Chapter 20

Chandragupt announces that he is expecting his first child from Nandini. The entire Magadh rejoiced upon hearing the news. Helena and Durdhara though they are co wives of Nandini by relation they were free from any jealousy .Both of them happy that they are going to become mother of Chandra's child. All they wanted to do the best for Nandini and her child.

After some months
Nandini is now 5 months pregnant. This were supposed to be joyous time for any new parents,but fate had other plans with Nandini. She passed through lot of mental uproar all these days which any words cannot explain. The moment Chandragupt declared the news of her pregnancy,Nand waged a war on Magadh. It was quiet clear that he started treating Nandini as his enemy's wife more than his Daughter.It goes without saying that Chandra was triumphant in this battle,but the old man was too vile to be captured. Chandragupt averted the fate through help of Malyaketu's timely interference. As a token of respect,Malyaketu was gifted with rich plains of Gangetic doab . But, he insisted that he wants only Chaya and he was ready to become father for her child. Chaya was married with all pomp and fanfare. She is now happily settled in Parvartak Rajya.

Again after some time a rebellion broke out at remote place of Hindukush mountain. Helena and Chandra curbed it in matter of a month.
On the other hand,Nandini was becoming emotionally fragile. Her mental state was in a bad shape, which everybody mistook as a pregnancy side effect. To cap it,she overheard Moora discussing astrological predcition of Chandragupt becoming a sanyas. She spoke it with Avantika without any hint of Nandini 's presence. Nandini could not bare this news,and her child happens to be the reason of it. She resorted to abort the baby by taking some medicine .She was caught while doing so,by Durdhara. Moora and all others were shocked. They allayed her fears, but she was deeply affected with it.Nothing more could be done so Moora ensured that Nandini was never left alone, .

Chandragupt upon hearing all these happenings,he broke down . He shared his mental burden with Durdhara.Durdhara is a sweet person. Cleverly explained him,the precarious situation of Nandini. Still he was unsure.
"Durdahra,why my life is so complicated. I regret being a king.."
Durdhara with affectionate eyes took a apple . She was cutting into pieces and"What Complication. I dont see any thing ... Problem is that yours and Her background is preventing both of you to live normal life.You have somewhere failed to be a good husband. She is feeling insecured with you.

Chandra unbelieving her " What do you say... I am unfair to you only... Not with her.. It is you who must have felt unsafe. Not the other way around.. "
Durdhara spoke between gulping apple "Neither I feel jealous nor I have any doubts on you. First you are my friend. then conjugal relation comes. You will be the last person to betray me. Nandini is too good. Because of her father she is not trusting anyone . Her parents have kept her in dark all these days.. What makes me worried is whether she can be a good mother.

Chandra holding her hands" I dont know about her.. I am sure that you will be my child's guardian angel"
"Thanks Chandra,by the way go to her. You have not seen her after you came back from the tour. it has been 3 days. She is nagging me.. I have lied that you have gone to Shivpuri for some work.
Chandra "Durdhara.. you always play messenger role... Why dont you feel possessive over me..

Durdhara chuckled" I cant.. When you are always mine,why should I bother about other insane things.. Life is short,make it beautiful... Jealousy leads nowhere. I am happy for you.. At least she made you a father..
Chandra embraced her in a deep embrace. He swooped down and kissed her pasionately. Both of them were in same position for some time.
Durdhara broke from him
"reserve some for her too. Else Nandini will eat my brains.. "Whispered Durdahra.
She handed him some sweets she made for Nandini.
"Dont say,that I made.. give as though you bought for her... It will help you in reducing her anger"
"I wonder what did you learn in Takshashila... Chandra.. you are so hopeless in handling wives. I think "

Chapter 21
Chandragupt "Durdhara... Thanks for the sweets... Does she crave for sweets."
Durdhara gave a angry look"Nandini,is not my wife... She is your wife.. I want to ask you one question. Without ever knowing anything about each other how did you both come together... Common Chandra you and Nandini is always a riddle to me.. I have seen you both fighting in morning and romancing in nights... Now you are going to be parents... God save us... I am sure.. I have to take care of the baby. You are a samrat and Nandini herself is a small kid.. Krishna give me patience..."
Chandra screwed her ear"Look who is saying... Wait... One day I have to settle score with you"...
Durdhara left a pearl of laughter. Chandra went to Nandini 's room.
He beheld Nandini listening to Courtesan playing veena.Raga was Shyama... And composition was "Manasa Sanachare"...the meaning goes "

He waited for sometime . Nandini was deeply involved in the song. Tears was flowing from her eyes. After song was complete, Nandini happened to see him .

