I'm currently buddy-reading eminent Bengali author Satyajit Roy's book, Professor Shonku Samagra, with Muskan. Samagra means complete or entire in Bengali. The book is a collection of 40 science fiction stories. Professor Shonku is an extremely popular fictional character. He's a wise scientist with profound knowledge, and he goes on interesting adventures in his stories. All of Professor Shonku's stories were written in diary format. There are several amazing stories in the book, such as Professor Shonku o Egyptiyo Atonko (Professor Shonku and the Egyptian Terror), Professor Shonku o Golok-rohossyo (Professor Shonku and the Mystery of the Sphere), Corvus (A Latin word which means crow), Professor Shonku o Macaw (Professor Shonku and Macaw), and many others. Many of Satyajit Roy's stories were translated into English. So, non-Bengali people can read his stories as well. Satyajit Roy was a great author. He was a multi-talented person. Apart from being an immensely talented author, he was a magazine editor, illustrator, film director, calligrapher, screenwriter, and lyricist. Satyajit Roy won an Oscar in 1992 for his lifetime contributions to Indian cinema. He is considered to be the pride of Bengali people. A biopic was made on Satyajit Roy in 2022, and it received positive responses from the viewers. I admire him a lot! He's my favourite author.

When I was a kid, I used to read Bengali books only. I studied in a Bengali-medium school. Therefore, I felt gravitated towards Bengali books naturally. I read stories written by Satyajit Roy, Sukumar Roy (Satyajit Roy's father), Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Sunil Gangopadhyay, Narayan Gongopadhyay, and so on. Nowadays, most of the kids study in English-medium schools. A lot of Bengali people look down on Bengali-medium schools now. However, I consider my Bengali-medium background to be my strength. It helped me become strong in my mother tongue, Bengali. I've the ability to write Bengali stories because of that. I wish to become a bilingual author in the future. I'm willing to write books in both English and Bengali.

It is incredibly important to preserve your mother tongue and pass it on! I wish you all the best in writing successful Bengali stories. That way you can reach many people who don't speak English. English can overcome language barriers, but it can never replace the mother tongue.

There are a lot of good books. Every country has its good writers. Be it classics or current books

Bengali literature is rich too. Several talented authors wrote many good books. A lot of them were translated into English. If you ever feel interested in reading translated Bengali books, you can ask me. smiley1

Thank you so much! My children's fantasy book recently got published. The language is English, and the name of the book is A Magical Journey of Learning English. In that book, a fairy helps a 10-year-old boy learn English. I haven't yet published any Bengali book. But I wish to write Bengali books too.

Yes, you're absolutely right! There are many Bengali detective stories. You can read stories of Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi. Both of them are incredibly popular. You can read Kakababu stories as well. Kaka or Kakababu means uncle in Bengali. He's not exactly a detective. He's an adventurer. But the stories are mysterious like detective stories. Feluda is a private investigator. His name is Prodosh Mitra. His nickname is Felu. His cousin calls him Feluda because dada means elder brother in Bengali. Feluda's stories were written by Satyajit Roy, and he's my favourite author. The stories of Feluda, Byomkesh Bakshi, and Kakababu were made into movies. I don't read mythology, so I can't recommend Bengali mythology books.

No, I didn't know his name. I searched on Google and saw he was a detective and an author.

Thank you! Since I set up the challenge and for many it’s their first time doing something like this, I have to answer Qs. smiley9 So you’re welcome!

Oh I will participate in June and am happy to buddy read if you wish to. But maybe not in July. Also won’t have a lot of time in June to organise this challenge. I’ll do my best to set it up, and get things started but won’t be around at the end so won’t be able to do end of the challenge tasks such as tallies, badges etc. That’s why I’m roping Madhu in. And since she hasn’t been involved so far, I thought some of the regular members here can help her out with how page counts are done etc.

You can be back up maybe?

I also feel it’s unfair to saddle the same person with the responsibility every month, others need to step up also.. And it’s not that big of a deal, just that people think it is and don’t want to volunteer. It’s different for me because I’m running the challenge.smiley9

But you can absolutely volunteer again if you want to. And others can too. Just that no one did and we got pulled into it again smiley36

Next time I’m making sure we’re in the same team smiley36
