The BJP government in Rajasthan has decided to rope in pandits, halwais (caterers) and tent house dealers to tackle child marriages, which are rampant across the state.
The state home department has issued a directive to all district collectors and superintendents of police (SPs) to this effect. The timing is key in view of upcoming auspicious occasions like Akshaya Tritiya and Peepal Purnima when a large number of marriages, including child marriages, take place.
It is believed that though the families concerned discretely conduct child marriage ceremonies in view of the legal ban, they will not be able to keep the secret from pandits, halwais and tent dealers owing to the nature of their involvement in such events.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) A. Mukhopadhyay has sent a circular to all district collectors and SPs, asking them to keep a strict watch on possible child marriages on Akshaya Tritiya and Peepal Purnima, which fall on April 21 and May 4 in that order.
The officials will keep an eye on such ceremonies from panchayat to sub divisional level.
The circular has urged the senior officials to involve elected representatives in awareness programmes to publicise the provisions of the Prohibition of child Marriage Act, 2006. It also asks the district administrations to activate women groups at district, block and village levels in this endeavour.
It has also directed them to seek help from the departments of education, health, revenue, women & child development, and social justice activists.
The administration will now have to set up control rooms at district and sub divisional headquarters upon the instruction of the state home department.
Sub divisional magistrates have been asked to fix responsibilities and take disciplinary actions against erring officials.
The Rajasthan Tent Dealers Association in Jaipur on Tuesday asked its members to confirm marriage bookings only after examining age certificates of brides and bridegrooms.
"We have sent circulars to all its 40,000 members across the state. If anyone refuses to provide age certificates to us or forces us to make bookings, the association will inform the police," said Ravi Jindal, president of the association.