"Maharaj.."Nandini got up from her seat. Courtesan too bowed her head for Chandra.He addressed to Courtesan" YOu played the veena very well. Keep this as reward. I wan you to come daily and play ragas which brings happiness in my wife's mind. "
Courtesan accepted his order and went of.

Chandra took Nandini's hand and made her lie in the bed.He placed his hand on her baby bump and "What is my princess doing.. Are you angry with me.. Iam sorry dear ,I had to go to attend lots of work. Your papa is a King... I swear I will see and talk to you daily from now on wards. Look I bought you some sweets which your badi ma Durdahra gave. Will you like to have.. Wait I will give to your mother." He put a piece of sweet in Nandini's mouth.

Nandini seems to be drowned in that"Wow,Durdhara makes fantastic food. You know yesterday Helena gave me a exotic juice from Greece. I liked it. She promised me to get more soon"

Chandra was quiet peaceful after seeing how much care Nandini gets from his other wives.

Nandini "Chandra,this baby is very troublesome. Always I am feel like vomiting . Just like you,he gets on my nerves. Had I known earlier that having a child is this much difficult, I could have never ever allowed you to touch me..

Chandra started to laugh . He was laughing for some time and "Look,who is saying this.. remember you used to gatecrash to my chamber asking why you avoid me..I am feeling lonely...

Nandini became blushful.Chandra was in no mood to stop"I clearly remember how did you took lead night before Vasanh utsav.

Nandini"How I wished everything goes back to how it originally was".She hinted about all the recent developments.

Chandra "Nandini, What has to happen ..has happened.. Due to some truth we got into trouble. Never mind my baby turned everything back to normal.

Nandini was happy . "Chandra, next month there is going to be Garbsanskar function for me. Will you attend it?

Chandra " Yes.. Why do you ask strange question. Meanwhile,Chaya will also be delivering her baby by this month end.Nandini do you remember ,someone attacked me in broad daylight.It was masterminded by tribals who took Nand's side. We vanquished them also.
Nandini" Chandra... I don't trust my father... He will attack us whenever he could. He is very dangerous out there.I am apprehensive that he may harm our child.

Chandra" May be you are right... He is spatting venoms of revenge. I am here dont worry. Without my knowledge dont even go to Krishna temple.

Nandini" yes Chandra.. I am actually continuously watched. Daily morning Moora ma comes and makes me listen Ramayan. Then My ma comes and makes me eat .. Inbetween Durdhara... I am totally entangled.

Chandra gave a laughter "iNclude me in those list.. You are too dangerous when left alone..."

Nandini smiled and her eyes caught a mark on Chandra's neck. She immediately asked "Whose job is that Durdhara or Helena"pointing to love bite

Chandra got somewhat shocked and he hurriedly said "Durdhara".This question made him uncomfortable for a minute. "Nandini.. its getting late.. sleep now "Nandini was delighted to see him caring so much for her.Chandra then made nandini to sleep, he too slept on her side . But he was unable to sleep. Yes he spoke a lie,that too to his pregnant wife.
Early morning he left the room before Nandini woke up.He felt very difficult to face her,for that matter any of his wives. He left the chamber . But time had another plan

When Nandini met Durdhara . She thanked for the sweets which she herself prepared for Nandini.

"Durdhara... Anything special.. "

Durdhara " What .. Nothing of that sort"

Nandini"Common,tell me...see I will not mistake you dear.. you are also his wife . let me repeat I saw marks in Chandra's neck..

Durdhara "No no..its not me.. I cannot do that for another 2 days.yesterday just we had some talks.. nothing more than that".. She indicated that she was in her monthly cycle.

Nandini"Oh I see, then It must be Helena".

Durdhara" No Nandini,Helena has gone with Acharya to Sharavasti 2 days ago.. I dont know Why Chandra used my name... He is mad...May be he must have bruised while wearing jewels.

