Tomato, eggplant, mushroom and peppers are nightshades, which are reported to cause inflammation. However, there is not a lot of evidence proving that. Therefore ppl who have arthritis avoid it to not aggravate the pain. It can also be related to being allergic to nightshades than due to inflammation. Tomatoes are good source of vitamin and antioxidants. Also, it has lycopene which is good for cancer. When it has good benefits also, I would say if consumed not in excess quantity it’s still good. Therefore, you could enjoy your tomato chutney , but maybe less often. I remember reading that NFL player Tom Brady and his wife doesn’t eat tomatoes and I searched this back then.
In Ayurveda, they mostly avoid cooking with garlic and onion because it can aggravate pitta resulting in irritation ( physically and emotionally). Although they have many benefits. Ayurveda links foods to dosha. If you are pitta then it’s advised to not eat strong pungent vegetables. I believe in eating foods that have good benefits even if they have some cons as long as it’s not done in excessive amount.
Fruits and vegetables even with the cons are certainly better than all the junk food and high sugar beverages ppl consume on daily basis ( also give to kids from a very young age).
