Educated Muslims are the nicest people: SRK

Mumbai: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is all set to break some stereotypes with his role of a patriotic Muslim hockey coach in the film Chak De India which hits theatres this Friday. Here's more from the King Khan himself.

Rajeev Masand: What was your real reason for doing this film? Was it the fact that it was a great opportunity to shed light on a sport or was it a great story to tell, or was it a little of both?

Shah Rukh Khan: Neither of the two. Actually I am not so socially conscious neither do I understand stories. Very simply put is that I wanted to play some hockey after 20 years.

I keep telling my producer and director that I hope after the film is released there are five-six people who say 'oh, I haven't played hockey for a long time man!' Or a father or a mother picks up a hockey stick and tells their children go play the game. So, if people in India start doing that then it is good enough for me.

Rajeev Masand: On one level Chak De India is a patriotic film isn't it? And you play a Muslim coach of the national women's hockey team. Is that symbolic and done to destroy stereotypes?

Shah Rukh Khan: Actually, you can say it in one line that it is a destruction of stereotype – it 's a film about India, headed by a Muslim, playing a game called hockey with a team of women. So, it completely breaks all stereotypes.

I believe in the educated Islamic sect, I belong to it and educated Muslim people are the nicest people in the world. That is my religion and I would like to propagate that through my film without shoving it down your throat. I am not shoving my religion down your throat. I am trying to say that the ideology of an educated Muslim is what my ideology is – that you believe in humanity.

SRK's Robot from September
The Shahrukh Khan and Shankar combo are expected to begin work for Robot from September.
Shahrukh Khan acclaimed as 'Badshah of Box Office in Bollywood' said, "I was approached by Shankar to do the Hindi remake of his blockbuster Mudhalvan a few years ago. Unfortunately I could not work in the project then. Now, after several years we both are coming together for Robot. It is a different story and I liked it very much".

Shahrukh's next Chak De India is releasing this August. It features him in the role of a hockey coach.

Meanwhile Shankar had left to Hyderabad to complete the script for Robot. It is expected to be over by this month-end and the shooting would commence from September. Shahrukh Khan himself will produce the movie.

Chak De India - Review Without Spoilers

So I just got back from one of better movies bollywood and YRF churned out this year. Dont be mistaken. By better i do not mean it wasn't great. It's just that bollywood movies in recent times have really disappointed me. Even the movies that have done well this year seem to be called a hit just because they were less inferior compared to the other or because they made more money. Chak De India, for me stands out from the rest so far this year. It's not the best film ever that you're going to watch. But you're definitely up for a movie with a good dose of emotion, good laughs, and excitement that will give you goosebumps quite a lot of times, especially during the second half.

I entered the cinema during the credits. Missed the title but got in right after it, when the movie starts rolling out with a hockey match. Like all movies, SRK had another great entry sequence. Maybe not the most cheerful one out of all, but one of the best, starting his character development right then and there. Plus it's another entry sequence for him which opens up at a sports field. The story is very easy to understand and there isn't any moment during the film where the audience is left confused. Simply put, sticking to a simple plot, Chak De India is a sports underdog story where Kabir Khan (SRK) is tagged with the humility of a failed hockey player/traitor to India because of something that went wrong during his final match ever played. 7 years later he decides to take charge of coaching a team of the Womens Hockey Association in order to get them ready to win the world cup and earn back his honor.

Without revealing any more about the story, I'll get straight to evaluating the performances and technical values. The movie had a very contemporary feel to it all through. During the first half, where the movie takes place in India, it creates a very gloomy yet truthful feel around the story where the audience is shown how ignored a sport like Hockey in India is, moreover when it's a womens team playing the sport. Most of the first half is spent developing the characters, which is a good thing. Because once the movie hits the hockey fields, it does most of the times if not all the time give you an idea of whats to come from each of the team players. By the end of the first half characters are developed, training is done and the team is all ready and set to leave for the Worldcup which takes place in Australia. The second half of the movie is definitely the better one, no doubt about it. If the first half of the movie felt more like artistic cinema, the second half felt like a hardcore commercial drama. Giving the audiences what they expect to watch (lots of hockey), the movie during this half has many funny and suspenseful moments. Most of this half of the movie takes place on the hockey fields.

