Akshay Kumar set to dominate the Box Office for fourth time in a row, with WELCOME.

Welcome to the new main man of Bollywood. Having scored a Box Office hat trick for his earlier three releases of 2007, the inimitable Akshay Kumar is set to triumph the silver screen for the fourth time in a row this year, with the release of WELCOME - a rollercoaster movie journey that pays homage to the classic formula of Bollywood movie 'masala' magic - opening worldwide on 21st December.

WELCOME is 2007's mega Christmas release, which boasts lavish locales, chartbusting music and major star power, headed up by the unparalleled Akshay Kumar, all making for the biggest knockabout comic caper of 2007.

Forget the Khans! 2007 has been the year of the Kumar, as celluloid superstar, Akshay Kumar has topped international box offices with the consecutive successes of NAMASTEY LONDON, HEYY BABYY and BHOOL BHULAIYAA. In a spectacular finale to what has been a victorious year for Bollywood's WELCOME combines all of the classic ingredients of the Bollywood super hit formula, to ensure that it makes for a fitting climax for the end of 2007, and the forthcoming festive season.

100 per cent, pure, unadulterated 'masala' entertainer, WELCOME presents the ever-versatile Akshay Kumar in a completely different light, compared to his recent spate of mirthful film roles. Produced by industry stalwart, Firoz Nadiadwala (PHIR HERA PHERI) and directed by Anees Bazmee (NO ENTRY), Akshay Kumar is supported by an impressive list of fellow industry A-listers, in a role that will see him warm the hearts of cineastes and critics once more.

Akshay Kumar plays handsome and principled bachelor, Rajiv, who falls for the effervescent Sanjana (played by Akshay's lucky lead lady from NAMASTEY LONDON, Katrina Kaif) on a cruise trip, unaware that he is soon to become embroiled with his sweetheart's troupe of sibling serio-comic mobsters.

Commenting about the imminent release of WELCOME, Akshay comments, ?I am extremely excited about the release of WELCOME. I really wanted to get involved in a film project that goes back to the true essence of the Bollywood 'masala' movie and WELCOME is exactly that. There is something in it for everyone; it is high on entertainment and feel good factor and is cinema for the soul. Filming WELCOME was such a pleasurable experience, and that will certainly come across to audiences who see this movie. WELCOME is a befitting climax to 2007 and is the perfect film for the festive season.?

WELCOME releases in the UK and internationally on 20th December 2007.

By Raj Kumar, AllBollywood. com Staff

With the year coming to a close, it's about that time to start looking back at 2007 and seeing which actors and films will place in our annual 'AllBollywood. com Awards'. The main title, that of 'Star Of The Year' has been an easy choice in past years (Hrithik Roshan in 2006 with Aamir Khan as first runner up and Kajol as second, Amitabh Bachchan in 2005 with Rani Mukerjee as first runner up and Abhishek Bachchan as second), this year is a much tougher decision.

When the year began, it seemed like Abhishek Bachchan would be the runaway winner this year. Guru had released and was a big hit, and the film won universal praise (it still is the highest rated big budget film of 2007 with a 72%). That, coupled with the fact that Shahrukh Khan's next release Chak De India was not generating much buzz with it's promos while the soundrack for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was rocking, seemed to have the title in the bank for the Junior B.

But things quickly changed. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom flooped at the box office while Chak De India went on to be a huge hit. Abhishek's extended appearance in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag also failed to impress while Shahrukh's Om Shanti Om (65%) surpassed the collections of Chak De India to be the biggest grosser of 2007!

With his only two releases of 2007 being the two biggest grossers of the year as well, as well as both being well received critically, one would assume that Shahrukh Khan would be the runaway choice for 'Star Of The Year'. However, that is not necessarily the case. Akshay Kumar has quietly become the most reliable star in terms of box office and cemented his position this year.

While Om Shanti Om was expected to be a huge hit from the start and had many things working in its favor, Chak De India's opening was disappointing and picked up only by word of mouth over its opening weekend. The pre-release booking for the film was the worst for a Yash Raj production since Neal N Nikki (35%) in 2005. Not to mention, both Om Shanti Om and Chak De India's were good films as they both featured in our Top Films of 2007.

