Chapter 12
The ride to Nubhra valley and back was long, tiring and uneventful. The scene was a goddamned gift from heaven and the double hunched camels quite fun to ride, but other than that, it was nothing else. The bike ride of eight hours had left them all exhausted and no one bothered to gather together. Everyone settled into their respective rooms.
In all this Rey grew frustrated. The journey was about to end and he had barely any progress in the whole Tani issue. He had to act fast upon it, he had been trying to man up and do it for the past couple of days and now he was done with the stress. He decided to just do it and not think of repercussions.
In the evening, when everyone had gone to their respective rooms, Rey stayed in the hotel lobby in the lounge area. He called up Tani, asking her to meet him and waited impatiently tapping his feet on the concrete floor.
It took her about five minutes to get down but Rey could have sworn it felt like ages. When she did come down, she eyed him with confusion. "What is going on Rey?" she asked, seating herself on the sofa beside Rey.
"I wanted to talk to you... for a long time," he said. Pause.
"About," Tani encouraged him to go on.
"Just... you know... I was thinking..." Rey's throat felt parched like paper, and his mind was nothing but huge beep in his ears. "You know... in college..." he studied Tani warily, who still looked out of depth, "we... we had... fun."
"Yes, for most part," she replied slowly. "Where are you getting with this Rey?"
Are you acting dumb or did I misinterpret you? Rey bit back the comment. "I... just... our... our breakup," he stumbled, not quite finding the right words but feeling like if he didn't get something out, he would just explode.
"What about it?"
"It was... it was just so... sudden. Don't you think? It was unexpected. I mean we never really got to discussing things out, talking about it." Rey explained. He didn't why he was beating around the bush. "I mean we didn't get any closure."
"Closure?" Tani repeated.
"Yes... and without that... closure... how do you move on?"
Tani grimaced, "What do you mean, Rey? Move on? Don't you think it's been a long time to let it still affect you?"
"I agree, but... how do you really know that you're over me?" he tried.
"I do... I know I am," she confirmed. Rey's heart sank and he already knew things were going to go downhill from here. "And so have you... I mean... you're getting married, aren't you?"
"Yes, yes I am," he muttered spontaneously. "But that really doesn't mean I never think about you anymore."
"Why do you think about me, Rey? We lasted for barely six months and the end... it was a stretch, if you remember." Tani recalled.
"To be honest," Rey admitted, "ours was the longest relationship I have had so..."
"Rey," Tani exclaimed, looking alarmed, "you can't say you miss me when you are about to start a future with your best friend. What would Sharon think?"
"If you and I got back together?" Rey asked with a nonchalant demeanour, "She would be thrilled, I am sure of that."
"Whoa!" Tani got up, "Get back together? Rey, I don't want to get back together. I have in all seriousness moved on."
"What?"
"Yes," she shot back incredulously, "I mean the crush I had over you was... was... what? Five years ago? Five? That's a long time, Rey. I don't think that way about you anymore. In fact..." Tani abruptly ended, staring at Rey with wide eyes.
"What?" he asked her, getting up to face her who wouldn't look him in the eye, "In fact what, Tani?"
Tani took a huge breath in, "In fact," she repeated with slightly wavering tone, "I think I am in love with Govind."
Rey gaped at her, trying to process the information. He... he honestly hadn't noticed any signs of that since he had come to Ladakh. Govind?
"You...you're pranking me, right? I mean..." Rey scrunched his eyebrows together, trying hard to process the information and not snapping in two.
"Rey, it's real. My feelings are real," Tani repeated firmly.
"I can't believe it," he muttered to himself. "You," he looked at Tani with disbelief, "you... you actually moved on."
"What are you-"
"Till this day I kept blaming myself for everything between us blowing out; I kept thinking how things would have been different if you had stayed and you... you went ahead and forgot all about me."
"Rey... you're not-"
"How? How could you do that to me?" Rey snapped, cutting her words. "I was so bloody stupid to think anything could happen," he felt like running away and never see her face again but something in him couldn't stop blurting out everything. It was like some sort of a gate had opened which he hadn't allowed in the past five years and no matter how much he tried, it just won't close. "And you... there must have been more after me?"
