(6) Please give your opinion about & interpretation of each & every single phrase of Geeta's following verses in the light of various characters & incidents of epics (Even any devotee outside epic like Narsinh Mehta or Meerabai or Surdas or Tulsidas) giving practical example when which devotee demonstrated which of the following trait.
Na prahyushet priyam praapyam, nodwijet praapya chaapriyam (Adhyay 5, Shlok 20)
To neither rejoice in the pleasant nor grumble about the unpleasant... Meerabai is an easy fit for this one, as is Kabir. To such elevated saints, palaces and prisons were one and the same, they had no qualms about their near-death experiences at the hands of the doubtful. This is precisely why I was upset with what they often showed in the recent serial Meera; it started out really well but then when they soap-ified it like everything else, Meera actually started caring and crying over her own misfortunes... that's not the Meerabai I know and love π The Maharishi Garg dialogues we've discussed extensively over at Orkut are also relevant in light of this shlok, especially the one prior to Kans's wedding that redefines welfare - knowing the finite nature of the unpleasant experiences that are about to hit Mathura and unpleasant experiences in general, he doesn't have any issues with them.
Adhyay 12 Shlok 17 to 19
Yo na hrushyati na dweshti, na shochati na kaankshati;
Shubhaashubh parityaagi, bhaktimaanyah sa me priyah.
Kumbhkarn comes to mind when thinking about this shlok - his initial victories over the Vanar Sena don't pump him up because he knows how it's going to end, and despite that foreknowledge he he has no grief or fear. He is simply following his dharma as he understands it, which is the best anyone can do unless God explicitly tells them otherwise. As Meghnaad's farewell song says, "ab haar jeet ka prashn nahin, jo bhi hoga achha hoga"... there was no shubh-ashubh left to worry about, he went in with the intention of outwardly fulfilling his social duties and inwardly fulfilling his spiritual one - that is, surrendering himself to the Self... so no harash, no shok, just purpose and fulfillment.
Samah shatrau cha mitre cha, tatha maanaapmaanayoho;
Sheetoshna sukh dukheshu, Samah sangavivarjitah.
The samah shatrau, I think, lends itself to misinterpretation quite easily. As pointed out by some of my gora friends in my philosophy seminar, this might make it even harder for Arjun to fight tha Kauravs... isn't he supposed to treat them like he treats his friends π So, I feel Shri Ram's acceptance-of-Vibhishan speech gives a better understanding of what is meant in this shlok... "agar swayam Ravan bhi yahaan aaya sharan maangne to main usse bhi apnaaunga"... it is again meant for specific situations/behaviors, like for example extending refuge or hospitality or appreciating someone's good qualities... or, even better, hiring/electing/promoting someone. Of course in the Ram-Vaali and Pandav-Kaurav situation the enemy had to be treated differently than a friend because justice had to be administered, but in other situations like the ones listed above, simply liking/disliking a person shouldn't factor into our judgment and behavior.
As for the rest of the shlok, it works on Meera, Kabir, Ramanuja, etc as did the first one because these true saints aren't moved by praise/insult/heat/cold/pain/pleasure etc. Even a guick little literal example of this just came to mind - Shamik Rishi, whose son's curse led Parikshit to his death and indirectly his salvation. He neither physically felt that snake around his neck for which his son administered the curse, nor did he care after he found out. That's the power of yog!
And the last bit about sanga - for that, our fav Vibhishan is a great example. Even the honor/dishonor part actually. So engrossed in Ram-naam that the bad company he was it never touched him, even amidst them he was apart from them. And their daily insults didn't bother him either... if we take my fan fiction on him as fact, then he was like that right from childhood π
Tulyanindaa stutirmauni, santushto yen kenchit;
Aniketah sthirmatirbhaktimaan me priyo narah.
Who better to exemplify this shlok than Hanumanji! At Ravan's court, he was repeatedly called a foolish monkey... did he care? No! When he got back to Angad and company, and eventually Shri Ram, he was glorified even more repeatedly... did it get to his head? No! Content he certainly was; despite being more qualified than Sugreev, he served him loyally and had no desire to rule the kingdom or any other himself. Aniketah... without a home... I interpret this as proactive and not lazy, you know like ghar hi nahin hai to ghar mein baithke buddhu kaise rahenge π so it applies to him perfectly as well, or else flying to Lanka one second and Dronagiri parvat the next in order to fulfill his missions would not be possible. Sthir-mati... "tumse hai kapi dharm pratishtha, upama-heen tumhaari nishtha"... determination doesn't get any more fixed than his! It is so solid that it is contagious; the entire vaanar sena was motivated by it... "heri thake tat Sindhu sabay tab laaye Siya sudhi praan ubaaro". Bhaktimaan doesn't even require explanation, I doubt anyone would argue against his being an ideal devotee. Even the "me priyo" applies literally, the only criteria he misses is the "narah" part since he is Mahadev himself π
Is it possible to behave in same way in winter & summer through complete meditation & mental involvement? How can it just be a mental state issue when your skin also physically comes into some contact of different objects?
