Ladies and (Gentlemen?) with great pleasure I announce thread#3 of our dear AKR. To have achieved something of this stature with a handful of members; get up gals, give yourselves a pat on your backs. It's time for us to indulge in some vainglory. 😉

I begin this thread with something that has been inculcated as an indispensable part of popular culture for too many years now. Our cinema.

The Indian Film Industry, lately given the west inspired moniker of Bollywood has truly come a long way, witnessed growth and recession both in terms of art, substance and business. It has bloomed in some aspects and has been reduced to mediocrity in others.

But am I here to blabber on and about the history, economics and politics of the countless three-hour stretches we all must have spent being an avid audience? Nope, I begin this thread only to know more about the beauty that art in any medium or form makes us celebrate.

In the next post, I'll give you a list of my all time favorite Hindi movies and hope my behens to be equally eager to share their own joyous experiences regarding the same. 😃

I was edging towards my last days of school, it was the day before my farewell party that I couldn't miss (being the head-girl, I was supposed to first address the gathering and make a farewell speech), but I wasn't particularly excited about it since my mom was out of town and I was supposed to drape a Sari. All harried I had called her up and asked her what was I supposed to do. She asked me to choose one Sari of my liking from her cupboard.
To recount that experience now, is to think how I would as a kid always jump to suggest my mother which sari to wear when we were going out somewhere and how I stood dumbstruck for a good half an hour unable to select one for myself out of Ma's utterly beautiful collection.

Naming a few of my favorite movies from a prodigious collection of must watches should be a task imposing an equal challenge. But I will anyway, and first...

1.

A sloshed Arti (Suchitra Sen) checks in a five star hotel in her state and soon succumbs to her drunken stupor in her suite's bath. How JK (Sanjeev Kumar) gets her out is well left to our imagination. 😆 But the next morning when Arti spiritedly though with some arrogance gives the manger her card which he chucks away nonchalantly, instead of being bitchy, she keeps her good humor and gives him another card warning him to not tear it again and zooms past him in her Impala. You know some not so fluffy romance is on its way.

Aandhi is beyond doubt an evergreen favorite. From Gulzaar'a direction, Kamleshwar's writing, Sanjeev Kumar's and Suchitra Sen's stellar performances and Puncham Da's timeless melodies, it is absolutely everything an audience can want.

The story of an ambitious woman (daughter of a successful and manipulative politician) and a simple man with a rather conservative upbringing was magnificently told in the year 1975. Their journey from togetherness to separation and back was superlative.

"Iss baar amavas ki raat bahut lambi chali, poore nau baras."

2.

Based on Erich Segal's Man, Woman and Child this 1983 Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Jugal Hansraaj starer classic has me in tears every time I watch it. Shekhar Kapoor's fabulous direction and Gulzaar's screenplay. And again, R.D Burman's music, this is another embarrassment of riches flick.

What has an innocent child got to do with his father's one mistake? A mistake that resulted in him? And how is a wife supposed to deal with the knowledge of her husband's apparent infidelity (even if it wasn't something purposeful and conscious) when they have together raised a family of two daughters. Oh how adorable is little Jugal Hansraaj and how cute was that tiny little girl. And perhaps the first song we all learned was Lakdi ki kaathi! 😛

"Ek khatma ho, toh dusri raat aa jati hai. Hothon pe phir bhuli hui baat aa jati hai. Do nainon ki hai, yeh kahani, thoda sa baadal thoda sa paani, aur ek kahani."

Sorry, but I can't possible stop there without naming a few more.
3.

Well, what can I say, I am a Gulzaar fan. And also a Waheeda Reheman fan. And am totally besotted with Hemant Kumar's music. I love Rajesh Khanna but frankly have never been a fan of his acting, but in Khamoshi, he's stupefying. Although, I wonder if it was Sanjeev Kumar in his place...

Love is so overrated, isn't it? And people fall in it still, forsaking all others, at the cost of sanity. Nurse Radha deals with such patients, betrayed by lover and ended up in a mental asylum. Her job is to make them fall for her and reinstate the faith in love in those who have lost faith in life and sanity because of that four letter word. But nobody realizes Radha's turmoil, her feelings that were never fake. She never faked love, how could she? She had truly loved Dev (Dharmendra), lost and given love another chance, true and deep for Arun (Rajesh Khanna), but then they had all deemed her the actress of the medical play. Even if Arun refuses to believe that she could have faked love, when the descent begins, no body could stop Radha from tripping herself over that fine thread of sanity.

I so badly wanted this song to be used in IPKKND. A situation be created and the song used, I had in fact even imagined scenarios, for this was the best answer to the perpetual question of nameless love posed in the show.

"Pyaar ko pyaar hi rehene do, koi naam na do."
Beautiful. 👏

4.

Many Congratulations Fellas! Thread Three Already? Partyy! 🥳

How thoughtful indeed! A thread owing to the 100 years of Indian Cinema! Yes, its definitely difficult to pick a few and name them out of the so many wonderful Amazing Movies but I gotta say, I loved what you picked! I know the story of Aandhi but haven't watched it. Neither did I watch Khamoshi. I should try watching these, sometime soon. But oh man! How can we ever, ever forget the Epic Andaaz Apna Apna?! Absolutely a Wonderful Choice there!! Couldn't agree any less! Epic, it was, is and will always be! 😆

["Pitaji, zara dheere, dheere.. Aapka toh pata nahin, lekin meri izzat hai yahan pe!"

"Teri jaisi nalayaq aulaad kahin nahin hogi!" "Hogi, Pitaji, hogi.. Meri jaisi aulaad wahin hogi jahan aap jaisa baap hoga! 🤣]

There are many many films of my choice I'd like to share but I tend to have a liking for the absolute fictions(meaning cliche, crappy, cheesy flicks where I'm all good with whatsoever happens as far as the leads unite in the end), so I shall not bore y'all with the never ending list. However, there are a few, I 'd still like to mention, ignoring the fact I just stated above! 😆

Bhaat Bhushan, Shalini and Farida Jalal's Taqdeer
Shashi Kapoor and Sadhna starrer Prem Patra
Sunil Dutt, Saira Bano, Mahmood and Kishore Kumar's Padosan
Dharmendra, Amitabh, Sharmila and Jaya Bachhan starrer Chupke Chupke

A few many more that I'll add as I recall! Interested, anyone? I bet, not! 😆

Alright people, couldn't help but make this post.
Apologies Tang, but you see I am in front of my computer all of my waking hours. Under such circumstances, it is implicit that I will succumb to the lure and make posts whenever I log into India Forums. Given the way how loquacious I am. 😆

What to do Behens' affection is so hard to resist.

So people, yours truly is now a proud Goldie. 😃 Yay. What a journey it has been. Virtual world is an amazing place, we people who have never met in real life, yet perhaps know each other better than many from our ADs. 😆