"I don't believe you," Tani exclaimed, frustrated. She wanted to say something but she was again cut by Rey, "You know what? I am done. I'm done with you. I did a good thing breaking up with you back in college. Thank you, thank you very much for making me realise I had done the right thing; that I don't need to regret anything."
He stormed past her.
"Rey, you're being so hypocritical," she screamed, running after him and pulling his arm to face her. "You don't want me to move on but you are about to get married. How could you expect that-"
"I don't care," he shouted, yanking his arm out of her grip. "I don't care about what you have got to say."
"That is the very reason we broke up," Tani stated coolly. "Because you never cared what I had got to say. You would never hear my side of story, you always wanted to decide everything for me. Back then, you tried to decide my career for me and now you're trying to impose your decision on my life?"
"What's the point? When did you take my advice anyway?" he retorted.
"Why should I?" she yelled back. "It is my life, my career, my feelings," he voice amplified with each syllable. "You don't get to decide anything. And you know what? That's where you and Govind are different. He listens to me, pays attention to what I want."
Rey didn't know what to say so he stood glaring at her, desperately praying that the tears pooling in his eyes won't fall. Tani's eyes were dry, and so he bit on the back of his mouth trying to control his tears.
"You messes up our relationship, please don't do that to Sharon, please," she told him.
"You may go to hell," he spit at her before turning away and storming up with aggression.

"What are you doing?" Swayam asked Rey. Rey had banged the door open, stormed into the room and had started collecting his stuff off of the table, chair, bed, everywhere.
"Leaving," Rey replied briskly, "There's no way I'm staying here for one more minute."
"Why? What happened?" Swayam jumped off his bed looking alarmed.
"Just check the room before leaving okay?" Rey took out his bag and unzipped it, stuffing everything inside, "In case I have dropped something somewhere. Pass it to Sharon, she will give it back to me."
"Rey, Rey stop," Swayam grabbed Rey's shoulder and made him turn. "What happened Rey? What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I have lost interest in this tour, and I have some work at the office," Rey replied, grunting out each word.
"You couldn't possibly drive back at this time. It's already night, it's too dangerous," Swayam tried reasoning with him, "look, we'll be leaving tomorrow anyway. Just stay, we'll all leave together."
"Sorry that's not happening," Rey snapped at him.
A knock on the door made both of them stop. "Rey?" Sharon's voice called him, "Should I come in?"
Rey took a sharp breath, sighed and opened the door. Sharon entered the room noticing the disarray. She saw Swayam watching her warily while Rey stared at the ground looking disgruntled.
"What's going on?" Sharon inquired. She had really just wanted to pass time, just talk. Tani had been gone for a long time and as far Sharon was concerned, so was Sameera. She had passed out on the bed. Sharon had come over to their room to have a chat when she heard all the noises from the other side of the door.
She watched both of them, waiting for an answer. Nothing.
"Rey," she commanded.
"Rey wants to leave," Swayam announced.
"What?" Sharon's head snapped to him, "Why?" When Rey wouldn't look at her, she walked over to stand right in front of him. "What happened?"
"Nothing," he growled. Sharon stared at him, feeling more anxious with the minute. She finally turned to Swayam, silently asking him to leave. Fortunately, he got the hint, nodded and walked out.
"Rey?" Sharon asked again, her voice kinder, more concerned than alarmed.
He closed his eyes, contorted as though in pain. Pacing around he looked everywhere with wild eyes, "Where is it?"
"What?"
"Where..." he angrily rummaged in his bag, "Where..." Finally, he froze and extracted a dark glass bottle. Uncorking it with a multi-purpose knife, he took a huge gulp from it, and crouched down on the bed, cradling the bottle between his legs.
"What happened Rey?"
"Nothing happened," he replied, "That is the whole issue, nothing happened. All this, for nothing," he shouted bitterly.
Sharon placed a hand on his shoulder which Rey grabbed as though on reflex.
"A lot happened Sharon," he said so quiet she almost didn't catch it, "Everything changed."