Biologically, the reactions are prompted not at the skin level but by receptors in the brain - drop an ice cube on someone who's in a coma and they're not going to respond, even though their skin is working just fine, as the problem's in their brain - so yes, it's possible. Ever been with a little kid afraid of a doctor's injection? You distract them with some toys/tv/funny noises and before they know it, it's over! I think meditation works the same way, by fixing our mind on something - preferably God - we can lose track of the heat/cold/pain/pleasure/etc quite easily. My favorite representation of this is (you guessed it) VasuDevaki in their adorable pre-SojaLalla conversation; they're so lost in Krishna that their grim surroundings and iron shackles seem to have been completely forgotten π
Try to put yourself in 'Tulyanindaastutirmauni' criteria in 1 to 10 scale in the context of the feeling that you get when someone criticizes you (anyone around your life) and feeling that you get when someone praises your nature, knowledge, virtues, talent (Like you say "It means a lot" when somebody praises your siggies creations).
Lol thanks a lot bhaiya for putting me on the spot bhaiya π‘ π j/k... I'd say a 4 because though the praise doesn't really get to my head (you can't inflate an ego-meter that's already permanently on full... j/k π)... seriously though, it's because I always have my own weaknesses in mind so I consider the praise uninformed and brush it off. Criticism does make me uneasy though, because then I add it to my list of weaknesses in my mind and until I've fixed the problem, I'm not at ease. So, since it works as a motivator towards self-improvement, I don't think it's entirely a bad thing. When I get to the point where there's nothing left to fix, then I'll adopt tulya-ninda-stuti more faithfully π³
I have already got the answer from Gunia's question of 'IMPATIENCE' characteristic which you want to change in you and that I knew otherwise also so I am keeping it out now from my Geeta questions applicable to your self awareness test π.ππ
Thanks for sparing me, then π
(7) You said to Gunia that you don't believe in LUCK but only in Karma. Please throw some light over the verse 14 of Adhyay 18 of Geeta (Quoted right in the end) and the dialog by Shri Ram to Lakshman - "Daiv ki sahaayata par bharosa karna na kaayarta hai, na aalasya.. Dekho manushya ke paas keval shakti karma karne ki hai. Karma ka phal eeshwaraadheen hai".
What is the difference between LUCK, DESTINY & KARMPHAL in your eyes? The concept of LUCK means something that happens in our life (situations which we confront) randomly which can be altered by our devotion & God's grace (for example when there is no previous birth or karmas in the first ever birth in Satyug) or according to Janmkundali (Grahdasha - which may be according to our previous birth karma) which can't be altered by any means but devotion & knowledge can only give us the strength to tolerate or ignore it? When you said to Gunia that you believe in Karma only and not in 'luck', did you mean that you don't depend upon luck or did you mean that you don't believe in the existence of such element in the world like 'luck'?
The verse is:
ADHISTHAANAM tatha kartaa, karanam cha pruthagvidham;
Vividhaashcha pruthak cheshtaa, DAIVAM chaivaatra panchamam.
Ever heard the following story?:
God Will Save Me A big storm approaches. The weatherman urges everyone to get out of town. The priest says, "I won't worry, God will save me".So yes, I said what I said because I don't believe in sitting back and relying on luck. But also, because of the randomness it conventionally implies, it goes against my beliefs - unless it can be defined differently. I believe that God does everything for a reason - if it's not an earned karm-phal, then it is a test of character by which true bhakts can be identified. If it's not a test, then the true bhakt has already been identified and is being used as an example for others to follow (like what I've often said about... you know who π). So, that rules out the randomness implied by luck... destiny is a product of Karm, I think it is synonymous with or at least analogous to karm-phal. It's inescapable, but if we had the ability to view or past actions we'd be able to attribute it to them... so again, not random. Everything happens for a reason.
The morning of the storm, the police go through the neighborhood with a sound truck telling everyone to evacuate. The priest says "I won't worry, God will save me".
The storm drains back up and there is an inch of water standing in the street. A fire truck comes by to pick up the priest. He tells them "Don't worry, God will save me."
