Chapter 10
"What do you mean I won't get a bike?" Sharon shouted at the manager, making him jump slightly in his chair.
"Look ma'am," he started slowly just to be interrupted by Sharon who shouted, "This is ridiculous. This is sexist, you guys are bloody chauvinists. Why won't I get a bike, because I am a female? You are going down, mister."
"Er, Sharon," Raghav lightly tugged on her sleeve. Sharon leaned towards him who whispered in her ear, "He said you can't rent a bike because you don't have your driving license with you."
"I was never told I had to bring my license," Sharon screamed at Raghav's ear who scrambled back with a scared expression. Rey patted his shoulder in empathy, "I told you it's a lost cause." Sharon turned to the manager, "Listen mister, if I say I have a license, it means I bloody have a license. So you better get me a bike or..."
"Ma'am, rules are rules. I can't rent you a bike," everyone present there, including Sharon, commended the manager for staying calm when someone was screaming his ears off.
"You say that one more time," she threatened him.
"Sharon," finally Swayam interrupted, "just sit on someone's rear seat. We would all be paired up in that case."
"I am not going anywhere unless I get a bike all by myself," Sharon stated, crossing her hands across her chest.
"Fine," Rey shrugged his shoulders, "let's leave Sharon here and go to Nubhra valley, let's go." He pretended to get up and leave but stopped halfway, "Come on Sharon. Just adjust a little?"
Sharon scowled at the ground, this was not fair. She wanted to bike all on her own. Wasn't a girl allowed to get such a simple request fulfilled?
"Oh God," she heard someone groan behind her. She knew she didn't make any sense but she really wanted to do that. She really enjoyed biking alone, and biking up mountains was something she had dreamt about for so long. It would be so badass to be biking up a mountain dressed in black and stuff. She had a brilliant image in her head and it was getting shattered.
"Fine," she said, with a lump in her throat. "Fine I'll partner Rey."
Multiple people muttered, "Oh, finally,", "at last," "Thank God", and "she's crazy".
"Or," she turned to Swayam, "we could wait for a day till she arranges her driving license from back home," he said, to everyone's groan, while Sharon's hope sparked a bit. He ignored everyone else and turned to the manager, "Will a soft copy of her license do?"
"Okay," he replied calmly, "but I will require a proof of ID, original document."
"Will my ID card from office work?" Sharon asked immediately.
"Does it have your address?"
"Yes," she replied eagerly. The man shrugged, "well then, we will use that."
"So that's it, then. We'll wait for a day. Let's tour Ladakh for a bit," Swayam announced.

"Hey, I have a question," Sharon overheard Raghav asked Govind, a few steps ahead of her, "what happens if I turn the prayer wheel in anticlockwise direction?"
"If you turn it in clockwise, you wishes come true. Maybe if you turn it in anticlockwise, your wishes become false. Like if I turn it anticlockwise and wish that you have brilliant hair, you will go bald," a beat of silence, "let's try it." Govind rushed to one prayer wheel as Raghav whacked him in the head and stormed away stamping his feet. Shikhar snorted and patted Govind, "I am pretty sure you wouldn't wish for that."
"And why's that?"
"Because then everyone would know what you will look like if you were bald," Shikhar replied shrugging his shoulders. "Think about it." He left Govind, pondering over it.
Sharon couldn't help but adore this little group. Something about them reminded her of what her college should have been like instead of what it actually was like. She hated her college life in St. Louis. As she ambled a foot behind Tani, strolling into one temple and another, it felt... good. The cool tiles beneath her bare feet, the tranquillity of the surroundings.
Flash.
Sharon blinked and snapped her head, "Swayam?" He turned to look at her, looking embarrassed. "Sorry, I hadn't expected flash to go off."
So was he taking her photograph without her knowledge? Sharon didn't know how she felt about that. She didn't want to comment on it but she didn't want Swayam to feel embarrassed. So she changed the topic. She smiled, "Thanks for convincing everyone to wait for a day."
"Huh? Oh no," he shook his head, "that's okay, we planned to tour these places sometime anyway so... Besides, I would've done that for anyone."
Sharon frowned, "I don't doubt you would," she said slowly, "but it's still nice. Thank you."
Swayam smiled ducking his head down, still looking uneasy. He glanced up at her, "Why are you walking alone?"
Sharon shrugged, "Just. I mean, it's nice to be able to stay alone for a change and... not feel lonely."
Swayam's smile shifted to grimace, "Why do you feel lonely?" he asked.
No, no. That's not what she was supposed to say. "No," Sharon frantically shook her head, abort, abort, this conversation did not need to go there, "No, that's not what I meant. It's just nice here, feels good. That's it."
Swayam shrugged, "Okay."