I'd like to make special mention of the cinematography. It really worked in favour of the film. The shots framed on the hockey fields were fantastic. Blending fast track shots with fast editing cuts really in a way gets the audience involvement a push. Kind of reminded me of Michael Bay style of directing . So full points to the editing and cinematography. Shimit Amin also deserves good points for directing. I'm glad that he made the film feel and look different compared to other recent YRF films where the story unfolds in the same monotonous way where the first half has cheesy comedy while the second half has forced emotion. Chak De India stayed away from that typical YRF story telling and Shimit Amin deserves credit for that. The songs were just alright for me. I'm glad that most of them were just used as a background piece during certain sequences of the film. Chak De India and Badal Pe Paon Hai are the only full length picturised songs. Infact even Chak De India is cut into several different parts through out the movie. I liked Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan, but it wouldn't have worked if it had a whole 4 minutes picturized to it, so i'm glad it was presented in the way it did. Although there wasn't a lot of comedy, Chak De had it's good share and makes sure to make you laugh whenever it attempts to.

Out of the girls team, the one's that stood out in order for me are Tanya Abrol (the punjabi girl called Balbir), Chitrashi Rawat, Sagarika Ghatke, Shilpa Shukla and Vidya Malvade. These 5 in particular stood out from the rest. But they were also given more screen time compared to the others. Tanya Abrol is a great actress and makes you laugh almost everytime she's on screen. Loved her. Do I really need to comment on Shahrukh's acting I'm starting to run out of praises for him with every movie. He does not disappoint you this time either. He watch Kabir Khan playing the role, not SRK. He looked and suited the role and added his usual extra little SRK touch to it. One scene in particular I'd like to mention where he gets weak in his knees towards the end was beautifully enacted. Anyone can try, but cannot be as great an actor like SRK..and i'm reminded that with every release of his.

There's really a lot more that I can talk about. But this is all I'll leave you with since nobody here has watched the movie yet. I can't say what kind of reviews to expect from the media. Infact i don't even want to take a guess. But the good news is you guys definitely won't be disappointed. I can pretty surely guarantee that. As for those who do not like it, I do not know what they went expecting. You can't help but enter the movie with a skeptical mind, but you as SRK fans will definitely come out more than happy, and the second half of the film lends a great hand to that. So if you're still disappointed during the first half, wait for the second. I managed to stay away from all trailers this time around and i'm glad I did. There are a few things which could've made the film better but i'm a more than satisfied movie goer in this case so I'd rather ignore and not mention those points. I dont want to . For me, Chak De India was awesome and a little more than that...you will enjoy watching it!

9/10

Pros:Good Script, Excellent performance & a good purpose movie

Cons:Few flaws here and there, but ignorable

Let me hold no suspense in the first place. There are 4 reasons to watch the movie Chak De India.

1. If you love good cinema

2. If you love sports or if you have sportsman in your heart

3. If you like Shahrukh Khan (for his non-commercial outing, but with full spirit).

4. For a good script and best of performance by the teenage girls.

After Tara Rum Pum & Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Yash Raj banner required a hit desperately and I believe Chak De India will bring the necessary relief.

If you closely watch, every developing nation has its on progress in the field of sports. I will apply some statistical principles and will come to a conclusion that each nation which progress in sports will progress in other fields too. The modern day India is getting hold of its place in the field of sports, as like its place in the socio economic field. If you consult any national team selection people, coaches or officials, all will accept that there are things to be done in ground, mind, in discussion boards and so on. This will require money, desire, strategy, planning, and execution. We need discipline, talent & training. Only if all these factors come together we can dominate in the global arena.

This year we have already seen Tara Rum Pum, Hattrick & Apne all trying to make Indian team the number one in the international level. However, all these movies had personal shades and it deviated from the subject. However, for a change, Chak De India stick to the topic and I will say it succeed in its attempt to focus the issues facing our sports when it comes to competing in international level.

Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) who was the captain of Indian Hockey team is alleged of conspiring with Pakistani players and he has to leave his house with his mother as everybody from child to elderly treats him as a Gadaar. His dream is however India's success in sports.

After 7 years of this incident, when the Indian woman's hockey team was missing a good coach, Kabir Khan managed to get the post despite his bad name as there was nobody to take the challenge. A lot of problems were in waiting for Kabir Khan. Only 3 months to go for the world cup. The players are come from different parts of the country and there is a language problem. There are few experienced players where few are very new. Ego is a problem, where each one wants to score their own points than playing as a team. Lack of discipline was there. Many carry personal problems as well to the camp. Kabir Khan knows that compromising will not serve any purpose and he decided to make a strong team. The major challenges to him come from Bindya Naik who is the senior player and Kabir Khan changed her position in the field to make best use of her experience which she didn't like. Two excellent wing forwards Preeti Sabarwal & Komal Chautala competes each other to score more and don't pass the ball to one another. Balbir Kaur, the fattest in the group is very hot tempered. Vidya Sharma is just married and has to adjust the personal life to hockey. (Preeti Sabarwal too has a similar story, where her lover is the vice captain of Indian cricket team and he want Preeti to be just his wife.) Soimoi & Rani Dispota is from Jharkhand, they have full problems of language, poverty where they believe they came from jungle. There are more problems. Chak De India is a story of the Coach who made things possible and the players who made it possible by coming up with right solutions in the right times.