The water rises another foot. A National Guard truck comes by to rescue the priest. He tells them "Don't worry, God will save me."
The water rises some more. The priest is forced up to his roof. A boat comes by to rescue the priest. He tells them "Don't worry, God will save me."
The water rises higher. The priest is forced up to the very top of his roof. A helicopter comes to rescue the priest. He shouts up at them "Don't worry, God will save me."
The water rises above his house, and the priest drowns.
When he gets up to heaven he says to God "I've been your faithful servant ever since I was born! Why didn't you save me?"
God replies "First I sent you a fire truck, then the national guard, then a boat, and then a helicopter. What more do you want from me!!??"
This is how I believe Daiv factors into the equation. We can't sit around and wait for luck to come upon us; ishaaron ko samajhke aage badhna chahiye. Because I just can't help myself, I'll cite Vasuji again. He initially considered honesty his first priority, but once Garg's revelation made him aware of the direction of Daiv's intentions, he put everything else including his life on the line to follow that direction. God will show us the road, but we do have to walk on it!

10. You have won a prize. The prize has two options, and you can choose either (but not both). The first option is a year in Europe with a monthly stipend of $2,000. The second option is ten minutes on the moon.
Which option do you select?
the money cuz I'm afraid of heights
11. Your best friend is taking a nap on the floor of your living room. Suddenly, you are faced with a bizarre existential problem: This friend is going to die unless you kick them (as hard as you can) in the rib cage. If you don't kick them while they slumber, they will never wake up. However, you can never explain this to your friend; if you later inform them that you did this to save their life, they will also die from that. So you have to kick a sleeping friend in the ribs, and you can't tell them why.
Since you cannot tell your friend the truth, what excuse will you fabricate to explain this (seemingly inexplicable) attack?
Make them feel guilty, act like they said something dirty/mean in their sleep..... "ewww how could you say something like that!" π
12. For whatever the reason, two unauthorized movies are made about your life. The first is an independently released documentary, primarily comprised of interviews with people who know you and bootleg footage from your actual life. Critics are describing the documentary as "brutally honest and relentlessly fair." Meanwhile, Columbia Tri-Star has produced a big-budget biopic of your life, casting major Hollywood stars as you and all your acquaintances; though the movie is based on actual events, screenwriters have taken some liberties with the facts. Critics are split on the artistic merits of this fictionalized account, but audiences love it.
Which film would you be most interested in seeing? the fiction... I already know the facts, they're pretty bland... lets see what can be done with them to make them entertaining π
13. You are sitting in an empty bar (in a town you've never before visited), drinking Bacardi with a soft-spoken acquaintance you barely know. After an hour, a third individual walks into the tavern and sits by himself, and you ask your acquaintance who the new man is. "Be careful of that guy," you are told. "He is a man with a past." A few minutes later, a fourth person enters the bar; he also sits alone. You ask your acquaintance who this new individual is. "Be careful of that guy, too," he says. "He is a man with no past."
Which of these two people do you trust less? the second guy... wouldn't be certain about anything with him
14. You have a brain tumor. Though there is no discomfort at the moment, this tumor would unquestionably kill you in six months. However, your life can (and will) be saved by an operation; the only downside is that there will be a brutal incision to your frontal lobe. After the surgery, you will be significantly less intelligent. You will still be a fully functioning adult, but you will be less logical, you will have a terrible memory, and you will have little ability to understand complex concepts or difficult ideas. The surgery is in two weeks.
How do you spend the next fourteen days? playing with kids, getting used to it
15. For reasons that cannot be explained, cats can suddenly read at a twelfth-grade level. They can't talk and they can't write, but they can read silently and understand the text. Many cats love this new skill, because they now have something to do all day while they lay around the house; however, a few cats become depressed, because reading forces them to realize the limitations of their existence (not to mention the utter frustration of being unable to express themselves).
This being the case, do you think the average cat would enjoy Garfield, or would cats find this cartoon to be an insulting caricature? lolz they'd prob prefer a different fictional cat... Garfield, not so much
16. Let us assume you met a rudimentary magician. Let us assume he can do five simple tricks--he can pull a rabbit out of his hat, he can make a coin disappear, he can turn the ace of spades into the Joker card, and two others in a similar vein. These are his only tricks and he can't learn any more; he can only do these five. HOWEVER, it turns out he's doing these five tricks with real magic. It's not an illusion; he can actually conjure the bunny out of the ether and he can move the coin through space. He's legitimately magical, but extremely limited in scope and influence.
Would this person be more impressive than Albert Einstein?nope, Einstein wins... what good are these tricks next to less mystifying skills that can actually help people!
