You wicked child, that last line about the barber had me in stitches! You have hitherto unsuspected (by me, that is!) depths. 😆

I do not expect too much from all this mishmash, except the chance to watch Rajat go thru his paces in a new avatar - Bharat Mata's all too familiar pronouncements notwithstanding. And I am determined, with kind support from you and the rest, to enjoy myself regardless of the insanities the script will undoubtedly dish out.

No, kid, I did not know that one of the Nands had been a barber, but then I do not expect to have known 90% of what lies ahead either!😉 And I have not seen Bahubali.

But the interesting thing is that unlike even the 1990 Chanakya, this one is beginning with Chandragupta's birth. It is to be seen how many episodes are used up before the grown up Chandragupta makes his grand entry. Seeing that all the PR for this show has been focussed on Rajat, and that the young Chandragupta is not a boy wonder like Faisal Khan or Siddharth Nigam, one can hope that the Jr.phase will be mercifully short.

You know me well, my dear, and your opening para is very perceptive. I am most at home in my own threads, doing my own thing, for as long as there is enough of a response. And seeing how physically demanding this has become, I would be wise to stick to briefer posts than was my wont.

See you again tonight.

Shyamala Aunty

Unsuspected depths 😆😆? This bit had me in stitches 😆
I don't know what you think of me, after that bit and before it... but that's my way of mocking the directors and producers of the show, they say that the characters have been made to look REAL but then in reality, why would a barber require toned muscles? 😆

Your perception from my first para gladdens me but then again, I would always pray for you to be in best of your health and be with us, all the while!!!😃

See you tonight!

🤣 Oh Dear Shyamala, I am going to have to read your threads more carefully. Not having seen the episode I missed those two very clever and amusing comments. The Wardrobe malfunction comment has powerful imagery, had my imagination run riot and had me in splits. The Vatsyayana comment I have to admit I did not understand at first. I could not remember what Utsav was about 😳 and oh shame on me for not remembering the name of the author of such a famous and I may say priceless manuscript/ treatise? 😊

Clever and naughty but in in your own classy way. 👏

Oh, my darling Preeti, thank you so much for turning up on this thread on Day 1! I now realise more than ever how much I have missed you and your cool commentaries. And yes, let us both try and stick it out till the end if we can!

Warmest Vijayadashami wishes to you too, and to the whole family.

Jalal, yes, though I am afraid I have had more than enough of him by now on Lashy's threads for her latest novel. One needs to move on, my dear, and to accept that this Chandragupta will be neither as handsome as Jalal in the classical sense nor as roguish as Jalal could be at times.

But on the plus side, he looks harder and less malleable, Bharat Mata's dire pronouncements notwithstanding ( I was pleased that he was not described as a haivaan, but as one of her dearest sons who had upheld her honour and driven out foreign invaders from her sacred soil) and I am looking forward to seeing Rajat do this turn. Plus he has clearly worked hard to tone his physique as well, and needs to be commended for that.

The de Maupassant parallel was just for that bit, not for what surely lies ahead! He is one of my all time favorites among the French writers, along with Balzac and Georges Simenon.

Preeti, a special 🤗for noting and enjoying the American tourist joke. Not even Sandhya has spotted it! There are two more that even you have left out - the Vatsyayana one, which is as close to being naughty as I am ever likely to get, and the one about the wardrobe malfunction. Do go back and see if you like them!

See you again soon.

Affectionately,

Shyamala

My dear Shailaja,

I am very glad to see you here, and flattered and pleased that you liked this one so much. That makes all the effort worthwhile. But you are right, I have to see how much strain my fingers can take, and then pace myself accordingly.

That lament re: Mura was a feminist reaction that would not be denied! 😉 In our diplomatic treaties, there are always some exceptions built in, but the main provisions are not invalidated by those exceptions. It is the same here.😆

As for your mini-dissertation om marital morality in Mauryan times - how is that for alliteration? - it is spot on, if rather too warm for one of my advanced years. But it reduces what should have been a mischievous commentary of the mores of ladies like that Avantika into a clinical analysis. The froth had all subsided by the time I got to the end of it.😉

As for having babies effortlessly, that is a matter of genes. Many women have no problems in that line. Ethel Kennedy is an example that comes to my mind.

I haven't watched the episode yet. It will air for us in a couple of hours. So that pretty detailed update actually helped. I wouldn't be watching it with unduly high expectations. Aunty you were exhorting us to not be bothered about history while in your own post you expressed your disappointment regarding Mura not being the historical Mura. So may I understand that rules are made to be broken?

Well this Naavik guy means serious business. He could give the present day IVF doctors a serious run for their money. Similarly I appreciate the stamina and absurdity of this Avantika bearing nine or ten odd children without turning even a single hair grey. One pregnancy and delivery are at times enough to ruin your perfect figure and this lady survived through nine or ten? Incredible! Or else Immaculate Conception and Kunti style Instant deliveries existed even in the Mauryan era.

