The story I have heard is a little different... At least that's what my s-i-l's family says...

Apparently she was singing at some event (in college, I think) where Rajnikanth was the chief guest. He was so taken by her singing that he sought her out and went to ask for her hand in marriage! The family was stupified and felt"honored" (like they couldn't say no... you know him not being a brahmin and all), but had to agree. 😆
