@Umz, well said.

Actually even my parents are related.
My mom's mother and my dad are second cousins or so. My parents knew each other from childhood, though they rarely spoke to each other. And my sister and I am perfectly fine.

Even a friend of mine from college fell in love with her cousin and got married recently. They thought the families will oppose but they didnt.

On my brother-in-law's side, most of his family is married to each other. My brother-in-law was the first to get married outside the family.

I am not against such relations honestly, because after seeing the state of arranged marriages around me, it's better to get married to someone you know .. well of course that doesn't mean you should be forced to marry someone you consider your brother.

In my immediate and extended family, only my parents are related. Like I would never marry a cousin and if I hear that someone likes their cousin I would find it weird I admit but I would never be against it. I believe that there are reasons for marrying within families but generally it's not something that continues. For example, because my parents were cousins, my genetic variability has been cut in half. I cannot marry anyone related to me because then problems with arise in the progeny.

Socially, I do not think it is wrong because like I said these are not sexually based relationships. These are mutually understood, emotional relationships.

Yes you did. It's sad that every time you have to look for a place to move, the first question that you ask is is it a safe neighborhood? It's sad, why can't every neighborhood be safe? Why can't the world be a safer place for women?

very true NB

I belong to a very conservative joint family and was kind of raised with the constant hammering that "we have a reputation...and being girls we always need to be extra careful about this and all that...my parents were more liberal but with so many elders even they couldn't say much"..we all played the goody girls, did what we were told to do but hell broke loose when my cousin sister fell in love with a Christian guy...I cant tell you it was like hell on earth for her..my uncle and aunty who loved her to bits ..her own parents locked her up..sent her away ...and literally made her life hell...

But she didnt give up and after a lot of struggle some part of the family agreed and there was a big fall out even within relatives...and eventually they got married...and they are very very happily married but still now even the immediate family has accepted them and they are very much a part of the family but some of the distant family and the neighbours still look at them as if they have done the most awful crime...she is a fighter so she brushes it off but I get so so cross and always end up fighting in every social occasion I attend..like for her own brother's wedding the priest didnt let her tie the scarfs as technically she is no more a Hindu ..although she hasnt changed her religion but technically she has after marriage and all that crap...

I really really hate this outrageous concern of people who just stick to the shallowness of religions and use it to their advantage...

Funny something similar happened in our family like this years ago with my dad's sister. Our family was a conservative catholic family and my grandpa had a prominent post in the church but my aunt fell in love and wanted to marry a pentecostal preacher. Well catholic and pentecostal have clashed on may occasions so there a lot of history there plus girl from respectable catholic families were only meant to marry catholic men. She went against every belief and she married the guy. It is no more than 34 years and they are still happily married.