As for this Avantika's illegitimate liaison it does not actually bother me. Because it must have happened down the annals of history. The kings were absentee husbands for most of the married lives of these ladies. Moreover they had huge harems. By the time the number of this queen or wife came, it would take a span of a year or six months. At times they even had the misfortune of having a husband who was twice or thrice their own age.

So what were these ladies in the prime of their youth to do? Sex was a need, a hunger which never got legitimately fulfilled in their lives. So if they took shortcuts to satisfy, I wouldn't blame them as much as I would blame the system which resulted in such perverted means to satisfy a legitimate need. I just wish some extra layers like this are added to this illegitimate relationship of Naavantika(pair name). I would take anything if the story and characters give me a proper justification for it.

Once again it was lovely reading this analysis. Thank you for this wonderful analysis but aunty please do take care of your health as well.

1)it was an eye -closer of an episode...not eye -opener...I was already so tired, n the episode almost put me to sleep 😆

2)first commandment is very easy to follow, at least for me.. 😃...n haven't watched 1990 Chanakya...so I'm safe here as well 😆

3)as for Jalal...I guess some comparisons are bound to happen, esp of initial Jalal (of first 100 episodes) & initial Chandroo, before Nandini''s 5G GPS network takes over... 😆

4)I'm pretty sure of one thing...that dense husband king of Avantika must not have been famous for an efficient spy network...😆😉

5)I found the Peeping Tom scene too crude for my senses...hence, no comments...

6) The sets, though splendid, appeared too "graphical", I thought...

7)n I don't think the viewers' senses could have borne the onslaught of that weirdo's wardrobe malfunction, Shyamala Auntie😆...quite a few viewers would have been lost to Ekta, surely, including yours truly 😃😆

8)I'm pretty sure that the weirdo is Dhananand himself...coz only then the generations table falls into place

9) Excellent writeup, Aunty⭐️...loved reading it...though will not have the luxury before Friday now...will try to log in whenever possible...

10) please take good care of your health...all else should be secondary...there...that's my good Aunty😆...bye for now...😊

Folks,

So here we go again! First of all, a very warm welcome 🤗 to all my old-young friends from the good old days of 2013-2014 in the Jodha Akbar forum. I have been missing so many of you for so long that it feels wonderful to have the prospect of our regrouping after well over 2 years. I do hope that you feel the same too!

I also hope that many new friends will join us as we go down this new road, smooth stretches, bumps and all, and that together, we will have a lot of good, harmless fun. To ensure which, please join me, all of you, in observing just Two Commandments.

One. Thou shalt not complain about the historical accuracy of the script of Chandra Nandini.

This is purely in the interests of our collective health. Once we go down the road of checking and comparing notes with the works of real historians, not to speak of our very own Abhay (history_geek) who will surely make an appearance here even before Chandragupta does, the effects on our BP are bound to be anything but good!😉 Even I, with chronically low BP, would prefer to take protective measures and turn my back on history for the present.

To be avoided even more firmly would be any comparisons with the classic 1990 TV serial Chanakya of Chandraprakash Dwivedi, a dense treatise on the politico-strategic techniques of empire-building which is literally the last word on the origins of the Mauryan empire as depicted onscreen.

Two. Thou shalt not hark back to the days of Jodha Akbar.

To wit, no cracks about Chandraprakat, young Sandhya, and none about Mother India's sage pronouncements, Alakh you imp!😉 Stuff cotton wool in your ears, kids, like Ulysses did with his sailors to block out the song of the Sirens. Abhi se aap aise shuru ho jaaogi, to phir to chal chuki Chandra Nandini!😉

OK, having got all that out of the way, let me explain the title for this post. The episode was an eye-opener in more ways than one. I shall try and list them, and do see if I have missed out on any.

- Chandragupta is now firmly and unquestionably royal by birth. I have no idea where this Peeplivan is supposed to be, but clearly this Chandragupta's dynasty is not named after his mother Mura but, in the most boring and standard manner possible, after his father.

Which is a big let down for feminists like me, who were till now rejoicing in the conviction that the greatest empire that India has ever known was named after a woman. 😭

I also had a distinct hankering for the common man, or boy, becoming an emperor saga, and now that too is gone with the wind, alas!

-After trying hard to take in the absolute riot of colours in the sets, whether of Peeplivan or of Magadha, hamari to aankhein phati ki phati hi reh gayin! If the art director of Chandra Nandini is a bhakt of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it is of the SLB of the 2002 Devdas, not of the 2016 version😉, who created the elegantly muted hues of Bajirao Mastani.

