I'd never read a romance novel featuring an autistic character before, and this character really spoke out to me and I was rooting for him to get the HEA he deserved. But unfortunately the FL just didn't connect. I had a whole list of complaints about her but every time I tried to write it down, I ended up even more irritated.. so I just ignored it smiley24 The book is in dual POV and every time I just waited for the FL chapters to be over so that ML chapters could start. I'm aware that her POV was a necessary foil to understand the contrast between the two, but I really didn't feel like going through it at all. This book almost put me in a slump. Thank god for the other authors that I read in May, they managed to get me out 🙏🙏

But even so, like I said in the review, I will end up finishing that book at some point smiley36 bcz I need to see my boy Khai regain his self-worth and find his happy ending 🥺❤️

Are you guys reading The Kiss Quotient series or am I mixing it up? Its just that this sounds really familiar to me.

No you’re right. Bee was talking about Book 2 in the series, I was talking about Book 1, have only read that.

Btw After that night turned out to be just okay. smiley6

Idk if it’s me, but I’m having a bad run with books this month. smiley18

Nah its not just you, this author is too descriptive and graphic with her scenes and focuses more on small details rather than plot. I lose interest quickly if the plot isn't fast enough. Pretty Girls was quite predictable, there was only one twist that really surprised me but even that was revealed midway.smiley36 I read the blurb for After That Night, and it sounds quite similar to Pretty Girls.

I have read all books from The Kiss Quotient, and I think I'm the only one who enjoyed them.smiley36 I liked her writing style and the issues she tackles in each book. I really wanted more books in that series.

Btw, will you be making the buddy read thread for God of Fury? I might not be able to start it before 3rd/4th June.

Yeah I feel the same. It’s not even descriptive - it’s just a whole lot of going round and round in circles. And it’s not even build up. It’s the same info being recirculated over and over by different people.

You’re definitely not the only one that liked TKQ. It’s her most popular book. Haven’t read the others so can’t speak for them.

Sure I can make the thread. Will do in on June 1

Lizzie, I suddenly realised Shonali didn't sign-up for June's reading challenge. I thought she would participate. Some days ago, she said she would both read and listen in June. So, I thought she would complete a lot of books in June. May be she'll be very busy in June that's why she didn't sign-up.

Lizzie, I've questions related to pride prose reviews. You said we need to write reviews and post quotes from queer books. So, should we post quotes from the queer books in the thread of pride prose reviews? Or should we post them in the thread of quotes?

The MMC ends up feeling very one-dimensional and everything feels like a deus ex machina - like you wait until the last chapter and find out he was always down bad and he was the one that did xyz for the FMC and it has always felt like a copout to me because for me, a romance is all about the journey of two people. I wanna see both growing.

Did you know Christina Lauren is actually two people? I get what you mean about their writing though. It's the exact same feeling I had with two of their celebrated books: The Unhoneymooners (the MMC was a dick here again during the 3rd act break up - this is why I don't like 3rd act break ups! smiley18) & Love and Other Words.

I've read well done single PoV romances before so I can't speak against them, bcz when done well they're really very satisfying to me (same with love triangles, I love them when they're done well but so many authors manage to botch it up). Especially when they sneak in that single chapter somewhere with the other PoV just to show us what was really going on. It feels a lot like real life then, bcz unfortunately you always have only single PoV irl smiley39 no luxury of the other PoV unless they openly come out and communicate smiley36 but for these to work, the scenes need to focus a lot on the dialogue and the non-verbal cues. I think that's where most writers fall off. And irdk why that is, bcz when I write romance, my favourite part is the dialogue and non-verbal comm. I squeal and giggle every time I manage to include subtle hints of the growing feelings! 🤭❤️

Anyway, I honestly think fanfics manage to do the single PoV better. They rarely have dual POV anyway, and since they often have a much lesser wc than novels, they know to make the most out of every scene. You can just tell by the scene that the other character is going through it too smiley42

Oh yeah, I just found that out this month while reading the end note of TSE! They're apparently two besties who write together. I had no idea smiley22 I'm gonna start using "them" too, it just slipped my mind since I've been calling them she for so long.

Those are the exact two books I've read before and omg Lizzie, you just made me feel so validated rn. I was really put off by the Unhoneymooners bcz of that 3rd act shit. Even though it's been a long time and I don't really remember the plot anymore, I really felt like the FL was sorta left alone to fend for herself in the end. It was her against the world, and the ML was a part of that world instead of being on her side. I think I didn't even want them to get back together in the end smiley24 but everyone in my group loved that story sm, I really thought I was the only one feeling this way. I left that group after a while, bcz I realised we didn't really have similar preferences. I'm so glad I met you! smiley27 you have a lot of matching thoughts to mine smiley31

Oh read TKQ.smiley36 It's good. I analyze everything too deeply for my own good smiley11

I wasn't talking about TKQ, I do plan to read that 😅 I was talking about The Spanish Love Deception that you said you didn't like 👀

@b: very relatable 🙈

You got it right. I DNFed The Bride Test (book #2) this month, but I do still plan on reading The Kiss Quotient. But Lizzie kinda felt the same thing about book #1 that I felt about #2 so I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it either 😅
