Star Plus' show Chandra Nandini is one of the most lavish shows for the channel. It is produced by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms and has Rajat Tokas and Shwetha Basu Prasad in lead roles. It tells the story of Mauryan Emperor, Chandragupta Maurya and princess Nandini. It is an intense love story with a historical backdrop.

Actress Tarannum, who is currently seen as Helena in TV show "Chandra-Nandni", says playing an antagonist can be "really challenging". The track in "Chandra-Nandini" witnessed the grand wedding of Chandra (Rajat Tokas) and Nandni (Shweta Basu Prasad), following which Helena will be seen turning negative since she doesn't like Nandni.
Talking about her character, Tarannum said in a statement: "This role has been pretty interesting for me. At first, I'd have to unlearn the proper Hindi because I had to develop a slight accent since Helena is a Greek princess.

"Over the last two months, my character graph has changed tremendously. Post Chandra and Nandni's marriage, Helena is turning into an out and out negative character which is extremely crucial in the storyline and challenging for me at the same time. Playing an antagonist can be really challenging."
In the show, Tarannum sports a contemporary look. "She is a princess of Greek origin hence my look is different from my other co-stars. It takes me about an hour to get into my entire look," she said.

Mytholologicals and fantasy shows have always been Rajat's forte and with Chandranandini he gets an author backed role to prove his mettle. Incidentally both Shweta Basu and Rajat are child actors who made their career as kids in TV serials . Rajat started his career with Sai Baba on star plus and Shweta started her career with Kahani Ghar Ghar ki on star plus.

This is a something that is not just ahistorical, but also unbelievable and impossible, even ignoring all the historical inaccuracies, like Chandragupta marrying Nanda's daughter after he marries Selucus' daughter

Helena was a Macedonian lady - not even a princess, but daughter of a general handed over to a king who defeated her father as a token of friendship. She'd have had to learn a whole bunch of things - from Vedic practices to the local language, which was nothing like Greek, and then some. The idea that she'd have either the time or influence to boss over co-wives is just unbelievable. For that, she'd have to pick up the language in no time, then learn all the royal rituals and traditions, and then rub it in. Also, Selucus ran an empire that ran from Anatolia to the west bank of the Indus, centered in Antioch. How and why would his wife be anywhere near her daughter, when she'd be busy w/ her husband thousands of miles away from her daughter's sasural?

Beyond that, given that that was a very class conscious society, how would Helena even start? Her status would have been the daughter of a mlechcha (heathen), which would be way below either Durdhara or Nandini (assuming the latter existed). She would probably have been loved by her husband due to her beauty, but beyond that, she'd have had little clout.

I really wish serial writers would desist from transforming classical age historical events into contemporary saas-bahu flicks, defying all contemporaneous conventions.