-
The CVs also have a penchant, it would seem, for French farces. Whence a queen of Magadha who has a very open (literally, as anyone seems to be able to walk into her private apartments at night, as Suryagupta does😉) affair with a naavik* named Nand for over a decade (a matter of simple arithmetic, seeing that she has produced nine boys with him and foisted them off on that incredibly dense spouse of hers). It reminded me of Guy de Maupassant's more ribald stories.

And the bit where that Nand was playing at Peeping Tom reminded me of a bit from Girish Karnad's Utsav, with Amjad Khan's Vatsyayana engaged in a similar pursuit, but for strictly academic reasons connected with the compilation of the work for which he is famous. No prizes for guessing which one!

One question, however, how on earth does that menial, which is what he clearly is, catch a glimpse of Queen Mura, who is coming to Pataliputra for the first time, and become besotted with her?
_____________________________________________________________________
* I could not make that word out at all, and would appreciate a clarification. A naavik would be a boatman, but there was no boat to be seen anywhere, so that seems dubious. What a determinedly thuggish looking character he is, reminding one of nothing so much as a butcher!

And in such an attenuated costume as well, which nonetheless does no suffer any wardrobe malfunction, even after all that rolling about on the royal bed. Organisers of contemporary fashion shows could get a tip or two from him.😉😉
___________________________________________________________________

- Since Avantika's boyfriend will now presumably dispose of both Suryagupta and the benighted Shishunaag, take over Magadha and found the Nand dynasty, the famous Nine Nandas are thus all a priori illegitimate. It remains to be seen if Dhananand is one of these Nine Nandas or is the boyfriend himself. I would think the former is more likely.

- Since Avantika makes no mention of a daughter, Nandini is very likely a post-takeover product, and thus firmly legit. Good for her!

- Oh, yes, I almost forgot. We had weather control weapons against the first 4th century BC invaders, it seems. An icy storm is whipped up the moment the first horsemen of the invading army are forced by their leader to set foot in Bharatvarsha.

But this leader chap is no Alexander. In fact he seems to be like modern American tourists, who cannot move a foot in strange places without a tourist guide.😉 So he turns back the minute his patriotic guide refuses to allow the soil of his native land to be soiled by the impious footsteps of a foreign invader. Alas, the likes of Ambhi of Takshashila are waiting in the wings!

OK, folks, this is it for today. Now my usual request. I do not know how many of you will read this, and if you do, will like it. If you do both, please do not forget to hit the Like button. I need to know who my regular readers are going to be.

As demanded by some young friends, I plan to try and do episode analyses as regularly as I can manage, my rheumatoid arthritis permitting, but it will be tougher for me, physically, that it used to be in three years ago. So, I need to have a sufficiently strong base of readers to ginger me up to make the effort. So do remember the Like button, won't you?

Kal phir milte hain. Till then, take care.

Sara my pet,

That tale of yours about the pajama not only had me in stitches, but it is a perfect fit for the situation! 😆In any case, for me to try and make you kids listen to me is like chasing chickens around the yard, you will always get away!😉 But you are all a bunch of very dear chicks, so never mind.

I am glad you liked this one. Let us see how things go from here, but for now I am very pleased that thanks to your initiative of opening that Welcome! thread, you have reassembled so many of the old Jodha Akbar lot. That was very prompt and clever of you, Sara!

My very dear Mitali,

Welcome back to my threads!🤗 You are so fond of me, my dear, that I do not know if you are at all objective about my posts. However, I never question a compliment, but accept it with gratitude, so thanks a ton! I am also delighted that this time around you will not be a silent reader.

Despite being a committed feminist, I too am hoping that Chandragupta and Chanakya will overpower all these mahaan naris! 😉 I was pleased to note, nonetheless, that Chandragupta was described by Bharat Mata in unprecedentedly glowing terms. Small mercies!

A very happy Vijayadashami to you and to the rest of the family as well.

And there, that's my darling Khushi, to have taken the time out of the crushing pre-Deepavali schedule not only to read this post of mine, but to comment on it at such length - ten points, no less! - and to catch that joke as well! Thanks a lot, child! 🤗

The Peeping Tom bit has been lifted (been inspired by?) a snippet involving Vatsyayana from Girish Karnad's classic Utsav, though that was in an entirely different context. Here, I was too dumbfounded by it to even register disgust mentally before the weirdo fell down. Yes, that is exactly what he is, a weirdo. Ugh..

Yes again, I need to be careful and not overdo things. More than the posts themselves, it is the responses to comments that take a lot of effort. I will try my best to be good, and if I don't, why then the RA will take care of that!😉

You take care too. my dear, and do not let yourself be run off your feet. Managing a business, especially a creative one like yours, is no joke, especially at peak rush times.
