I loved MJ in the Tobey one and was actually wondering why the name of the character is Gwen instead of MJ

That was one fault of the previous series.. It never gave gwen the place in Peter's story that she had in the original version.. & that's why this series was very clear from the get go that gwen was gonna get her due..

She is a very big influence behind Peter becoming the version of spidey that we saw on the last installment of the previous series.
