^^ For authenticity and depth, BY FAR the old one. I don't think anyone over the age of 12 will disagree. The only spheres in which the new one has an edge are grandeur of sets and special effects. And should you not wanna have to pull out the dusty VHSes to watch it, YT links are on the first page of this CC 😉

hahah..yes i will def not be pulling those out...lets see..i'll finish the new one and maybe next spring start the old one... what other good mythos aer there to watch? mahabharat seems lenghty and too much fighting for me, btu ppl say its good b/c it gives many underlining messages on how one should ideally think of life and whatnot

Awesome! Well... my other fav as Ramanand Sagar's Shri Krishna... it's sweet and authentic and gives background on a lot of the Krishna stories you hear and wonder, "why would God do that?" and makes them make sense. And everyone's acting is top-notch. It's long, but you're fine just watching until the Uddhav track because then... it gets complicated. Stopping there has enough closure.
Others... there's one new one that comes on NDTV called "Bharat ke Mahaan Sant", and it's by the same DiL of the Sagars who made Meera - so touching treatment of saint stories. I like it.
Mahabharat's nice but very complex, in fact perfect for debates at the forum, cuz each dialogue can be interpreted in like 10 different ways. Good if you want to think hard, but it won't tell you explicitly how you should think as I wish it did lol.
A bunch of others can be found here http://www.youtube.com/user/sikanderhyut
Of which Om Namah Shivay and Shiv Mahapuraan are both pretty decent but I prefer the latter cuz ONS is reaaaaaallllyyyy long.

But lemme see what else I can come up with cuz none of these other than Shri Krishna and BKMS is sweet and touching along the lines of Meera - they're more narrative and... mythological.

hey guys!
sorry I barely ever visit this CC (that is if anyone remembers me), but I was just randomly, going through the first page and read the discussion topics, I was so happy see such thought-provoking topics and you thoughts as well! I really hope to be more active here and join in the discussion.

btw@ desigrl: personally, I ABSOLUTELY love mahabharat! I would totally recommend it. That's another reason for the inactive-ness, I have watched very few episode of the old ramayan and none of the new one. But I would love to discuss mahabharat with someone! and about the fighting part, believe me once you watch it, it's really interesting and intriguing, coming from someone who loathes action movies😆

^^ Nah we remember you Anchal, welcome back 🤗 Thanks for liking the topics, sooo looking forward to you joining in on them at the new forum!! And yeah I love MB too, I call RS Ramayan, Shri Krishna, and BRC MB the mytho holy trinity 😆 The only thing is the ambiguities make people misinterpret characters - especially Yudhishtir - way to often... know what I mean?? In fact some really cool articles went up at the CC we have for it recently, methinks you'll enjoy them:

Old Ramayan is def better in terms of authenticity. Many times it used direct dialogues from Tulasi Ramayan, and it is def more devotional too. And the characters' characterizations were def more devotional and closer to the truth.
New Ramayan wasn't bad, but like Lola said, it tried to entertain too many age groups at once. Their either mellowed down some imp scenes or made them too melodramatic. And in Uttar Kand, they made Lakshman suicidal after he left Sita Ma in the forests.👎🏼
Only the scenes which featured Guru and Debi were watchable to be honest. They tweaked Ram and Sita's characters a bit too, but at least they didn't make them suicidal like Lakshman, and they made Kaikeyi heartless towards Bharat in this one scene where they all find out Lakshman was hit by Shakti, she calls him a stone or something along that line.
That's why, whenever I watch New Ramayan, I only watch the Guru-Debi featured scenes. Their chemistry was really good as Ram-Sita, so that made it watchable too. The rest of the actors I can do without, because many of the characters were very changed.

Yes, I get what you mean.😊
If you're looking for scripture authenticity, Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan, Shri Krishna, and BR Chopra's Mahabharat are your best sources. Ramanand Sagarji and Br Chopraji did a loooooot of research before taking their shows, and for them, things like technology, good clothing, grand sets, were not that imp because their storyline was untainted and they showed a lot of Bhakti yog and Karma Yog in them.
New Mythos today concentrate less on authenticity and more on entertainment and glossiness. Both AS Ramayan and JSK have their devotional moments (like Ram-Sita's Karva Chauth or Dhriti as Kanha in general), but most of these shows geared more to rake up TRPs than to teach the audience the correct story.
In the end of the day, they are mythos, so much better than normal soaps, and like I said, there were times when I saw RSji-like scenes (esp in new Ramayan) which I enjoyed and thought were sweet, but in general the old ones are much preferred if you want the true story. For New Ramayan, the plus points are mainly the sets, techonology, and Guru-Debi, while for JSK, the plus points are the settings they used for Gokul, and Dhriti as Kanha, but in general, the storyline was tweaked significantly.

@ Janu - dude you're killing me... you really picked out the best scenes in NDTV, didn't you 😆

@ Jhanvi - the Meera folks did 3 things so far - Jai Shri Krishna, Meera, and now that Sant one... Jai Shri Krishna was a remake of the show I mentioned - Shri Krishna - the links for which are at the beginning of this CC. The remake is nice, the main cast is adorable and really really talented - but again authenticity mein maar kha jaate hai - at least 40% of the stories are not from the books. We used to watch it really loyally when it was on, but it was like for every one episode that showed a main and author-backed event - for example Kaaliya Naag Mardhan - there were like 2 months of ?? 🤔 But there's plenty in it that encourages bhakti and is really feel-good, so worth watching chunks here and there. The old Shri Krishna is less glam but has both the authenticity and the bhakti bhaav you're looking for... so if you wanna wash the Ghor Paap of DMG outta your system 🤣 (as long as RM don't count in it, loved them 😛), Old Shri Krishna and Old Ramayan and Old MAhabharat will do it. But, you'll have to first make yourself comfy with that fav word of yours, asmanjas 😆