Meanwhile Akshay Kumar has done what no actor since Amitabh Bachchan has done since the 70's and 80's, and that is make a series of average to above average films and make them hits! Despite not working with the biggest production houses and directors, Akshay keeps churning out hit after hit! As a matter of fact, Akshay Kumar's best reviewed film this year, Heyy Babyy, has the same rating of Shahrukh Khan's worst reviewed in the past 3 years, Don - The Chase Begins Again (also at a 58%).

All of Akshay's films this year have scored in the 50's range (which is Average to Above Average) with Heyy Babyy faring the best with critics at a 58% (Above Average), with Namastey London next at a 56% (also Above Average) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa in third with a 52%. Despite the average reviews from the critics, all three films were hits, with Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa being super hits!

All eyes are now on Akshay's next, Welcome. The film also stars Feroz Khan, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Katrina Kaif, however Akshay is the main draw of the film. The music has been faring poorly at a 44% (for reviews of the soundtrack, click here), however Akshay has shown this year that it shouldn't affect it's opening. If Welcome is a hit, that definitely would make this year's 'Star Of The Year' a very tough decision.

If Welcome is a hit, who do you feel should be 2007's 'Star Of The Year'? You can let your voice be heard by voting in our Opinion Poll on the left side of the screen. Welcome releases on December 21, 2007.

Forget the Khans! 2007 has been the year of the Kumar, as celluloid superstar, Akshay Kumar has topped international box offices with the consecutive successes of Namastey London, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

In a spectacular finale to what has been a victorious year for Bollywood's, Welcome combines all of the classic ingredients of the Bollywood superhit formula, to ensure that it makes for a fitting climax for the end of 2007, and the forthcoming festive season.

No wonder then, his forthcoming venture 'Welcome' is a hot property in film trade circles.

Being touted as the biggest release of this festive month, 'Welcome' features Akshay with an ensemble cast comprising Paresh Rawal, Anil Kapoor, Feroz Khan, Nana Patekar, Mallika Sherawat and Katrina Kaif.

On the eve of release of this Anees Bazmee-directed venture, scheduled to hit the box-office worldwide on December 21, Akshay said, ''Earlier, everyone said I was synonymous with action. I bagged the 'khiladi' tag.

Now, with my last few films being successful comedies, I've become synonymous with comedy!'' The film presents the ever-versatile Akshay Kumar in a completely different light, compared to his recent film roles.

He plays a handsome and principled bachelor, Rajiv, who falls for the effervescent Sanjana (played by Katrina Kaif) on a cruise trip, unaware that he is soon to become embroiled with his sweetheart's troupe of sibling serio-comic mobsters.

Akshay, who is presently shooting for another film 'Singh Is King' in Australia, said he was happy that the three comedies he did this year had the box-office laughing, however, 'Welcome' would be the king of them all, adding, ''It's a laugh-riot from the word go and I hope everyone enjoys it during the festive season as it is my last major comedy of 2007!''

Next year would, however, see Akshay return to the screen in his ''macho man'' avataars with 'Chandni Chowk To China' and 'Tashan'.

However, that does not mean a goodbye to comic roles for Akshay.

''I am not at all bidding adieu to comedy. It comes as naturally to me as action. But, next year I have a variety of films on the anvil, action, comedy as well as intense films,'' he said.

As of now, all his attention is focussed on his forthcoming movie 'Welcome', an Indian Films Release through Studio 18, which has evoked a tremendous buzz in film trade circles.

Commenting about the imminent release of Welcome, Akshay comments, "I am extremely excited about the release of Welcome.

I really wanted to get involved in a film project that goes back to the true essence of the Bollywood 'masala' movie, and Welcome is exactly that.

There is something in it for everyone; it is high on entertainment and feelgood factor and is cinema for the soul. Filming Welcome was such a pleasurable experience, and that will certainly come across to audiences who see this movie.

Welcome is a befitting climax to 2007 and is the perfect film for the festive season."

The movie combines all the classic ingredients of the Bollywood super hit formula, to ensure that it makes for a fitting climax at the end of 2007, and the forthcoming festive season.
