Custody

Manju Kapur delves into the trials and tribulations of the Indian middle class
Custody, Manju Kapur, indian middle class, the immigrant, home
Manju Kapur's latest effort, Custody, sticks to familiar territory: the trials and tribulations of the Indian middle class. We meet Shagun and Raman, just as their marriage is falling apart. Shagun abandons her husband and children for Raman's boss, the alpha wolf at "The Brand", a thinly disguised Coca-Cola, and thus begins the problem that will carry Kapur's text through its 400-odd pages: what about the kids?

Against the backdrop of a brand-new liberalised world, Kapur sketches out Shagun's boredom, Raman's hurt and the confusion of their children, Roohi and Arjun, who are batted back and forth between parents and across chapters. The two new partners in the equation, bossman Ashok and divorcee Ishita, struggle to woo their stepkids while supporting their spouses through an endless legal battle. Ashok forges a bond with Arjun by packing him off to his old alma mater, a barely-disguised Doon School, while befuddled baby Roohi clings to Ishita.

Shifting between points of view, Kapur explains everything for the comfort of the reader, in awkward phrases which never sound quite natural. "Everybody over a certain age was a cornucopia of prying questions," runs one line. "He was a corporate man with a strong belief in hard work," she says elsewhere of Ashok, sounding like a press release. Elsewhere , Ashok sounds like a motivational speaker, even when talking to himself: "Never criticise your product: breathe it, believe in it, make it your religion." Even the main characters are delineated with such a heavy hand that Kapur might as well have tacked a label onto each: Selfish Shagun, Alpha Male Ashok, Insecure Ishita, Respectable and Rather Insipid Raman.

By the time you've ploughed through all the repetitive chapters in which Raman and Shagun argue angrily or swap one kid for another to the end, you're more than happy to relinquish Custody.

This is what the story is all about.
Does this mean it will take leaps etc?

Serial is bit difference
Ishita is not a divorcee I think in serial
Neither they showed anything on sagun's boredom
Actually I never connected to Raman's harshness...it was way harsh...

Basic plot is same tough

I don't watch the show but the few scenes I caught here and there he was too tough and harsh and the description of him in this book is totally opposite.😆 May be Ekta Kapoor spice up Raman to make the love story spicier.

Yes.. YHM is supposed to be 'inspired' from this book. The names are same also. the character traits are also there. Ruhi's custody is totally done. IshRa married only to get Ruhi's custody.

Leap ? don't think there is going to be any leap atleast as of now.. But, Ekta maiyya is super fond of leap.. So, anything may happen in the future.

As of now.. in YHM, they introduced another brother for Ashok who wants to stop Ashok-shagun marriage. And this Ashok is eyeing Ishita's sister. 🤢 Shagun was a just time-pass for him. But, life is a full circle. Shagun is being treated the same way like she treated Raman.

As far as Raman-Ishita, they are getting close. Raman has closed his past and moved on.. He has realised his love towards Ishu(they haven't shown it but seems like it). Ishu is realizing her feelings for RKB.. Raman is pushing her towards her confession. 😳
Relationships ka kabada bana hai yahan par bhi just like BV.. Shagun's brother is Raman's best friend, Mihir.. Now, this Mihir is marrying Ishu's sister..So, Ishu's sister is basically marrying her Jeeju's ex's brother..

That's how all the masala comes in.😛😆
This way the ex spouses will come in contact with each other and all that drama will come out of it.
BV thanks to stupid parallel tracks and meeting only during celebrations and catastrophic events the other track has become boring.🥱

True.. the convulted relations bring in the family drama..
In BV Anandi's ex has become so goodie goodie and ofcourse our couple are born mahaan.. So, there can be no clashes between them.
In YHM, the lead couple are also born mahaan but the ex is not. The ex and her BF are plain selfish and they bring in lot of clashes.
