Almost done with AGGGTM # 3 and gosh, this book was such a disappointment! Sad end to the series.

Anyways, moving on to Sentence is Death, Book # 2 in the Horowitz/ Hawthorne series after this one. I wanna erase this from my memory asap.. smiley36

Yeah, I'm keeping my expectations low because from what I've seen, very few people had good things to say about the third book. And like, I kind of know what might happen because my fyp was filled with AGGGTM content after reading the first book (mind you, I didn't even go looking for edits or anything like that), but I'm pretending to know nothing and hoping for the best. I left off around Ch. 11 because I got distracted by a different series.

Just finished Lisa Jewell's None of this is true and I have to say I can't remember the last time a book had me so riveted. I was reading into the wee hours of the morning (something I usually never do cos sleep is so important yanno smiley14) but this book was un-put-downable.

It's the first one I've read by Jewell and I will be trying more of her books for sure. She has an easy, engaging way of writing and build-up was just delicious. The narrative alternates between the PoVs of the two main characters with excerpts from the podcast interviews interspersed in between. You can tell it's all building up to something huge and all through I had that nauseating feeling of dread that the protagonist is described as having. The end threw me for a loop and if I took away the one star, it's just for that. It left me feeling unfulfilled and with so many unanswered questions. Honestly, after the level of detail in the rest of the book, I expected the end would be as drawn out. But it was quick and choppy and I demand a sequel!

So I'm gonna do what many of my book friends suggest - alternate between genres so onto Hannah Grace's Daydream next. I haven't read the second one in the series: Wildfire but did read Icebreaker and thought it was okay, so let's see how I feel about this one - which is about one of the most beloved characters introduced in Book # 1.

Also read Anthony Horowitz's The Sentence is death, Book # 2 in his Hawthorne series and did not enjoy it a lot. It feels very formulaic after Book # 1. There is usually a past incident involved which ties into the present murder. The author gets into trouble - ALWAYS! And Hawthorne is one of those irritating detective I just cannot seem to like. The narrative seems almost desultory with so much of the author's real life thrown in - like his publishing and TV series writing/ production and people in his life and his experiences, and then bits of the investigation added. It breaks the flow of the book for me. I dunno if I will read more of this series.

THE LITERARY LOOTERS

I need everyone to be proud of me right now because I FINALLY finished The Atlas Six after months of reading it on and off. It took a lot for me to get through this book and that's only because I haven't read such a dense fantasy in a very long time - the book itself is an easy five stars. I loved the book, I'm just so happy to be done reading it. smiley36

I read a couple of books by Swati M.H, an indie writer who writes desi leads.

I began with Pretend for me but couldn’t get into the characters much, I found the FMC very irritating. I don’t usually DNF books but I figured life is too short to read books when you can’t get into them - I’ve especially become more convinced about this after Daydream, Hannah Grace’s latest that I forced myself to finish and boy, it wasn’t worth it! So I’ve decided to give myself the freedom to DNF books from here on given that there are so many excellent reads out there worthy of my time and effort smiley36!

The locked room by Freida McFadden was excellent! I’m waiting to get my holds on her Housemaid series.. i have a long wait for those! So if I get KU before they come through, these will likely be my first reads on it.

Back to Swati’s books: DNFed Pretend for me but finished Adrift and Ablaze and though they were both okay reads with desi FMCs, they did leave me a little wanting both for different reasons. With Adrift I felt like I didn’t really know these leads - it was more tell rather than show. And with Ablaze- I was just plain frustrated at their lack of communication. Though I did enjoy the angst in the latter.

Onto Tattered Stars by Catherine Cowles. This author and this series come highly recommended by my FB group and it’s the first book I’m reading by her so we’ll see how it goes.

Honestly, I'm with you on DNFing books. I get weirdly stubborn about it like, I already started so I have to finish it, and it's led me to finishing some truly unpleasant books.

For me - I’ve gotten more fiercely stubborn about not DNFing ever since I began setting reading goals for the year on Goodreads. I’m like this will be one more book ticked off my end goal. smiley36 But I’ve realized I’m ending up reading more duds than I’d like to with that attitude so I’ve decided to let it go even if it means I fall short of the goal. In the end, quality is what matters (or should matter) rather than quantity.

Same here.. Beginning of this year was a huge reading slump for me.. and I kept on updating them as DNF on goodreads.. my numbers were increasing but I wasn't reading anything.

So while that target setting gets overwhelmingly boring after a point, I have made it a point to still DNF books in case I don't like them..

Life is short, books are wayyyy too many, hence its ok to leave something which isn't clicking with one at that point in time..

Currently reading: IT by Stephen King.. It's a huge book of around 1140 pages.. There have been times I have literally wanted to just keep it aside but then King's writing always gets hold of me.. Hence I have now downloaded it on my kindle too. So now I am alternatively reading it via physical copy and Kindle, but DNFing ain't an option at least for now 😅🫣

Just finished ‘Verity’ by Colleen Hoover. My first CoHo book and idk how I feel about it. This author was said to be problematic and I can see why. Though it kept me engrossed when I was reading it also gave me the ick. The characters were soooo bland though, especially the MMC. I didn’t get why these women were in love with him! 🙄

I gave it 4 stars only because it kept me hooked and I couldn’t put it down but now I wonder - did I really like it? I guess I understand why this author leaves so many readers feeling this way 😃

This is a psychological thriller so I guess I understand why I would feel like this - most Psyc thrillers are like this - leave you with a mix of unease, dread and ick. But idk if I will read her romances. The writing was pretty mediocre and the characters so one-dimensional. If this is how she writes romances, I know it won’t work for me. I need my characters to be well fleshed out in romances.
