There isn't much that can distract her once she's around the cold familiarity the numbers offer.
The world fades away. The voices drown out. Her fears are put to rest.

This is home.

She doesn't realize where she is or why until she feels a tap on her shoulder. Instinctively, she pulls down her glasses and stares up at the face of the boarding gate attendant.

'Miss, boarding is about to close. Please hurry.'

She's apologizing and fumbling to pack her things in an instant.

She makes the plane in time but as she's walking towards her seat, she can't help feeling like it's already too late.

There's no turning back now.

She's flying business class. She's earned that little luxury with her own hard work. The seat next to hers seems to be mercifully empty and Vidushi let go of a breath she was not aware that she was holding in, like some primival fear.
She opened the flight magazine and prepared to lose herself in colorful illustrations. Flight magazines transported her into some dreamlike state. A place of possibilities.
She'd need that if she was to face what lay ahead.

No good deed goes unpunished.
She'd always been a big believer of that but time had a way of making you forget your most hard earned lessons. That and being 20,000 feet in the sky.

Which would explain how she found herself crammed in the middle aisle seat in the economy class. She'd voluntarily, VOLUNTARILY given up her seat to the young mom and her wailing baby. Just so they could be seated next to their dad. Who obviously didn't care enough about them to get them business class.

'But Miss, it was a complimentary upgrade!' The air hostess reasons with her and she just nods and smiles. Of course, it was.

But she had volunteered, so really, she had no one to blame but herself.

--

She's finally settled in her seat. Unpacked her laptop and is just opening her spreadsheet when she's interrupted yet again. Too disgruntled to even bother with her glasses, she looks up expectantly with a polite smile.

'I'm so sorry Miss, but would you mind changing your seat again?'

WHAT?!

She looked at her in shock. You have got to be kidding me. 'Excuse me?'

'To First Class.'

'What?' She couldn't believe this.

'It's a window seat, maam'

'No.'

This time it was the flight attendant's turn to be surprised. 'What?'

'No, I'm fine here. Besides you could have offered me this seat before.'

'We're sorry miss. A gentleman had booked the entire First Class but he saw what you did and he'd like to repay your kindness to that family.'

--

She'd didn't know why she agreed, but soon she was pulling her trolley bag into First Class even as she shuffled to balance her laptop. Wanting this nightmare of a flight to be over with already.

And that is how she came face to face with the last person she ever wanted to see.

The small glimpse she had caught of him before had meant that she could avoid the earth shattering consequences of existing in the same place as him.
But now, with his eyes, dark and same but different all at once, were assessing her with an unreadable intention in their depths.
She was grateful for the air hostess's interjection about which seat was hers.
She was far more grateful to move away from him and face the air hostess. To politely inquire who she had to thank for his kindness of giving her that seat.
The air hostess only smiled
"Please take your seat ma'am. We will be taking off shortly."

Vidushi didn't want to argue. Didn't want to demand.
she'd rather stay as quiet as she possibly could. Try to not draw attention to herself.
A part of her knew it was futile.
She'd been seen.

She should have expected this. Expected his overpowering presence when he claimed the seat next to hers.

I give up.

Here's the reset.

"I don't care about you. No one does." He whispers even as his thumb rubs against her lower lip, smearing her lipstick.

He expects a shrill sound of indignation for how he's tainted her skin. A taunt about how he's never cared about her. He expects what he has always got from her. Fire to meet his own. To fuel his anger.
Her teeth do not snag his thumb.
She doesn't pull away to paint his cheek red to match her chin.
Under his watchful gaze Parth watches Vidushi freeze over.

"Tell me something I don't know." The words are a mere whisper but he feels them crush his chest.

They are more effective than any of her actions could ever be.

Her indifferent admission reeks of resigned submission. It sting his skin like poison.

He knows how to play with fire, loves it even - but its the icy numbness that turns him to ash.

His grip tightens around her arm.

He knows the grip is slightly painful, knows his own strength all too well. It should cause her to flinch, cry out or try to release her arm from his hold.
He likes their little games for the responsiveness she shows.
Her eyes widening, breath hitching, the way she licks at her lips nervously.
But right now, her body is slack, her hair covers half her face.
Her face, which is turned away from him.
He has never been a gracious loser.

Did she really think he was going to fall to his knees just because she'd turned into stone right before his eyes?

He digs his nails into her arm. Watches for a reaction.

Nothing.

Her stoic apathy infuriates him. Her conceited arrogance mocks him.

Well, two could play this game, even if she changed the rules midway.

He reaches out, bunches the hair covering her face into a fist and pulls her flush against him.

When his mouth covers her lips, they don't part.

He smirks at the old familiarity.

When it came to her, he's always known how to turn back time.

He lets go suddenly, permitting her to take a hasty step back.
The slightest of trembles shakes her small frame.
His body remembers, and with the way that her eyes are tightly shut, as if she was afraid she'd give herself away, he knows hers isn't as forgetful as she would like it to be.
They are pressed against each other, her body between the wall and his chest, his fingers clenching her jaw.
He waits until he hears the slightest whimper of pain and then he forces her chin upward, making her look into his eyes.
And there it is, just like the first time.