Sharon paused for a bit, waiting for him to say something. Nothing. Say something, Sharon, think! "Er... do you mind if I see those pictures?" Sharon asked him pointing to his camera.
"Sure," Swayam replied but he looked a bit uncertain, chagrined. "Actually, I'm not really that good at photography so..."
"You're an investment banker, Shekhawat," Sharon laughed, punching his arm, "you could have two heads still people will find you attractive."
"I see," he muttered. And there it was, the tension. Sharon didn't know where it came from, but she was really tired of Swayam's switching moods.
Sharon started to speak but was cut off by Sameera calling out, "Swayam, take a picture." Sharon turned to see Sameera, Tani and Rey sitting on a platform. Swayam turned to them and for the rest of the tour, completely tuned Sharon out and she didn't bother trying to ask him why again.
***
They had lunch in a restaurant on the gate of the monastery. The restaurant was a cosy one having a similar ambience as the monastery, with a huge painting of Buddha on one side of the wall and of Dalai Lama on the other.
Sharon seated herself between Rey and Shikhar. Sharon saw Rey taking a seat right beside Tani and she couldn't help but feel a little bit smug. She had seen Rey chatting up to her and Sameera all the way in the monastery, and the expressions he made while talking to them, she could sense he was channelling the iconic Reyansh Singhania charm.
But what she also noticed was that Govind pointedly left a seat beside Swayam and took one next to Tani whereas though Raghav sat beside Swayam, he refused to even look at him. Or was it simply that Raghav was in a conversation with on the other side of the table. Boy, she really needed to stop this. Law college had actually left her all observant and suspicious.
"Sharon, you got noodles in your hair," Rey said, interrupting her thoughts.
"What?"
"Noodles," Rey repeated before picking the thread of noodle from her hair.
"Oh, god," Sharon groaned, grabbing few tissues and wiping her hair of sauce.
"Hey, I have a suggestion for you," Rey said, "why don't you just feed your mouth." Sharon saw a smirk stretch on his face.
"Aww, look at you," Sharon cooed, "Finally good sarcasm and you're so happy!" Sharon pinched his cheek.
"You two make such an adorable couple," Sameera commented.
"Yeah," Govind interrupted, "tell us. When are you getting married, by the way?" he asked pointedly.
"We... haven't decided yet...," Sharon stammered, "but... you know... soon." Sharon tried to keep the answer as vague as possible. She was still rooting for Rey and Tani and she hoped that happened because that would make Rey incredibly happy and her relieved, that she didn't have to marry her best friend. God... that would definitely feel like incest. She still had questions as to why she was going through with this idea.
"Soon, huh," Govind repeated with a huge smile.
Sharon noticed Swayam stab a piece of cutlet with unusually more force. Swayam didn't speak a word for the rest of lunch.
***
Swayam took a deep breath in and knocked on the door, praying Govind doesn't smack the door shut on his face. But when Govind opened the door, he kept it wide open and stared at Swayam with a blank stare. Swayam noticed Raghav sprawled on the bed but slowly get to his feet and shuffle out of the room. Swayam waited for Raghav to move out, only to build his nerves.
"So..." Swayam announced so loudly, it made him want to cringe. He cleared his voice and said in an octave lower, "Sharon got her license's copy. Could you call the rentals and tell them to keep the bikes ready for tomorrow?"
"Yeah, sure," Govind replied with a shrug and grabbed his phone on the study table. Swayam waited there awkwardly as Govind discussed regarding timing and schedule. Once he swiped the phone shut, he turned around to see Swayam still standing on the doorway.
"Anything else? Can I help you?" Govind questioned him coldly.
"I... uh..." Swayam cleared his throat, trying to get rid of the lump. "I'm sorry... for this morning. I was... I was way out of line."
"Yes, you were," he answered coolly.
"So... will you forgive me? I didn't mean anything against you," Swayam glanced at him full of hope.
"That's...," Govind sighed, "that's okay really...but" he paused, not wanting to speak the rest but Swayam called out, "but?" and he felt he could handle Swayam being angry with him for a couple of days instead of being heartbroken for months. "Isn't she the girl you liked back in college?"
Swayam nodded, knowing full well where it was headed; a blind monkey would understand where it was headed.
"But it's not the way you think. It was just this stupid crush," he said, hoping he sounded more confident than he felt. "It was ages ago... and I have grown up since then. I am really sorry to have shouted on you. I don't think that way about you, I don't. I was just frustrated, that's all."
Govind narrowed his eyes, "So... there's nothing. You promise you don't feel a thing for her," he repeated looking suspicious.
"Nothing," he pronounced clearly, over the lump lodged in his throat that just wouldn't go down.