If the movie is successful, there are 2 responsible factors. A determined mind which decided to concentrate completely on the sports , and Jaideep Sahni , whose writing were brilliant. It is another feather to the cap of Jaideep where he is the writer of Khosla Ka Khosla & Company. I didn't have much expectation from the director whose name was quite new to me, but the movie impressed me to a great extend. Between the writer and the director, they allowed the characters to fail, the problems to survive and exist till the climax and kept their best for last, an essential to keep the suspense of a movie. The Director Shimit Amin requires praise for his nice execution of the theme and roping Shahrukh khan for the role of the coach. The compromise scene of Komal & Preethi, the scene where the players want Kabir Khan out as a coach etc. are examples of brilliant execution.

All the new girls performed brilliantly and each one delivered their unique performance in style. I am sorry, but I could not remember the names listed. Preeti, Komal, Bindya, Balbir and the captain Vidhya these 5 stole the show from others. Shahrukh Khan simply lived the role without any commercial attachment to the role. He made his mind public on his worries about the film, however, I feel only he could take the risk and attract huge crowds to the theatres and his efforts are rewarded.

Music was not very much part of the movie. The 2 or 3 came up as background music or support the onscreen proceedings. Cinematography was excellent.

Now, few drawbacks of the movie.

1. Training a team to be world champions in 3 months is quite unbelievable. Even the writer knows this and which shows in the preliminary match fail @7-0.

2. Action scenes shot very badly. The cafeteria scenes where woman folk taking of the rowdies, it looks really silly.

3. Bindya is threatening with an association action, but no association is coming up. In real life, associations do intervene.

4. The movie assumes that the selection process was done completely on merit, but in reality half of the problem starts from there.

5. The Hockey is played like a football, where the trick of hockey for which India is famous for is now shown. Some help from master hockey players would have helped to show the tricks, techniques and skill.

Despite the flows, the movie did justice in 3 respects, for that I can ignore all those flaws.

1. It tries to show the hindrances come between the cup and the lip very well.

2. Which suggest good and valuable points, how we can proceed to progress.

3. The movie don't shut its eye on the training other teams get, the facilities they hold, how insecure our youngsters feel when they experience the arrangements in other countries etc.

In short, the movie is worth watching and is recommended for you, unless you are the one who look forward only to dance, skin, colour & romance movies. There is no romance angle in the movie, so is dance. It is a very good movie made on sports and it entertains with the good subject, excellent performance and spirit.

My rating : 4.5 / 5
Plot Revealed In The Review: Somewhat revealed

just came back from watching chak de india, this film has no hype and i was not excited about but was the only movie running in my theater. The movie is really good people the girls in the movie are a treat to watch okay they might not be hot or anything but they do really well. I started to get put of Shahrukh khan but after this movie i think its time he gets a national award because im telling you people ni kidding he did amazing in this movie. You just have to see it to understand he did put alot of work in this movie.

The movie first half is in india, getting the team together and training them up in just 3 months to win the hockey world cup! It shows how hockey a sport is not taken seriously anywhere and india the team is being laughed at. A total underdog movie just like all the rocky movies. If you like coach carter and the classic rocky movies..Basically all the underdog movies then you will love this. The secound half is mostly about hockey and it has its funny moments in the movie. The movie is not that long so don't worry you will not get bored like the first promo i saw in the movie its nothing like a bore fest of the first promo do not worry. Kabhir Khan the chrecter has been researched alot and Shahrukh khan plays it very well after swades this performance is maybe the best or evan better then swades. He should do more cinema like this. I'll tell you one think shahrukh Shaab. Don't worry about audeince or box office power just worry about your performance which you did with swades and this movie. Prob this movie won;t be a hit but you gain more respect then you did with KANK. We know you are one of the greatest actors, don't do KJ and yash chopras bullSHIIT movies do intelligiant cinema like you did with this. I got to say i was getting put off you but you did pull your socks up and you did well but still am not looking forward to om shanti om that looks awful to say!

Overallll a very very good movie, best movie of the year you might say? welllll hmm maybe at par with Guru i would say..But its the best from yash raj atleast for 2 years!

***** (five stars)