Nandini too accepted the fact that it must have been jewels. But these wives of Chandragupt does not know that these days he is been visiting a girl in outskirts of Pataliputra.The girl's name is Vrishali, whom he once saved from Nand's hand. When Nand escaped his hands from battlefield, he followed him. The old Nand kidnapped an unsuspecting girl as hostage to free him from Chandra. But Chandra somehow saved the girl and Nand escaped into forest. The girl invited him for a tea in her house. Soon friendship started blooming and took a rapid turn... They both started spending time together.An new turn in Chandragupt's life which going to land him in deep trouble..I must say a very deep trouble... Maybe it s going to cost him Nandini and his child's life.

A beautiful update. A child enhances the love bond between parents as never before. It was really very soothing to see the heartfelt happiness of Chandini on their upcoming parenthood. Avantika, I must say that Nandini disappointed me a bit when she tried to take the life of her unborn child. That too just because she heard a few astrological predictions and a rebellion broke out against Chandra? Is Nandini suffering from some sort of depression or mood swings? Similarly, I didn't think the Mauryan family or Chandra would let go such a thing from Nandini so easily! But that's just my feeling and opinion. You know better what comes in the next chapters. So there could be a reason for all this too. You brought in the mystery angle in the 21st chapter. I am intrigued by this twist. My heart refuses to believe that Chandra is cheating Nandini for this Vrushali girl, and that too when she is pregnant with his child and in such delicate and fragile frame of mind. So some mystery that is!

Chapter 22
Chandra took care of Nandini exceptionally well. Even her slightest whims was never goes unanswered. Whatever sweets she asks at whichever time,He sees to it That he gets her cravings.
Nandini was anemic since beginning of 2nd trimester.Vaidya gave some bitter medicines which she was not ready to take. Chandra himself used to come every morning and evening and make her drink the portion of medicine. He used to bring her flowers and various bangles since she loves wearing them . He will make her wear by his hands. Due to Security reasons, He never takes her out of Palace. To please her Prasad of Krishna temple used to come to her every morning. Chandra used to massage her back as she had acute pain in the back . He applies soothing heat pack as a ritual during night. Nandini's also develops swollen feet as a side effect of growing fetus.Chandra carefully brings her to hot water tub and he helps her by immersingher legs. He reads her favorite books and started giving sermons how to take care of baby. Nandini and Chandra used to enjoy whenever he speaks baby kicks her."See ,Nandini, she is Dad's girl. "He would tease her and She would make faces.Chandra thought all these things are to be done by himself and never ever allowed even dasis to do these mundane chores. Chandra was feeling very happy,satisfied while doing these tasks for Nandini. Nandini's fears related to delivery is also dealt by him in most joking way.Plays from Ramayan and Krishna's childhood adventure were enacted by various drama troops in Palace especially for Nandini's happiness. Courtesans were asked to play soothing ragas in veena during noon . By this time Chaya too gave birth to beautiful baby girl .Chandra sent a lots of gifts to Parvartak Rajya. His dadi went to Chaya's help,since neither Moora nor Durdhara could leave Nandini alone. Chaya was too understood her mother's reason behind not coming to Parvartak Rajya. Moora was very eager in taking care of Nandini. She did not even find Avantika will take good care of Nandini. She used to make Nandini all food she likes to have from her own hands. Diet and other exercise regimes were under her control. Durdhara will take Nandini to walks around the garden in evening . Helena too helps Nandini whenever she could. As a result of Chaya's delivery ,Nandini's Garbsanskar was shifted to 2.5 months further.Now Nandini is 6 .5 months pregnant.
Chandragupt decided to boost her spirits up by holding Janmashtami celebration. Kids of Pataliputra were allowed inside palace dressed up like Krishna and Radha. They were interacting and playing with Chandra and Nandini. Durdhara too mingled very freely with the kids. At the end of the festivities,Kids were gifted with toys and Nandini herself served them food assisted by Durdhara.

I loved the chapter. It was very beautiful to see Chandra taking care of Nandini. But I must say chapters are becoming a bit shorter and shorter. A longer chapter next time, please.

