gaya koi re, and the ones of heartbreak - Chhod gaye baalam, Bichde hue pardesi, Main zindagi mein hardam rota hee raha hoon (the one Rafi song in the movie).

My favorite though is this one- Ab mera kaun sahara. Heart-wrenchingly beautiful song, exquisitely rendered by Lata.😭 Nargis looks so lovely in this!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YNjIUDLq4o

And Aah! Again beautiful songs. The movie itself starts out promisingly- a premise that has been revisited a few times in Hindi movies. Nargis begins writing to Raj on behalf of her sister who he's supposed to marry and he falls in love with her through her letters not knowing she's not his intended. When they meet in person, of course, heartbreak ensues (for Nargis) because she's fallen for him too, but she knows he will marry her sister. Later it devolves into something else, so it's not my favorite RK movie to rewatch. But for the songs!

Madhu, you posted my most favorite song from the movie- Ye shaam ki tanhaiyaan. Such a beautiful composition, and I can see how it's based on Raag Bhupali since you mentioned it, though it never occurred to me before! The lyrics by Shailendra speak of the pain of waiting in the most poignant way. 😭

Jis raah se tum aane ko the, uske nishaan bhi mitne lage

aaye na tum toh sau dafa aaye gaye mausam

Like I said, Aah has great songs - Jaane na nazar, pehchaane jigar, Chhoti si ye zindagani (which has Mukesh singing onscreen) Raja ki aayegi baaraat, Raat andheri door savera, Sunte the naam hum.

Here's another achingly beautiful composition from this movie. I cannot tell you how much I love this song, the piercing lyrics, the longing, the pain of heartbreak! 😭Wow! 👏

Aaja re, ab mera dil pukara

Ro roke gham bhi haara...😭

Since we're speaking of heartbreak and Shankar Jaikishen, I want to post this song by a perennial favorite, Talat Mahmood, picturized on another favorite, Dev Anand.

Dev usually had Rafi, in the early days and then Kishore later playing back for him most, but he's also had songs sung by Hemantda and Talat.

This movie, Patita, boasts other gems like Yaad kiya dilne (my absolute favorite!) and Kisine apna banake mujhko but this song never fails to make me cry, even more so when I watch it because the visual of Dev looking so serene, so kind, so gentle, stroking Usha Kiron's hair as she lays her head on his lap while lip-syncing to the heart-breaking song by Shailendra, is a visual that gives me goosebumps and lump the size of a golf ball in my throat. 😭

The first verse is inspired by Shelley's poem, To a Skylark and the lines -"Our sweetest songs are those that tell of the saddest thought" translating into "Hain sabse madhur woh geet jinhe hum dard ke sur mein gaate hain"

The music by SJ is unusually subdued, unlike the heavy orchestration they normally use, and creates a mood that is so apt for this song.

And Talat- what do I say about Talat's voice here? If all elements have come together to create perfection and just one ingredient remains that will complete it, then it's Talat's vocals.

Amazingly, achingly beautiful! CryClap

kaanton mein khile hain phool humare rang bhare armaanon ke

naadan hai jo in kaanton se daman ko bachaye jaate hain

pehlu mein paraye dard basake hasna hasana seekh zara

toofan se keh de ghir ke uthe, hum pyaar ke deep jalate hain

SINGER :MOHD . RAFI

LYRICS : SAHIR LUDHIANVI

MUSIC : JAIDEV

MOVIE : HUM DONO ( 1961 )

Sahir ne iss geet me Zindagi ki philosophy ko bahut hee khoobsurati se shabdon me samjhaya hai. Rafi Saheb ne gaya bhi utni hee shiddat se hai.

Main jindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya

Har fikr ko dhunen men udaata chala gaya

Barbaadiyon ka sog manaana fijul tha

Barbaadiyon ka jashn manaata chala gaya

Jo mil gaya usi ko mukaddar samajh liya

Jo kho gaya main us ko bhulaata chala gaya

Gam aur khushi men fark na mahasus ho jahaan

Main dil ko us makaam pe laata chala gaya

Sahi kaha aapne, Mousy! Iss gaane mein Sahir ne toh kamaal hee kar diya. Iski tune bhi bohot hee sundar hai! Mere favorite gaanon mein se hai ye! Koi bhi Dev Anand Top 10 iske bina complete nahi hoga!

Sahir ne sachmuch zindagi ko iss kavita mein bohot hee sahi samjhaya hai..

Ye linein khaas kar ke..

Barbadiyon ka soz manana fizool tha

Barbadiyon ka jashn manata chala gaya

(kaash hum sabhi aisa kar paate! 😒)

Jo kho gaya main usko bhulata chala gaya..

Gham aur khushi mein fark na mehsoos ho jahan

main dil ko uss muqaam pe laata chala gaya

Sach poocho toh ye Bhagvad Geeta ki bhi philosophy hai - ki karm karo aur phal ki apeksha mat karo.

Iss tarah se zindagi jiyo ke gham, khushi ye saari transient cheezein tumhe affect na karein!

Wah! Kya baat kahi hai Sahir sahab ne! ❤️

I wanted to post this beautiful song from Jhumroo (1961) - Koi humdum na raha, ever since Madhu unexpectedly brought up K.L. Saigal's songs during our chat. Now you will wonder what the connection between Saigal and this song is.

Well, until a while ago I believed this song was composed by Kishore Kumar with lyrics by Majrooh. Then I unexpectedly came across another version of this song, from way back in the 30s. To be precise, the year 1936, sung by none other than Kishore Kumar's older brother, Ashok Kumar from the film Jeevan Naiyya. It had music by Saraswati Devi and the lyrics were by J.S Kashyap. And since this is an era I associate Saigal with, I wanted to post a song from this time and I thought of this one which had a newer and an older version!

This is just how my twisted mind works! 😆

Here are both versions:

I have loved Kishoreda's version for years now, he brings so much pathos into his rendition! ❤️ But ever since I heard Dada moni's version, it has begun growing on me! ❤️ And now I love it just as much!

I'm aware Kishoreda declared his intent of recreating this song to Dada Moni and was dissuaded at first, but I'm wondering if Kishoreda credited the original composer, Saraswati Devi, and the lyricist, since the tune (and the lyrics of the mukhda) are intact.
