Sarah... are you sure JKR has announced the 8th book, coz I would expect the newspapers as well as mugglenet to be flooded with the news now but there's nothing there...
Anu: I COMPLETELY agree with you said on the TRP business...
Actually this is why Indian tv can never reach that global standard as American television. Heck so many people watch Taiwanese and Korean soaps, I could hardly say the same about Indian soaps. The problem is most of the time the Indian audience fails to appreciate truly great shows like Rishta.com and yet will continue to watch the inane saas-bahu crap that Ekta produces. I mean seriously, the importance placed on the soap-opera over here is frightening, they're given the same level of importance and fanatacism as proper series would be given in the USA despite their horrible quality, cliched storylines and dragged out screenplays (most of the time). I mean in US soap-operas are usually placed on the not even LOW but one of the lowest-tiers of television... Not many people really watch 'The Bold and the Beautiful' as compared to watching a show like 'Lost' or 'Bones'. Here tho it's the opposite. Shows like Rishta.com get low trps, while all those ekta kapoor brands of misogynist shows get awesome trps.
Well, to be fair, I can't really blame the audience completely. Since most of them haven't been exposed to other better shows... This is the trend, and so most are reluctant to take a risk. Which is why I think Sony would be utterly stupid to not renew the YRF shows... Honestly, with the channel low trps from before, the new seasonal format, the different concept, did they really expect the shows to become a super-hit? On top of that, they shift timings of Rishta.com and place it at a deserted11 pm on Wednesday... Honestly, who actually watches TV at that time, yet alone a show which is targetted towards the young market. Plus, honestly, with their pathetic advertising its a surprise that people are aware of any of these shows at all.
Seriously on top of that, people need time to accept these shows... and if nobody in the Indian industry takes risks, or if channels which takes risks, like Sony, balk at the slightest notion of failure, then honestly I feel sorry for the general state of Indian television and the people who watch it, because barring few reality shows like DID and soaps like Balika Vadhu, it has never been AS stagnant.I know this sounds condescending but I can't help it. These people will never get to watch tv shows that are intellectually stimulating but ENTERTAINING as well. They'll never get to watch shows that gives them a different perspective to life but also makes them smile. They'll never get to watch shows which have different exotic concepts but also relatable. They'll never get to watch shows where the lead couples love is depicted in such a beautiiful, realistic and mature way, but with there chemistry is fire-cracking. They'll never get to watch shows which are truly witty and sarcastic but also funny. Honestly, at the end of the day, it's their loss. Incidentally, even shows like How I Met Your Mother were low-rated once upon a time, but its because the channel recognized the amazing quality in it and gave it that chance, it has reached cult-status and become actually one of the highest-watched shows on the channel.
Phew I'm done now. Sorry about that, I honestly didn't mean to go into such a longwinded rant. I guess I've a lot of pent-up frustration regarding this issue.
