It is not mystery per se.Vorkosigan saga defies description. It has been called space opera and that's short changing it. I'll quote the wiki for a better description.
"Bujold's approach varies, sometimes crossing genres. All the novels include humor and comedy, sometimes very black and juxtaposed with tragic deaths or losses. She mixes military adventure, political thriller, romance, and the whodunit in various proportions."
The main character Miles Vorkosigan is the son of a powerful political(and military) figure of a planet called Barrayar.Very reminiscent of Russia (and India to a certain extent). Because of the actions of his father's political enemies Miles suffered serious physical disabilities which disqualify him from joining the military. However he belongs to the Vor class -a sort of military aristocracy.Children of that class have been brought up believing that joining the military is the ultimate. However he hustles and manipulates and ultimately makes a place for himself in the hierarchy.
Start with
The Warrior's Apprentice. The earlier books are about Miles' parents and how they met during a war.
Here are some more quotes
"I know my limits."
"No one knows their limits till they've gone beyond them."
"Never do yourself, what you can con professionals into doing for you."
Miles coaxing Ky Tung to agree to an almost suicidal mission.
"Think of the glory. Think of your reputation. Think how great it'll look on your next resume."
"On my cenotaph, you mean. Nobody will be able to collect enough of my scattered atoms to bury. You going to cover my funeral expenses, son?"
"Splendidly. Banners, dancing girls, and enough beer to float your coffin to Valhalla."
