If the show makers had tried to twist the plot to suit their own imagination then Martin's lawyers would have sued them by now. Lawsuits are extremely common here in the U.S. I think the show is panning out exactly as Martin has envisioned.

I think it must be part of the contract. For the first four or five seasons Martin was actually a part of the scriptwriter and the story maker. He resigned from that position because he wanted to focus on his books writing.