CHAPTER 23
Vrishali

The harvest moon slowly made its way to the center of the sky, dusted with rust, brown and gold tones, it seemed so intimately bound with the land and broke the unwavering darkness that had enveloped the night until then.These were not appreciated amply by Vrishali.She was waiting in verandah of her house. Her anxiety indicates that she was expecting some one to come.Vrishali was a wheatish girl aged not more than 18 years . She was quiet short in stature almost she has to stand on her toes to meet Chandra's eyes. Most mysterious girl of Magadh. None of her neighbors knew about her !She is assisted by an old lady . Vrishali calls her Mantra. This Mantra spends her time running household errands.
Mantra knew about her mistress. She speaks mostly mono syllable words.Vrishali wait was over as soon as she saw a man riding swiftly in horse.He stopped before the gate and within no time he entered inside the simple house of Vrishali
"Welcome Maharaj"Vrishali hugged the man with a smirk.
"Maharaj... I am not a King.. As long as that Chandragupt breathes how on the earth I can be addressed as a king.. Tell me... He bit his teeth and My son is a useless thug. "
Vrishali""I understand your pain... I am your wife though you did not marry me .. Just then Mantra came in with a cup of Milk.Once she vacated the room .He took the cup of milk and pointing towards Old lady
"Is this lady is trustworthy.. I dont believe any one including my son..Traitors"He said in a soft tone.
"She is my grand mother. More than that she hates both Nand and Chandragupt as well as Malyaketu.""Both laughed for sometime. Again he started to speak"Vrishali, how close you are to Chandra?""
Vrishali carefully inspected the surrounding and in husky voice
" I am not at all close ... Chandra is a tough person to handle... He never drinks...and loves his wives and family more. I have made him believe that I am his long dead friend's wife. So he treats me very respectfully. At the same time he does not want me to mingle with his family. Thats what worries me... I could not make whether he is trusting or trapping me. He never crossed his limits. God knows how difficult it was for me to make him believe my identity. Chanakya also present with him. Since Nand is a spent force, IF we manage to Kill Chandragupt. I think Your route to Magadh will be fruitful.
"Vrishali... I trust you..." he said thankfully.
"Nandini... Can i get her too"? as this word came from his lips, Vrishali became angry.
"YOu too ... Maharaj... She is pregnant . Why you guys are lusting after her.I know she is beautiful,but atleast spare her she is carrying someone's child. ""
"She is still gorgeous. Who cares.. Her pregnancy is testimony of her fertility".
Vrishali with all disappointed eyes "Maharaj, wise say only chaste men and chaste women are capable of getting victory. What is the purpose of ruling the world,if you dont know how to keep your senses under your skin.

Helena and Chanakya were eagerly waited for spy to finish relaying the information he gathered about Vrishali.
Chanakya was looking very happy when his spy spilled the information.
"Thank you Veerabahu... I got her motive ... Magadh ,Chandra and Nandini. Since we knew her mission of befriending Chandragupt, I can tackle her easily.Are you sure Veerabahu, that she is his concubine.
"Yes, Acharya. I have befriended Mantra. She is addicted to Kanja and alcohol. These days as you all know Maharaj has banned drugs and liquor. I supply both to her and she became my unsuspecting friend.
"Have you been inside Vrishali house"Chanakya after careful thought threw this question.

She has to defeat me before reaching Chandragupt and I am not that king to fall for lust. I pity her master that he still lusts after Nandini. Chandra was busily reading Ramayana sloka for Nandini.
"Chandra... Please leave me.. BY this time our child could have memorized all slokas. Dont worry he will be a Ram since you are Dasarath.
" I want Sita.. Do you know Ramayana is also called as Sita Charitam by same Valmiki. Do you think Ram could have raised to this heights if Sita was not inclined to sacrifice herself. World can see lots of Ram in coming times but to see One Sita... Its nearly impossible.Though I dont believe in jealousy, I am Jealous Of Janaka. Nandini!! Ramayana is about sacrifice... "No.. If I was Sita, Nand could have been Janak.. All could have been Happy.. You could have been in laps of your parents enjoying all happiness.

Chandra" Dont worry.. We will provide all happiness to all of our children. Tomorrow we will have house filled with laughter of our children. Nandini"Chandra I promise that will definitely happen. Do you know My mother started treating Durdhara with Herbs. My mother knows ayurveds. Definitely she will fall pregnant.Once it happens,I am going to torture Durdhara like how she is doing now..
