Agree with you Nisha, TRPs are very important. Yes, it's not accurate enough, but at the moment that is the only tool available. Channels charge lakhs for a prime slot, advertisers will have to fork that amount out, if they want their products to be shown. So, why take away the one thing that is an indication of viewership?
Unless you have a meter in every home, there is no way of getting an accurate figure. Also, homes have multiple TVs now? In extremely rural areas, there is probably one TV for X number of viewers. So, figures will never be accurate… What you can have is an indicator only.
(Well, one TV and X number of viewers in front of it, is not limited to rural areas if you think about it. But as a child I remember, visiting my dad's home town; people would go to homes with TV and watch programmes as TV wasn't in every house. )
